Came to Buffy in a round-about way and almost 20 years after the show began: the way I do most things. Just discovered Crowded House, for example. I live under a rock.

How I found Buffy: Liked Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries TV series, and from the TV show I progressed to the books by Kerry Greenwood, then discovered her other detective, Corinna Chapman, who is a baker & amateur sleuth in Melbourne (Australia). The Corinna characters are sly re-imaginings of Buffy characters, all human. Corinna is a fan of BtVS. So, I was curious, got the DVDs from my library, and have been an obsessed fan ever since. Spike/Buffy is my favorite OTP of all time. I love their stories in this fandom, whether they're Slayer/Vampire or all human.

I've never written anything but performance reviews, but I'm an avid reader and a good editor, so happy to beta if asked. There are some excellent writers in this fandom. I'm so impressed by the talent on display here. Some day I may try to write something, but I don't really know how. I do have a few story ideas...we'll see.

Nice set up for this story, and I see you've already cast Angel in the deceiving, manipulative role. Maybe this is part of your AU, but Wesley's memory is not serving him if he's forgotten that Faith tortured him brutally.

Thanks, I'm glad you are enjoying the setup for the fic. And yes, Angel is definitely being manipulative in this.

Thanks for reading and reviewing!

“I don’t pay you to think,”...

I had a boss who said those very words to me once. That was the day I started looking for another job. Later, this boss was fired for telling us not to record our findings in our notebooks. The boss from hell. A real-life model for Angel? It might be fiction, but this stuff really happens... just without the demonic part.

Nice how you're building the tension of their near-misses, and I can't wait for the explosion when they finally find each other & realize who has been pulling the strings to keep them ignorant of each other's presence.

Author's Response on April 13, 2019 08:12am

Oh that's terrible. I'm so sorry someone treated you this way. Sucky bosses are the worst.

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing.

And then Buffy and Spike threw Angel through the necro tinted glass window. The End. I hope his training room is on a high floor. LOL.

A sweet session between the two of them, but I hope Spike will not be too upset to discover that Buffy's run off, as usual. Maybe her note will help (if he finds it).

Well, I can't say anything without spoiling you. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter, and I hope you continue to enjoy the fic. Thanks so much for reading and reviewing. biggrin

Summary: While vacationing in Monte Carlo, a young Buffy Summers meets the notorious William de Winter, withdrawn and desolate still from the loss of his wife. When her employer threatens to leave Europe and head back for America, William offers Buffy the choice of leaving or marrying him--a proposal she cannot refuse. With a husband she barely knows, the young bride arrives at an immense estate, only to be drawn into the life of the first Mrs. de Winter, the beautiful Drusilla, dead but never forgotten...the suite of her rooms never touched, her clothes ready to be worn, her servant-- the sinister Mrs. Hart--still loyal. And as an eerie presentiment of evil tightens around her heart, Buffy begins her search through internal destabalization and a knowledge that haunts her with every wake: she can never be Drusilla.

Interesting beginning, using Harmony as a older, obliviously overbearing and rude snob. Now I have to read Rebecca.

EDIT: I just read a synopsis of Rebecca. I was intrigued to learn that Rebecca was based on Jane Eyre, because I know I read another Spuffy story that pulled elements from Jane Eyre. It's a plot that lends itself to spuffiness. Ah, gothic romances!

Summary: For a hundred years, William the Bloody has led a trail of bloodshed and chaos across Europe and the Americas. That all comes to an end when the woman he’s devoted his existence to brings his mate to him in the guise of a late-night snack. A small girl with eyes of green and blonde hair. And suddenly, Spike is thrown into a world of color beyond the black and white, and his life is never the same.

I like this story so far. Interesting concept to explore, & well written. So that's how she gets Mr. Gordo!

This line: "In less than an hour, his world had been granted new life." made me think of the Depeche Mode song, "New Life":

I stand still stepping on the shady streets
And I watched that man to a stranger
You think you only know me when you turn on the light
Now the room is lit red danger

Complicating circulating
New life new life
Operating generating
New life new life

Transition to another place
So the time will pass more slowly
Your features fuse and your shadow's red
Like a film I've seen now show me

But then, I can relate a lot of DM songs to spuffy canon and fanfic.

This may be my favorite chapter so far. Love the dialogue between Willow and Buffy. And that "everything that rises must converge" quote sent me off to Google, and now I have new things to read by Flannery O'Connor. Then I learned about Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, from whom O'Connor took the quote. Spuffy stories are great not only as entertainment, but also for expanding my knowledge.

This was one of the first stories I read on this site. I hadn't figured out how to 'like' or review at that point. But I like this story very much, thought it had some very hot sexy scenes, and thought the idea of claims was very interesting (didn't know anything about them then.) It's still one of my favorite stories: it's on my favorites list. So, I came back to 'like' and review now that I know how to do that. This story has a couple of lines that I still remember, months after reading it for the first time, because they were so funny and also very like Spike. Maybe I'm a sicko, but I still laugh at this:

Spike saw little reason for concern. Obviously, the night had worked out well for him. He was in a bed, he was in a woman; the natural conclusion was, his carelessness hadn’t cost him his life. Rather, it seemed he’d had a right decent time.

So many good parts of this chapter: the dialogue between them, Buffy's inner thoughts, the hot sex.

Oh, good angst in the last few chapters as they both wrestle with their warring feelings of what they know they should be feeling versus what they are feeling, plus their bewilderment as to why they have these new, wrong cravings for each other. I particularly like Spike's speech to Buffy ending with '...“Maybe, just maybe, I’m not the one who’s amazingly self-confident, sweetheart.”'

But Mouse, you are not alone,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid plans of mice and men
Go often askew,
And leave us nothing but grief and pain,
For promised joy!

And slayer's plans, as well.

Their overbearing behavior leads to violation and betrayal. They completely deny her wishes regarding her own body. Ugh.

Summary: Heartbroken and determined, Spike sets out to form a truce with his mortal enemy to take down Angelus once and for all. The last thing he expected was a couple of restless spirits interrupting his sales pitch, or to find himself in a magic-induced liplock. And one taste of Buffy Summers, he finds, is nowhere close to enough.

'“Buffy, I didn’t mean—”

“I don’t care what you meant.”

Her tone told him otherwise, and colorfully. Women who truly didn’t care never sounded so hurt. He knew. He’d spent a century with a woman who didn’t care.'

Sigh. My heart breaks a bit for Spike.
