Another year has come and gone…and what a year it was.
There is a lot we could say on the subject of 2020—a lot we HAVE said either on the ShoutBox here or on the Elysian Fields Discussion Group. But for the sake of moving forward, we are choosing to focus on the good. And for our little fic archive, which turned 14, there is a lot of good.
Now the holidays are behind us, so we have retired the holiday skin as the site default. However, we did decide to make it available to users year-round for 2021, so if you like the falling snow, you can keep it.
We held three site events—Challenge Month in April, Trapped Challenge in October, and the first-ever Secret Santa Fic Exchange in December. The response was overwhelming, as the numbers will show.
But before we get to the numbers, we have some awards to issue.
First, we’re rolling out a brand-new award to all authors who COMPLETED stories in 2020. For a show that turned twenty-three last year, we have such a wonderful community of authors who routinely pour their time and creativity into giving us new stories and that seems like something worth celebrating, particularly with a lovely award designed by our own angelic_amy. Just how alive and well is Spuffy fandom? In 2020, 110 EF authors completed 332 fics (!!!!). Authors, seriously, take a freaking bow.
We are so grateful for all of you, and the amount of care and effort you put into your works. You’re the blood that keeps EF’s heart pumping. Thank you for the stories you give us and the time you volunteer to see them through to completion.
We look forward to awarding the FIC COMPLETE award to even more authors in 2021!
We also have the Challenge Complete Award (also designed by angelic_amy), which was awarded to site members who completed any site event challenge in 2020 (that is, the challenge events that are overseen by the EF mods and come with spiffy thematic skins and stuff). So if you participated in a site event challenge this year (or any year) and completed the fic in 2020, you have a shiny new award on your profile.
Next, OffYourBird spearheaded what is now a new EF holiday tradition with the first-ever Secret Santa Fic Exchange. This event was a rousing success, with 51 gifts making their way into the world, and ensuring that Demon Santa has been successfully sent fleeing from our snowy fields of solace... for this year. Thank you all so much for bringing this event to life with such enthusiasm, and special thanks to all the members who worked as and volunteered to be rescue writers to ensure that no one was left giftless. We hope everyone had a joyous and merry time participating. Participants: you will also find shiny new participation awards (designed by OffYourBird) on your profiles if you submitted your story by midnight 12/31.
P.S. If you haven't read the fics yet, you can find them all on their site event page here, which is also accessible by going to Browse >> Site Events >> 2020 Secret Santa.
And more awards? Yes, more awards (designed by OffYourBird). Last year, we announced some brand-new awards to be issued to our most prolific members. Time to issue those again to the 2020 recipients!

Wow, EF, we absolutely made lemon drop martinis or lemonade or lemon squares or lemon meringue pie or whatever sour-made-sweet-treat you can think of out of the lemons we were dealt in 2020 LIKE WHOA, as someone in the Buffyverse might say. I am proud to be part of such a loving, supportive, creative, imaginative, and generous prolific community in all of its many ways - with words, comments, art, challenges, mod attention, support, cheerleading, caring, the works. Love this place and you all VERY MUCH!
I am always more amazed and astonished by this fandom! Thank you mods for this AMAZING website and all the incredibly inspiring challenges/events you plan for us, and thanks everyone else for this lovely community. :)
I'm sorry I wasn't in the frame of mind to partecipate more this year, but know that I'm deeply grateful to you all that did, and mostly to the awesome mods that make all of this possible! This site is a joy.
This place is stupid inspiring, and you mods do an impossibly amazing job (still in awe over how smoothly SSanta went). The bright spot of by 2020 for sure, right here.
Wow! Look at all those NEW MEMBERS! That's just amazing! What a wonderful year we had here in our little fiefdom! Thanks to all the mods who make it all possible!
I mean... am I the only one who nearly cried reading statistics? How freakin' INCREDIBLE are we all?
I have never been more grateful to have found a website in my life! This place has the best mods, the best writers, the best readers, the best commenters, the best artists, the best lurkers people standing about, the best everything of any group I've ever been a part of.
Everyone I've interacted with is genuinely kind and I love how we all support each other.
I say it in my profile, but I'll say it again here - I feel like I'm home.
I'm one of those 1,663! 2020 is the year I found this site and the EF community (and started writing myself), and I could not be more grateful. I am still blown away at how active EF is, all these years later, and these 2020 stats just confirm how amazing everyone here is.
Thank you SO MUCH to the ever-dedicated mods, for making this site and the community engagement what they are. Thank you to all of the authors, who give so generously and write all these deliciously captivating stories for fellow fans to enjoy. And thank you to all members, who play a part and make this community so rich and welcoming.
I may be new, but I'm for sure sticking around.
Coming out of my mostly lurker status to say thank you for this wonderful write-up, Holly. And thank you to all the mods for making this such a welcoming, enduring place <3
Who says our fandom is dead? Pish posh! Alive and kicking... growing and thriving. Thank you all.
