So, hey. Hi! Good to meet you.  Joining Elysian Fields has me writing fanfic again!

For a long time, I had a single story to tell, 'Life Hard,' so less about me and more about that story. I've been writing this from approximately 2006 until now. Yeah. 2006-2017, on and off, and still editing/rewriting in 2018. Raised children, changed jobs, changed hair color, watched plenty of other television shows. Still, one story, until recently.

All characters will be treated with respect, all laws of Buffyverse (underdressed male vampires, for example) followed, everything that appeared on screen is canon and all canon will be given its due (even the bits I violently disagree with), and all new characters serve deux ex machina or exposition purposes (I'll kill them off as quick as possible). I started writing before the comics and haven't read them, so canon is what was broadcast. Being far, far less strict than Joss, I want all our heroes to be happy, all of them… but, along with Peter S. Beagle, it’s Spike I worry about most, and he has so very far to travel.

Twenty years into BtVS, and it's still tickling imaginations. How cool is that? First episode I ever saw was the season two finale, Becoming Pt. 2. I'd heard good things, so I watched the last forty minutes or so. I figured the redhead in the hospital gown would pop the soul back in and the cute couple would hug, roll credits, because that's how television worked back then. Yeah, I stood there in front of the television with my mouth hanging open for almost a full minute. I was hooked.

Exceed expectations, much? Most of my career has been in academics, where there are journals dedicated to these crazy high school kids, how they talk, how they feel, how they deal. In pop culture, the ripples of this show have spread so very wide. No other show has ever made me want to write story for someone else's characters. It's kind of presumptuous to say this, but I think it's because Buffy aired just before the golden age of television. The writers pushed against the structure of television at that time, but couldn't get too radical. So many stories had to go untold in canon because of the era in which it was filmed. So, we tell those stories ourselves. These flawed, complex characters are... sticky (hey, they were sticky before I got hold of them). It's both exciting and nerve-wracking to share my work, but it's beyond cool to be in the company of other people who will always dwell in the Buffyverse, too.

Summary: A Slayer who doesn’t feel love anymore meets a daywalker who believes he is unlovable.  The story begins in the gloomiest part of season six and gets lighter from there.
From a challenge by Mikkalenko:  Spike is a 'daywalker,' a variety of vampire so rare that the Council doesn't bother to mention them to their Slayers.  Daywalkers get all the perks of vampirism, but none of the drawbacks.  [Full challenge here.]  Very loosely based on the attributes of the comics character Blade.
The gorgeous banner is the work of the gracious and talented nmcil, who is the sweetheart of my rodeo!  Many, many thanks to her for giving this story a face!

Summary: After failing to stop Buffy from turning herself into the police for a murder she didn't commit, Spike picks himself up from the alley floor and heads to Africa to get his soul.  When he steps out of the cave, he's met by a delegation from the Vatican.  They're not there because of his soul (which is perfectly nice and all).  They're there to be a support team for his demon.  Spike finds he is suddenly emitting the most wonderful scent of roses, is preceded everywhere he goes by the sweet chime of bells, and that he occasionally sprouts wings.  None of that matters, though – he needs to get back to Sunnydale, preferably before Tuesday rolls around.
Written for the 12 Years 12 Seasons Challenge, Prompt 11:  It was a truth universally acknowledged that when things on the Hellmouth were about to go kablooey, it more often than not was likely to be a Tuesday.
That rockin' banner is from the wonderful and talented DauntlessGrace.  Woo-hoo!  I was so lucky to get this one!

Summary: Enraged by Buffy's treatment of Spike in mid-season six, the goddess of love swoops in to offer succor to a vampire who has always loved too much and a lesson to a Slayer who scorned that love.
For a challenge by pfeifferpack:  I'd like a story where a goddess of love (pick your pantheon) watches Buffy turn her anger and violence upon Spike over and over and she becomes angered that Buffy doesn't value what is in front of her. Unconditional love is rare and Buffy did more than simply reject that love offered to her by Spike...  The goddess decided to have Buffy learn how rare a gift she is trashing in some way up to the writers imagination. You can have the goddess make herself and her intention known or just have Buffy experience whatever lesson will show her the value of Spike's love.  [Full challenge here.]

