When Buffy goes on her vision quest the first slayer shows Buffy past slayers have bonded with Master vampires. Vison quest goes on to show her why Spike is worthy. vision shows Spike is being tortured in the present and does not reveal the key. Buffy rushes back to Sunnydale to rescue Spike from Glory.
Buffy returns from the vison quest changed. What the changes are is up to the author.
