It’s nice to be grown up and mature but it’s way more fun to enjoy some Riley and Angel bashing, and I love that you let loose. A lot of fic writers go way more moderate on it, which is well and good, but so much less entertaining. Thanks for sharing![Report This]
What a joy this was! Probably one of the funnier fics I’ve ever read. A delightful blend of canon material and Shakespearean comedy of errors. The gang pretending Spike is some kind of sex slave to avoid explaining that he's a vampire had me in stitches. You really captured Spike’s internal poet, reflecting on the nature of Hearst Castle, Disneyland, and California. I did feel terribly guilty though looking up Hearst Castle; despite growing up in CA, I’d never heard of it!
I loved your characterizations of Anya, Giles, Xander, and Riley too. Buffy and Spike are of course written wonderfully, but I feel like the others are so often either simplified or written off. Riley’s rationalization for calling in the Initiative especially; I’ll never like him as Buffy's boyfriend, but at least in s4 he’s a fine character and I think you wrote a really solid explanation for his actions in this. And I found Anya displayed a lovely amount of understanding of magic and human relationships! In canon, she's kinda written like she doesn't understand basic human interaction stuff sometimes when really she's been around people more than any other character. GTFO felt much truer to her character in that regard.
Also, and maybe this was not the intent, but I do love how quickly Buffy’s able to parse her relationship with Riley as being an Angel surrogate as soon as her memories of Spike are removed. It makes a lot of sense without the need to explicitly have it spelled out. (Pun not intended.) As written, whenever she’d have a positive Spike thought, she'd tamp it down out of guilt for liking an 'evil vampire' and overcompensate by fixating on her 'good human' boyfriend. And really, you did such a bang up job of showing the little ways in which Riley and Buffy are just incompatible.
I'm so glad to have gotten to read this. Thank you so much for sharing it!
Opening up with a quote from the prophet of the new generation, I see. We're off to a great start.
Most of these recipes are way too much work anyway, you know, things you’d make for the Low Holidays…like your Passover dishes, Willow, except less blessing, more cursing. But this is a cultural artifact, part of my heritage. Surely you can appreciate that?
I like the focus on food in this chapter. And the association with ritual and communion. It reminds me of the idea of... I'm with you, I share this moment with you, I feel a bond of community with you. And it leads to Giles and Spike bonding, which parallels the discord between Buffy and Riley at the table.
Buffy looked at Riley’s sad chimichanga. He’d scraped off all the guacamole. It was going to be pretty bland without some Tapatio or Cholula. Or geez, even some Tabasco.
As someone who tends to prefer mild and/or bland food, I felt a little attacked at first. But also, scraping off the guac? That's fucked up.
The cum discussion slid to some pretty raunchy places, but mostly all I could think about was how vampire anatomy makes zero sense. And also the Semen Color Chart someone sent me once in an act of malice. (Not really, but it was definitely an I-learned-this-against-my-will moment LMAO.) Edit: By blending sex and food together during the Spike BJ scene, it also calls to mind Faith's infamous 'slaying makes you horny and hungry' quote.
The way you use fantasizing and memory to make this sexy despite Spike and Buffy being in two different places for so long is pretty impressive, ngl.[Report This]
Loved this it was hilarious. The plot was fantastic with great characterisation and it was beautifully written. I Loved your depictions of Buffy and Spike they were both wonderful conflicted a little lost yet willing to try. All the characters were so witty, quirky and fun yet still true to themselves. Please don't read this anywhere that snorting is disapproved of cos Anya got me filthy looks several times. Well done.[Report This]
You know, your Riley is actually kind of charming. Shame he's standing between Buffy and Spike, because I wouldn't mind seeing this version of the character vibe with the group some more.
I googled Mausoleum of Galla Placidia out of curiosity, and while there were lots of cool tidbits, the most important thing I learned was that it inspired Cole Porter's Night and Day. Huzzah for that and all that.
Xander being invited to girl talk in the bathroom made me grin. Looks like the whole gang'll be together soon, but not before some carjacking hijinks occur.
zion, hi! It's lovely to see you here reading this :)
I actually really liked Riley as a character. He had a lot of good deadpanned lines when he was first dating Buffy, and then honestly I loved his heel turn, because he made such a good wanna-be American Psycho-type bad guy. The scene in Into the Woods with Spike is one of my favorites in the whole series.
Hah, well, I did not know this about Cole Porter, so thank you for that!
Xander is an honorary girl, imo, and if he'd just accept that he'd be a lot less of a pain in the ass. You are correct, there are some more hijinks forthcoming.
Thanks for reading this, and saying hi :)
Well, definitely high time we got Riley out of the picture. This was a nifty little road trip, hijinks did indeed ensue. Thank you for gracing us with your talents!
