I personally would not give permission for anyone to finish my work, nor would I be interested in picking up another writer's story to finish it. Totally cool with others doing it, ofc, it's just not something I'd be interested in.

When they get to the last chapter or two, they can add it on and see if anyone wants to take it over.

SoaringClaws, I think your idea, is so much better than mine. Those who want their fics adopted for whatever reason they can post a category tag on it.

Unless enough people show an interest in fic adopting, I don't think there should be a section on EF. If there is a minority of people who want to do it, they can maybe include it at the beginning of their story summary or in an A/N at the beginning of a chapter?

That being said, I don't think I would use the adoption feature as either the author finishing or wanting my fic finished.

On the subject of the adopt-a-fic thing: maybe just a category tag instead of a whole section? So an author could tag their story as adoptable and then interested author's could just do a category search? Coding isn't my field, so I don't know the difficulty difference.

BTW my story has been subject to a lot of editing, so it's actually better now than when I first posted it. At least I think so. ;)

Kind of reborn here. I've changed my username. :) I've written just one story, if you recognize it you know who I was before.

author as a co-author and they could then finish the story. Beyond that, I don't really see a site sponsored section where authors put up their stories with notes like 'free to good home' :) .

Susan
don't think there is. That said, we have no problem with an author noting in their story notes or summary that they are no longer interested in finishing, and they would like authors interested in finishing their stories to contact them. If given the ok by the original author, we could add the new

It's definitely settled that we'll never put stories up for adoption without the author's permission. The question now is, is there enough interest from authors who want to give away their stories or finish up another author's work for us to consider making a section on EF for that? Personally, I

I agree with fic adoptions but only if the original writer has given consent for it to be finished by someone else. I agree totally with Megan when she say stealing the fics and finishing them without permission is unacceptable. I cant think of anything worse when to be honest.

As co-owner of this archive, I would want to see a reasonable level of interest from writers prepared to hand over the reins as well as writers interested in taking them on before I think it would be worth hosting.

As a writer I am deeply against the idea of anyone taking my fics and finishing them without my permission, which is something I would not give. I don't agree to this even fir the two authors I know have passed away, one being a good friend.

I've heard and seen authors putting their stories up for adoption before. A friend of mine did so due to losing her muse. The ideas she had were really popular and she wanted to see them continued, so she allowed other people to tackle the stories with her permission. I'd say it's a fair idea.

I still think it's a good idea for writer's who want to voluntarily put up their own works up for adoption, is a good one.

Thinking about it. The orphan fics should be left alone. Sometimes when you look back on something, you realize it's really not a good idea after all.

I'm against the idea.

I understand. I had forgotten about the coding factor.

That's why I'd like to hear from authors first, to see if they are out there and willing to let their stories go. Also, are there authors who want to take on old WIPs? I'm this way with any new features, I usually ask the chat crew copious amounts of questions before coding to make sure I'm not wasting my time.

The issue with just doing a test run is that for that to happen, I still need to code it, which takes a lot of time and effort on my part. I don't mind doing the work for features that I think will be used, but I don't really want to spend the time if no authors are actually willing to participate.

I have seen other Adopt-A-Fic boards on other genres websites, where the writers put their fiction up for adoption, for various reasons from their muse, leaving them, to their life is so hectic they can't focus on it, anymore or they simply lost interest in their own story.
June 24, 2014 06:49pm

valerie21601
You could do a test run on it and see how it works out. If it's a bust simply take it down. I have come across fics where the writer is still active readers on EF but haven't finished their stories in years and on the Spuffy Realm, too.

Is this something authors would really do? I can't imagine putting so much work into a story only to say, "I'm done. Someone else finish this." I'd like to hear from some EF authors to know their thoughts on this. Also, the authors of most older WIPs are MIA so they're not around to give permission.
June 24, 2014 06:42pm

valerie21601
Yes, Only the original writer's can place their fics up for adoption and decide the conditions of the adoption. And when it's passed on to the new 'parent' the original writer, would post who is the legit adopter is.
June 24, 2014 06:41pm

lambean
I would imagine it as only having stories available to adopt that we're voluntarily made available by the author themselves
June 24, 2014 06:34pm

valerie21601
I am sure there are writer's out there, who would be willing to put their own stories up for adoption, on their own.
June 24, 2014 06:26pm

valerie21601
No problem. I understand your position on it.
June 24, 2014 06:23pm

Susan
I think I speak for all the mods here when I say there's no way I feel comfortable putting an author's fic up for adoption no matter how long it's been since they updated. Even though we host it, the fic is their property, and theirs to decide what should be done with it.
