The Spuffy has happened very, very early in canon. S2 early. Except no one knows the Slayer and new Big Bad in town are getting it on. (Spike and Buffy can have met however you like, with canon's School Hard or earlier, and likely Dru is not around, for one reason or another.) So when Spike is causing mischief on the hellmouth and Buffy says: 

Boy does she not mean it the way everyone thinks... devil
