Rewrite of Hell’s Bells:

Before the wedding, Buffy and Spike have their chat somewhere a little more secluded. Buffy kisses Spike, and his date sees and bails unnoticed. Buffy pulls away and apologizes, telling Spike she shouldn’t have kissed him and it doesn’t mean that anything has changed. Frustrated, Spike storms out. While trying to find his date, he instead finds Xander and saves the wedding.

Weeks later, Xander confides in Buffy that Spike saved him from a huge mistake and tells her what happened at the wedding. She reflects on this info and everything else that has happened and realizes she gave up something good. But by the time she realizes it, Spike is seeing someone new. Buffy doesn’t want to ruin Spike’s happiness, so she keeps her distance, but the more she sees him with someone who is good to him, the harder it becomes to realize that she only pushed him away because she was scared that she had been falling in love with him.
