This is the first story that has moved me to submit a review. It is so bittersweet and affecting. I love this Buffy and this Spike, and I look forward to seeing what develops from their sincere mutual caring and mutual attraction. It is so heartfelt and not sappy. Kudos

I am so glad for this chapter, it's been hard to wait so long!
The interaction between Buffy and Faith was sisterly.

These frequent updates are so appreciated, your story is one of my all-time favorites. Good for Buffy for finally getting it out; whatever she thinks Spike does or doesn't feel, he deserves to know the truth from her. Orkanel? I had my suspicions. Waiting with bated breath for the next chapter.

Thanks for a wonderful story. I loved your characterizations, all of them. Your Spike and Buffy were so well done, beautifully and believably progressing to your conclusion. I am looking forward to S9.
Can I say that I also like your story for being PG-13? My eyes glaze over reading the boilerplate NC-17 scenes that appear in so many fics. You told a great story, and let Buffy and Spike have their privacy!
I must confess that for whatever reason, I did not stay with "The Rose." I'll give the rewrite a look, based on your masterful "Embers."

It is so great that you updated! Thanks so much.
I have enjoyed every chapter of your story, it is so original, yet completely true to the characters. I can enjoy some AU stories, or all-human, but real Buffyverse stories are the best.
Dr. Berger's story may have been to save her butt, but if sincere is an intriguing direction to go here. Will Buffy want to pursue it? Now that Spike has drunk Buffy's blood, has he been permanently altered? I can't wait to read what happens.
And there is still so much other story her -- Willow, Angel, ...
Great to have the story back. Although the update was worth waiting for, I don't want to wait again!
Author's Response: Thanks beauty. It\'s so wonderful to be in this universe again and it really is that: a universe. There are so many characters I love now: Gina, Pipa, the Caretaker, Sonny, old Xander and Dawn, Max, Spike the Labradoodle. :-) I\'ll be better with Chapter 30 than 29, I promise, and will not make you wait eight months! Thanks for still reading. I

So so happy to see this update! I love the way Buffy shuts Angel down so determinedly. Can Angel really think theyhave a future? And how perfect for Spike to be a witness to that exchange.
I love this Buffy. Experience has made her a complex person, not a caricature. It seems that whatever does develop between her and Spike will be REAL and human and I can't wait.
Author's Response: I love that you love this Buffy. Thank you!
I am so glad that Spike's suspicions about Buffy giving Angel blood were resolved quickly; it was heartbreaking in the previous chapter when he jumped to that conclusion, and the potential confrontation with Buffy would have been painful and damaging (potentially fatal) to their tenuous relationship. I was fearful, because I didn't think Buffy was involved, so I was as relieved as Spike when he discovered it was Sonny.
Spike has a real friend in Clem. It's hilarious how Clm tries to rein him in.
Creepy cliffhanger on the watcher connection. Nice parallel responses by Buffy and Spike to their discoveries (and their implications) at the end. Always love to see an update, can't wait fo more.
Author's Response: It\'s funny. It would have been so typical for Spike to confront Buffy, and I was despairing when readers expected that I was headed to such familiar territory. I was tempted to tell you guys not to worry! Glad you appreciated that little parallel at the end. ;-) Thanks so much for reviewing!

As always, I was so happy to see a new chapter!
I was bracing for more badness on Buffy's end before she got clear, but with a twist, you had Spike run into a little trouble. I was happily surprised to see them get back to each other so quickly. Your story is original, therefore unpredictable, and I love it.
And look at Buffy declaring her feelings unambiguously! Spike IS the only one there for her (nothing against Dawn, who has her own life). I look forward to what these two will do, truly together, to solve the Watcher mystery.
Author's Response: Beauty, I love that you go along for the ride, and continue to be surprised by the plot. Thanks so much for reviewing!

I love it when you update! I am not speculating about the baddies, whatever you have in mind will be better. I did have an uneasy feeling about our heroes being in the wide open like that.
I love that Buffy accepted Spike's offer for her to stay with him. But it's sweeter that they are being a couple in ways other than shagging, especially since they both obviously want to!
Looking forward to "more".
Author's Response: Thanks beauty! I\'m glad you\'re still reading despite lengthy periods between past updates. I hope to be updating more regularly again now. Yeah, I\'m as eager as the next horn dog to get these two in the sack, but I actually love them most when they\'re teasing each other and acting like the kids that they never go to be.

