Originally written in March 2006 for the LiveJournal community "Seasonal Spuffy" - my first time posting a fic outside my own journal, in fact.

 Many, many thanks to Bogwitch and TalesofSpike for their careful and thorough beta work, and to Spike's_Heart for endless encouragement. All mistakes are entirely my fault, while what virtues this has owe much to them.

Timeline: During Lessons and “Beneath You”, going just a touch AU thereafter.

 The title and some of the inspiration come from a poem by Lord Byron, the original dark and broody antihero.
