When Dru brings Spike a fluffy little dog to eat, he refuses because he hasn't sunk that low. But then the dog gets attached to Spike. Soon, he's getting it food and water on the sly. We'll ignore the plothole of Angelus not killing the pup. Anyway, Spike keeps the dog.
Set this fic in Season 4, with Spike not only desperate for blood after escaping the Initiative, he's terrified for his dog.
Also? A guy with a cute little dog who adores him is even more appealing.

This is the story of a boy (a 100-plus-year-old vampire) and his dog (a 15-pound Shih Tzu named Miss Sunshine).
And also a Slayer. Who may or may not be the sunshine destined to burn him to ashes. Or is it the dog? Or the actual sunshine? Spike’s pretty confused about that part, actually.
Oh well, at least he still has his faithful— albeit tiny—companion.