How do you make the forced medical procedures scarier and more evil than bad old demon mayhem? I guess because the "ethical" humans perpetrate it, emotionless and so, so cold, yet secure in their rightness. Poor Buffy, laid out on a table for a fate worse than, yet paradoxically including, her death.
I say Buffy has no obligation to "help humanity" through this supposed research. She may be immortal, but she suffers plenty. And there is huge potential for abuse of the immortality feature, why trust anyone with it? The regeneration aspect of slayer physiology should have been accessible through the other, willing, slayer subjects.
I can't help feeling Willow's hands are not clean.
Interesting plate number.
Author's Response: You make good points. Modern medicine is the product of human rights abuses, but few of us would want to do without those advances now. The secret of Buffy\'s immortality could be misused, undoubtedly, but the potential for misuse has never stopped the progress of science. Perhaps the world asks too much of Buffy. [It always has.] And perhaps it is her right to refuse to submit her own body to science. But if a cure for human suffering could be found within her, then the results of her slaying may never stack up against the results of experiments made upon her. She submits herself to death in the field all the time, and how many demons have had a piece of her? What\'s a few pieces for science? Just playing devil\'s advocate here. And what if Buffy\'s own niece or nephew were suffering from an illness that he body might hold the secret to cure? Would she feel differently then? Exhibit A: she let herself be drained and would have slaughtered Faith to save the life of a vampire that had murdered thousands. Does the world ask too much of her, or does she give herself only to those who matter most to her? Interesting questions! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. :-)

Oh Ms. Jane!! You have no idea how often I long for an update, and how grateful Iam for this. I recently went back and re-read the last couple of chapters to keep in touch with the story, so when the new chapter was posted, i could jump right in.
I love that Dr. Berger, in her arrogance, so underestimated Buffy. Of course, we don't want Buffy lying on the table as a victim, waiting impotently to be rescued. I can't wait for the Spike-and Slayer-team rescue to dovetail with her own escape effort now underway. Thank you for keeping Buffy strong, and for getting Spike some blood.
You have crafted such a complex story here, and nothing seems forced. There is so much still to unfold, potentially - Angel's tongue and blood thing, Willow's role, Buffy's house, sibling reconciliation, and the immortal Spuffy love.
I will keep anticipating the next chapter.
Author's Response: Beauty, I told wolffan that I was in this gig for one reason only: to entertain my fellow Buffy fans. But that isn\'t the whole truth, because I won\'t do that by any means necessary. The moment I depart from the very heart of what Joss was trying to do is the moment this story fails. My point? Yes! We do NOT want Buffy lying on the table as a victim waiting impatiently to be rescued. Only in her dream at her most vulnerable moment did she revert to imagining Spike was rescuing her from that \"demon\'s claw\". When Buffy woke up, she wised up, and took matters in to her own hands. Joss gave us strong women, and inspiring men, and courageous people fighting against impossible odds. He gave us a different vision of the world and of ourselves. I\'ll do my best to continue that tradition. Thanks so much for reviewing. :-) :-) :-)

Embers was so wonderful, you can write any season 9 you want!
This was a pleasure, and entirely plausible in light of the comics so far.
Spike’s been tossed around by the Slayer too many times to count, but this time she’s gone too far. Her ritual of self-congratulatory humiliation has made him a laughing stock, and it’s the final straw. They’ve never been friends, but she’s forgotten that they are enemies.
No more of it.
But then the Slayer is shot, and the culprit is a freckle-faced eleven year old boy with a vendetta and wide, wet eyes. He’s an unlikely villain and the Scoobies can’t face interrogating him so Spike is tempted in to play Bad Cop while the Slayer lies unconscious in a hospital bed.

Whether or not it was Giles's idea, Buffy is not off the hook on this one; even if the deception was necessary to save the world, treating Spike badly afterward was not. Hooray for Spike feeling used, and being angry about it.
Canon Giles was never able to interact with Spike in a satisfying way. In season 4, after Spike helped Fyarl-Giles (and weren't those 2 fun together?), and Giles approached Spike about redeeming himself, it was just too soon. Too bad he never went there again, after Spike's many actions belied his "evilness." I always felt Giles's harsh judgment of Spike was unwarranted as time went on (although I can't fault him for being uneasy in Season 7).
So it's nice to have a humane interaction between these two, and I love when Spike the monster shows compassion.
And what's up with this kid? Love the story, and I look forward to more.
Author's Response: Thank you beauty for a really nice review. I agree, Spike and Giles were a lot of fun in season 4 and I kind of missed it later on in the series. I think there's a lot of potential for friendship or at least understanding between these two.

