LOVED THIS!  The whole opening was just spectacular. His desire to strangle her - attention grabbed. The description of his emotions while he drove gave the perfect amount of context for this fic. I especially loved this part:

Something didn’t add up. And the longer Spike thought about it, the more pissed off he became.

Twenty hours, it turned out, was a whole lot of pissed off.

Your Spike voice is so spot on it gave me chills.

This line was very Buffy: “I know you’re just busting to yell at me––tell me off, or use some of your stupid British words to insult me.”

And Spike's initial silence was the perfect response. I liked how he gave her the space she needed to find her words, wouldn't accept her excuses when she tried for them, and even went so far as to offer to leave if he was the problem. It was all very, very sweet (sad, but sweet).

Another line that really got to me was this: They couldn’t afford to make a habit of getting it wrong. Sex with Buffy was glorious, but not if it meant he lost the rest of her.

The ending was perfectly done. I thoroughly enjoyed this little fic, thanks for writing and sharing!

In the midst of the angst due to her father (what an asswart!!!!), I liked how she and spike actually talked. And even better she admitted a few things – to herself and to him.

And I was so thrilled to see giles back – for good, this time.

Enjoyed this very much!

Awww!  I felt the angst!  You did a wonderful job and the 'reason' Buffy ran away makes perfect sense.

Also, my daughter moved to Bellingham,  WA from Kentucky when she graduated college.  She just packed up her car, put her cat in a carrier and drove across the country.  She wasn't running away, just going on another adventure.  So, I was happy to read that city name.  It made me think of her. :)

Perfect ending too with Giles and Spike.

I think this was one of the most beautiful holiday fics I had read. Buffy admitting to needing Spike's friendship. Spike comforting Buffy and helping her out by calling Giles back. Giles coming back for her. Amazing. Thank you for sharing it.

If Buffy ever really had any doubt that Spike loves her this should definitely prove it wrong.

Wonderful 💚

squee What a fabulous fic to start off our first fic exchange!! The feels here. THE FEELS. I was riveted by the painful and tense dialogue, and the way you so masterfully had Spuffy use their one bed situation as a lodestone for repairing their relationship. Thank you so much for this glorious road trip fic!

This moment in time was perfect for Buffy doing something like this. Well, running away to Canada may seem a bit extreme but if she should do it, this was the right time. I really like how Spike is written. His anger and frustration is clearly seen but he always want to do right by Buffy. He was willing to leave if she needed that  and he made Giles come back.

This was a good story.

You hit it perfectly IMHO.

The timing was perfect for this angling off of canon. They hadn't gone beyond that first time and Buffy was still so broken and deep in denial. The friendship she and Spike had developed was left in the dust when the flames ignited (or so it seemed to her). Dawn leaving her even if only for a visit to Hank and her father's latest rejection was just one blow too many.

Spike broke my heart when he said he'd leave when she admitted he was part of why she'd run. That's exactly what I'd expect him to do. Makes sense he blamed himself. He was still blaming himself for her jump the year before and then when he started pushing for more from her... well, I can see him just accepting blame.

Everything Buffy said really seemed to fit her mental space. This is the first year without Joyce too. Buffy was carrying around so very much and a lot of it started with her mother's death really.

I love that Spike had called Giles and made him come back to stay. Maybe it will save Willow from what she became and Tara from dying. For that matter Giles would have been a large help in figuring out the trio and dealing with them too. In all ways his being there can only help. Buffy has her friendship back with Spike and her father figure back in her life. Dawn will come home after the holiday and Buffy can start to heal. Then the budding relationship with Spike can grow in a healthy way.

Lovely one-shot. Very in character and slots nicely into canon up to the turn towards a happier rest of the season and beyond.

Oh. My. Goddess. This is perfect! Buffy spending Christmas alone was in my head for ages, how did you know?! Perfect amount of angst in a sweet story. You hit all of my prompts and even got 2 more gems- road trip, and motel room with one bed! Genius. Spike calling Giles was masterful, it helped Buffy out and hopefully got Willow some help. Ending with a sweet kiss under the mistletoe was just...just...*chef kiss* perfection. What a fantastic story, thank you thank you THANK YOU!!! 💜💜💜

“Three days. There abouts.”

“Spike! You can’t–”

“You were gone,” he said flatly.

- Oof, the feels gut punched me so well here. Beautifully. And then they kicked a boot in too with the,

“How long was I–”

“No,” said Spike.

And they were only the landing thunk of the gorgeously angsty feels you'd been building with the whole scene up to there. The stubborn silence and the snow and the sleeping and the gradual reluctant drawing everything out, I love it all so very much 💜

And then you turned it around, and brought it to something so hopeful off the turning point of having failed to run from it all and facing things finally (and with help) and I just want to snuggle it all squee and fuzzy and read it over again.

I loves it, thank you 💙