Sigyn, I’m utterly delighted that you read this! Thank you for all the comments along the way, it really meant a lot <3
Well, I'm glad that played out the way it did. I love your Spike voice. Now to see what this will do to Buffy's sense of things.
>I love your Spike voice.
<3<3<3 Thank you!!!
Yes, Buffy has a lot to think about.
Well, I'm glad William seems to be coming to the fore, at least. The last thing Buffy needs is Spike trying to kill her in this state. We wouldn't get our Spuffy then.
You know, it has never once occurred to me that Spike would act in any other way towards Buffy under the Tabula Rasa spell. Now I’m curious if it happened in S2, if he’d realize he was a vampire right away and get all fangy. HMMM. :)
Oh, no. I'm very much afraid I don't like where this is going, and we don't have too much further to go. I hope Buffy gets her memory back before she does anything with Spike! Magical influence kablooey.
Hmm. Well there’s only one way to find out…
Oh, no. No, no, this is the last thing you need, Buffy. Oh, I hope that forgetting spell doesn’t come through!
A forgetting spell, what could possibly go wrong? Um. Just wait.
It would seem both Spike and Buffy are fairly lost in thoughts of each other. The bathroom scene was hilarious
I like to think that there were a lot of stray thoughts of each other after Willow’s spell. Magic has consequences! And I am delighted you liked the bathroom scene :)
God, Riley is insufferable. I’m surprised Spike’s able to kill a zebra. Where are the zebras come from, anyway? That’s California for you.
Riley *is* insufferable. I can’t imagine being stuck in a car with him.
>Where are the zebras come from, anyway? That’s California for you.
Hah! Spoken like a true Oregonian! (Willow will be explaining the zebras here shortly.)
Thank you for reading this!!!
Well, this may be a romp. Let’s dive in and see — looking forward to more hijinks.
So at the risk of sounding like some rabid fangirl who’s been lurking in the bathroom with a “I SAVED YOU SOME TOILET PAPER!”—Sigyn! Wow, thanks for reading my fic! (And telling me that you’re doing so). Absurdity is my jam, so that’s where this fic is headed. I hope you like the rest of it! Thank you so much!
Such a fun story, with a lot of humor and all the travel details were great too. I love a good road trip story and it fits so well with the chaotic vibe of S4. Spike and Giles in doing their best demon buddy comedy, the Scoobies playing a wildly inappropriate ABC game. Such a treat.
Thanks ashcrashed, I’m glad you enjoyed the trip! I would have been happy if Giles had been been stuck as a Fyarl for another episode in canon, he and Spike together were hilarious. I did my best to live up to that, anyway :)
Thank you so much for reading this!
but what was the point of pancakes if you couldn’t stack them?
Buffy asking the important questions, as usual.
It always tickles me pink when people give Buffy the sex dream/love revelation instead of Spike.
With this and Of Doom and Bondage, I'm really itching to re-watch season 4. It's such good fun despite all the behind-the-scenes issues. And I miss the chemistry between Giles and Spike there. It nicely threads the needle between meanspirited and good old fashioned taking the piss out of your mates, while later seasons just feel more plain meanspirited.
Your point about Citizen Kane reminded me of my feelings while watching Mank, which was also impressively dull without the groundbreaking camera work. What is film twitter clout if not tedium persevering.
It occurs to me that these comments are often are only tangentially related to the actual chapters. Let me know if that's annoying, lol.
:) The pancakes line is pretty much stolen from A New Man.
I think the best part of giving Buffy the sex/love dream instead of Spike is that while Spike will be ‘oh hell no, okay, well, yeah I guess so’, Buffy twists herself in knots to stay firmly in ‘hell no’ land. She’s Gumby-Buffy, dammit!
S4 is probably my favorite. It’s peak Spuffy snark without any confusing love feelings, no one important dies, and it’s got most of my favorite episodes (obv including A New Man).
I also haven’t seen Mank! (Probably because I still haven’t made myself sit through Citizen Kane, even though I thought I might after I finished this fic).
>It occurs to me that these comments are often are only tangentially related to the actual chapters. Let me know if that's annoying, lol.
It is not annoying! You are telling me things about yourself, and that’s a friendly thing to do. This is incidentally why I’m so awkward leaving comments myself, because I’m very reserved until I get to know people.
Thanks for giving this fic a try, I hope you enjoy the rest of the ride :)
It's not quite Frank Booth screaming "LET'S FUCK! I'LL FUCK ANYTHING THAT MOVES!" but I will cheerfully accept the David Lynch reference regardless. (My brain pretty much instantly defaulted to ‘I… am… a human… being’ which I assume was the point.)