I wonder what Buffy's conversation with Spike will be like in the upcoming issue. Your takes on this terrible turn of events are plausible, and painful, and it's hard to see a happy resolution to this pregnancy. Poor Spike, seeing the woman he loves in this situation. How they both hurt!
I can see "Slayer Interrupted" hit you hard. After explicit evidence of Spike's continued (selfless) devotion in the previous issue, it was a real kick in the teeth to anyone trying to hang on to hope for Spuffy. But it's only a quarter of the way through Season 9, and so much more awaits. Who knows what Joss has in mind, but I think the comic may incorporate something from some of your scenarios. Perhaps Spike will reconsider what "normal" means for Buffy, or whether she deserves something better than normal; her current situation is, sadly, not unique.
Author's Response: Oh, I\'m fairly certain that we\'ll be getting Spuffy and I *loved* Slayer, Interrupted and the idea of a Buffy pregnancy! Joss has never done a natural pregnancy and I look forward to seeing how he addresses it and how this\'ll influence Buffy\'s decisions throughout the season (and we already have some hints of it in future covers). Regardless of how Spike and Buffy continue to interact throughout the season, I\'m rather satisfied with what we\'ve gotten so far and I\'m unworried about what happens next. :) This was a story that I felt was a necessary one, though, especially considering that it\'s doubtful that the comics will take this route. And Spike maneuvered his way in, somehow, and took center stage in a story that was never meant to be shippy. ;)

After the first chapter, I was thinking how interesting it would be for Buffy and Giles to be dealing with two vampires-with-souls, and their relationship. I am sorry to see Drusilla go this way, although I suppose she would have had to make some kind of exit eventually to make room for Spuffy. Now they've both lost their lovers in disturbing ways. I'll be reading to se where this goes.
Author's Response: I was a bit sad myself to let Drusilla go, but I just have a hard time sustaining writing for that character. And also her absence does open the door for Spike and Buffy to get closer; now that they both are dealing with the same tragedy of losing their loves and know what the other is going through. Anyway, Thank you for reviewing!

I am sorry for Buffy that she thinks it is wrong to expect sex to be a "big meaningful thing" or "special". Of course, that is a high standard and one could be often disappointed, but she should not accept that sex is just something to do for fun or no big deal, if that doesn't sit right with her. She is entitled to want something different for herself. In canon, she thought she was getting that better experience with Riley. It can be meaningful without being perfect, or all you want it to be. And it can be a hard thing to learn what it is you want and need.
And then on the other hand, there is Anya. Of course, she is not as young as her human self, and has already figured out what she wants out of it.
Unfair to enforce the swearing ban when Spike has a tracer in him. It is so sweet how he has all these relationships.
Yeah, Spike, pretty dumb. But what was Buffy up to, anyway. Not fair.
Spike’s hands were cut off, but that’s just the beginning of his trouble. Will he be strong enough to survive? And will Buffy be able to help him?
****WARNING****
This story is graphic. Extremely graphic. One of my beta readers (no_promises) cautions that this story should not be read while eating. It doesn’t simply allude to torture and sexual abuse, it describes it in gory Technicolor detail, so if stuff like that squicks you, please don’t read.
For all of you that are still with me, I hope you enjoy it. Happy reading!

You had a great twist here. I was afraid Spike was going to accidentally enter Giles's flat, and it would occur to him at some point that Giles was dead. But Spike didn't, prolonging the suspense, and Giles isn't, which is good.
Still worrying about Spike encountering Faith before Buffy's status is known.

I am really enjoying your story. This is heartbreaking. The "we don't kill humans" rule is the right principle, but as Andrew pointed out in Season 7, all Buffy's people are killers. Very often, it seems the struggles in Sunnydale are akin to war, and criminal justice remedies don't fit. A judge and jury wouldn't execute Warren for kidnapping, but his actual offense was beyond that.
The torture is problematic. Did that elicit the information about the M'Fashnik? Dawn's safety is not a concern only for those close to her. This is a tough one.
Very often, it seems the struggles in Sunnydale are akin to war, and criminal justice remedies don't fit.
This is a very good analogy. But then again, eventually even the soldiers have to face the music for their actions in combat.
The torture is problematic. Did that elicit the information about the M'Fashnik?
Yes.
Thanks for your comment :)

I have been noticing this story with interest since you first posted, but I had not had a chance to read (all 12 chapters) until today. It is very sweet, I suppose reflecting the maturity that Xander and Buffy would have earned over the passing of eight years and the rhythm of life in Delbrick for Anya and Spike. Another reviewer mentioned how long Anya and Spike appear to have been in Delbrick, but I suppose the PTB can alter everyone's reality to suit.
Will our couples fall in love in their new incarnations? Or must the past be revealed? That's the conflict I see looming. I look forward to your next update.
You're quite right about Delbrock. There will be some twists up ahead
