Summary: As Buffy described it, Willow used the essence of the scythe to change the destiny of the slayer line and empower a new force for good. However, as Drusilla the Mad described it, “Presumptuous children whose osier-thin, corkscrew fingers meddle with the firmament might discover fangs and claws prickling behind the pretty, angry stars.” Translation: probably not every potential in the world should’ve been activated as a slayer.

Written for the 2021 Elysian Fields ‘Called Challenge'. The banner was made by mcgnagallsarmy, who gifted me with my very first and totally awesome story banner!

Story Notes: This story begins during Angel the Series (AtS) S5 episode 10, Soul Purpose, and then goes rogue from there.

For those not familiar with AtS, Spike returned to Wolfram & Hart as a ghost-like being 19 days after closing the Sunnydale Hellmouth. Some months later, and just prior to Episode 10, he finally was un-ghosted by a magic whoosit delivered to Wolfram & Hart (evil law firm where Angel is now CEO). Corporeal and with his soul, Spike was tricked (along with Angel) into a “mano-a-mano” battle to determine which of them is the prophesied vampire champion with a soul. Spike won, but the contest was a diversion and the “elixir of life” at the end is actually Mountain Dew.
Anyhow, all body-having, Spike was finally able to leave Wolfram & Hart and even L.A. Despite that, he decided that ‘tis nobler to stay in L.A. and let Buffy remember him through his sacrifice than to reunite with her. (One thinks he should’ve been suspicious that Harmony and Angel were the ones reinforcing that decision, but so it goes.)

And so it begins….

As mentioned, the story banner was made by mcgnagallsarmy and has already given me great inspiration. It's currently unbetaed because I haven’t managed to get there yet. Various scenes and snippets of dialogue are borrowed from AtS and also BtVS episodes with the following disclaimer.

1. Chapter 1: The Stars Have Turned Inside Out by JayeMaru - Likes: 17 Comments: 14 Word Count: 6,416 Hit Count: 835 Published: October 14, 2021

This chapter begins "off camera" during the events of Angel the Series (AtS) S5 episode 10, Soul Purpose. Spike has recently become corporeal again and has just started living in the bare-bones, basement apartment given to him by a fellow who claims his name is Doyle. The notion, per Doyle (who also claims to be a representative from the PTB) is that Spike should pick up Angel's former mantle as the city's champion to help the helpless since Angel is busy playing CEO at Wolfram & Hart. Spike may not have needed much convincing to get his nightly demon-brawl agenda started up, but he is suspicious of that Doyle character.

2. Chapter 2: You’ve Misplaced Your Sunshine by JayeMaru - Likes: 12 Comments: 9 Word Count: 5,952 Hit Count: 594 Published: October 21, 2021

Drusilla’s surprise appearance gives Spike a new perspective and a focus to give him purpose. It doesn’t, though, stop events already going on in Angel’s L.A. As a result, this chapter weaves around some scenes and dialogue from Angel the Series (AtS) S5 episode 10, Soul Purpose, while happily omitting and rearranging AtS canon.

3. Chapter 3: We Hunt Under the Stars by JayeMaru - Likes: 15 Comments: 10 Word Count: 4,570 Hit Count: 582 Published: November 10, 2021

Spike helps Drusilla navigate her new and confusing life, one shopping experience at a time. Drusilla makes some friends.

4. Chapter 4: Under a Mere Sliver of Moon by JayeMaru - Likes: 11 Comments: 8 Word Count: 2,549 Hit Count: 546 Published: November 28, 2021

While Dru is occupied, action returns briefly to Angel’s domain. Scenes are borrowed from Angel the Series S5 episode 10, Soul Purpose, with more revisions as Spike deals with the machinations of Doyle, Angel, and W&H.