As someone who follows basketball, honestly I'd take a boring Lakers fan to an insufferable one. Might be one and the same, though, lol.
"it was, precisely, an American castle…one part homage, one part outright theft, and one part something new altogether."
I do love a good road trip where everyone is miserable. I have a very exacting system for road trip stories rooted entirely in A Goofy Movie, and so far I rate this a Lester’s Possum Park/10.
Hah! Now I’ve got “Heineken? Fuck that shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon!” on repeat in my head, so thanks for that.
Also hah, you are so right, insufferable Lakers fans (or as I call them, Lakers fans) are THE WORST. I say this as a Blazers fan that lived in SoCal for a few years. *rolls eyes*
>I do love a good road trip where everyone is miserable.
I honestly have never experienced any other kind of road trip. I’ve been told they exist, but you know, people lie.
>I have a very exacting system for road trip stories rooted entirely in A Goofy Movie, and so far I rate this a Lester’s Possum Park/10
I have not seen A Goofy Movie, but now I kind of want to?
Thanks for giving this fic a try, zion, and for the comment. I hope you like the rest of it :)
Very funny story, giles and spike are a great match!
Ah, thank you Pet35, I’m glad you enjoyed this road trip :) I love Spike and Giles together in canon, they are just freaking hilarious
Fyarl’s usually have stubby tails an’ long, thick…” 🤣🤣
poor Giles, never any respect!
Loved Spike's different scenarios of his first meeting with Buffy.
Still enjoying the descriptions of the castle too!
Hah, I know! Poor Giles :)
I feel like Spike is one of those people that thinks back on things…say a century later, and *finally* has the perfect comeback. You know he’s going over every interaction with Buffy with a fine-tooth comb. I’m glad you’re continuing to enjoy the castle tour!
Loved the travelogue of the castle. You did a great job describing it. Never been there, it sounds excellent. Hopefully one day things will get back to the old normal and I can see it. Hasn't happened yet!
Loved the 'jar of something jarring' line and the koolaid man and Xandurrr reference.
And skinny dipping Spike? Yes please!
I’m glad you liked the virtual tour of the castle! When I was writing this it was very much, ‘welp, no one’s going anywhere for a while, so…’ It’s definitely worth visiting if you ever get the chance, it’s in a beautiful spot along the California coast and it’s really kind of nuts to think it was a private residence. Also, not gonna lie, the indoor pool is breathtaking, even without Naked!Spike swimming laps in it :)
For some reason I love Spike’s Bad American Accent, and him saying ‘Xandurr’ manages to work itself in to a lot of my fics.
Thanks for reading this, I’m so glad you’re enjoying it!
BEST LINE EVER: Aside from its being slightly broken, it stands out like Angelus’s prick at high school cheer practice.
Can't wait to see how this works out. Love your snarky Spike!
Squee! Thanks for reading this, Passion4Spike! There is much snark ahead, although most of the Angel-bashing will be replaced with Riley-bashing :) I hope you like it!
I'm fine with bashing of Riley and Angel in equal measure!
I really enjoyed this. It was fun to see the Giles/Spike friendship forming and Buffy begin to question the things she’d believed she knew for sure. Nice use of the memory loss spell,a do the running gag of Spike-as-sex-slave made me laugh every time. Well done!
Ah, thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed this :) Spike and Giles are so great at sniping at each other in British, I always wished that they’d been stuck together longer while Giles was a Fyarl. There’s probably another fic in me somewhere where the Tabula Rasa spell doesn’t end right away, and Giles and Randy work on their father/son relationship…
Thank you for reading this, and taking the time to leave a comment
This story was so fun to read! Very well written and hilarious. I loved seeing the interactions within each road trip group, and the finale at Disneyland was just a joy. I especially liked how you wrote Giles's relationships with both Spike and Ethan, they were both so entertaining.
(Also, while I'm not from the area, my family has driven down to SoCal several times, and it was SO cool to recognize some of names and places in this story from personal experiences)
Amina, thanks for reading this one! I’d had the idea for this fic for a while, but the whole ‘we are all trapped in 2020’ aspect of the Trapped challenge made me finally write it. I really wanted to give a feel for the places in the fic since when I was writing it no one was going anywhere. Hearst castle and Disneyland were both shut down, so I tried really hard to make it a vicarious road trip for everyone. So thank you! Hearing that your memories of these places matched up with the fic makes me really happy :) I’m so glad you enjoyed this, and thanks for taking the time to leave such a nice comment!
Great story, really enjoyed seeing the Giles/Spike relationship develop.
Hey, thank you! I feel like we all deserved a lot more Spike/Fyarl Giles from canon, so I’m glad you enjoyed this :)