Summary: From a challenge by tempestt
When he was a wee laddie, Rupert Giles found himself in a bit o' trouble.  Come on, we all know 10 year-old Giles would've been a little hellion.  Spike, who's around because he's hunting the slayer Giles's grandmother is assigned to is impressed by Giles's swaggering bravado and helps him out.  In doing so he dubs Giles Lil' Ripper.  A much more fitting name than nancy boy Rupert.
So begins an on-and-off, life long friendship between the two...  When Spike shows up in School Hard Giles immediately recognizes Buffy's description so he sets up a meet.  After finding out why Spike is at the Hellmouth, Giles strikes a deal.  He'll help Spike heal Drusilla if Spike agrees to help his slayer for an indeterminate amount of time.  [Full challenge here.]
The breathtaking banner is the artwork of Versheenah, who was so gracious as to give this story a face.  Many, many thanks for your hard work and talent!

Summary: Spike never has behaved the way Buffy expected... not even when he's a feral demon.

At the end of 'Lover's Walk,' instead of sending his goons to fight Spike, Mayor Wilkins sends them to capture him.  When they return with the vampire and a bonus Slayer, Wilkins injects them with some new drugs he got from Professor Walsh over at the university.  With Buffy stripped of her strength and Spike stripped of his human traits, all the Mayor has to do is lock them in a room and let the Slayer of Slayers do what he does best.
Buffy wakes up weak, injured, in chains, and at the complete mercy of her mortal enemy.  Yet instead of torturing and killing her, Spike frees her and tends her wounds.  She can't ask him why, because he's nonverbal.  She has no choice except to believe the unsouled, feral demon cares for her.  The two of them form a bond, depending on each other to escape.  By the time Buffy and Spike get free of the Mayor's clutches, everything between them has changed... as has everything Buffy thought she knew about demons.

Summary: Buffy beats up Angel after learning that he’s lied to her for years.
Angel and Buffy had an Eternal Love.  The Slayer never really examines that great truth, never really has the time.  But after Sunnydale collapsed, taking her staunchest ally with it, Buffy finally has time to think, to deal, to accept.  And when a memory spell brings back a twenty-four hour period that her perfect Angel stole from her, she bravely faces up to the truth about her Eternal Love.  Six months after the Hellmouth closed, a furious Buffy storms into Wolfram and Hart to get back some of her own, never knowing how literal that can be.
Hosannahs to the fabulous Pencilcomet for her wonderful beta work.  Because of her good eye and honest criticism, this story is stronger, deeper, and far more straightforward.  Thank you, my amazing, matriculating friend!  Any errors are on me, from post-beta tinkering.

Summary: Too good for hell, but not welcome in heaven unless he renounces his demon, the Powers That Be don't have a place for Spike after everyone dies at the end of 'Not Fade Away.'  So they create a realm for him and others like him.  Only... it's actually just him alone.
Meanwhile, Buffy quits slaying after she gets word of what happened in Los Angeles and embraces the normal life.  Dawn does just the opposite and starts to explore her dormant Key powers.  She plays it safe, astrally projecting just her spirit into other dimensions while she learns.  As she grows stronger, she guides herself easily to what she wants to see or experience, like a world with beautiful gardens or diamonds raining from alien skies.
One day she sends her spirit out in search of love... and finds Spike alone in his realm, where time moves at a different pace.  The two recapture their friendship, and Dawn sends her spirit to visit his regularly.  She doesn't think her sister really cared about Spike, so she never bothers telling her.  Then Buffy learns what Dawn has been doing -- and who she's been seeing.
