Summary:
Please read through the rules! They really do change a little every year.
For those who are new to the concept: an "exquisite corpse" is an intentionally surreal, collaborative artwork created using a series of prompts. Each person writes their part based on very thin knowledge of what came before. The wiki-history of the form is here. You can read the previous Elysian Fields exquisite corpses here.
This challenge is intended as a time-limited, prompt-driven challenge -- that is, by signing up you commit to waiting for your prompt, to seeing what it sparks, and then to writing for approximately 7 days. The end result tends toward the surreal specifically because the small amount of info passed along from author to author encourages creative discontinuities.
Here's how it will work for authors:
1. If you want to participate, PM me on EF before or on February 1. Let me know if you have special timing needs -- any periods in February, March, or April when you know you will be otherwise occupied. Also please send me an email address to use for communications about the Corpse (it will help me keep EF names/real names/chapters straight).
2. I'll put you on the list.
3. I will randomly draw names from the list to establish the order of writers.
4. I will send a prompt to the first person, who will write Chapter 1 over the following week and return it to me.
5. I send only the last paragraph of chapter one on to the second person, who will then write Chapter 2 over the following week and then send me their completed chapter.
6. Etc.
7. This will publish on consecutive days this spring and summer. Depending on how many authors participate, it may be in one big run of days after the last chapter is in, or a few long weekends at intervals. It also might not begin during challenge month this year.
Here’s how it will work for artists:
If you’d like to participate in a visual Exquisite Corpse, PM me on EF before or on February 1. Up to 9 artists will get an assignment for a portion of a banner. When the left-most portion of the banner is complete, a sliver of it will be sent to the next artist to continue from, etc. You can see how they turned out the last couple of years - they’ve been fantastic!
The Rules:
1. Your chapter must start with the paragraph you were given, just as you were given it. One exception to this rule is the tense; some people prefer writing in the present tense, and some people the third, and it's fine with me if the story shifts in that way.
2. Only your final paragraph will be forwarded to the next author. A natural last paragraph is much preferred, and I reserve the right to trim off overly-detailed exposition. (“Crap!” said Buffy, for instance, is an acceptable final paragraph; as is “Crap,” said Buffy, glaring at the now teacup-sized Angel. But please don’t force out something like “Crap,” said Buffy, glaring out the now teacup-sized Angel who had been shrunk by a boomeranging shrinkage spell of his own devising that had been intended for Spike on the occasion of this their wedding night.)
3. No cross-overs outside the Buffyverse (ATS and the comics are fine!)
4. We are a small community -- please do what you can not to share info about chapters before publication. You are of course free to have your chapter beta’d, but preferably not by a fellow Corpser.
5. NC-17, though you do not have to rise to that rating.
6. The Bewildered Rule: While I generally recommend a 1,000 to 5,000 word chapter, there is a maximum word count of 14,700.
7. A passable chapter needs to be sent to me by your deadline, since other people will also be waiting for their prompts. But by passable, I mean it can have gaps in it you intend to fill in. You cannot just promise that it will be written and send me only the last paragraph.
8. And since authors always ask: You are very, very welcome to use your EC chapter as part of a future work! Or as a stand-alone one shot. Or to put it on other archives, though I’d appreciate a link back to the Corpse. They are your words. The Exquisite Universe on Elysian Fields is an open universe, so you can link related stories to it as you wish.
