Buffy’s statement to spike after he revealed just how long he’d been away was a perfect summation of who they are; and I loved it!

Awwwww …. The morning after ‘thoughts’ – they made me cry. And the part about being better than heaven? I’m still slinging tears off of my splotchy face …

Dawn’s reaction to spike being alive (rather, boinking the power out of buffy)? I laughed so hard my hair and toenails hurt!

The gift baskets to the other slayers – aww. And I especially loved the part where they truly understood that “that you have to love the world, you have to hold on to bits of joy where you can find them and live in the world, otherwise you’ll come to resent the world you have to save and that resentment will lead you directly to your grave”. Oh gosh WHY couldn’t this have been stated so perfectly and plainly to command assent to the btvs writers ( and I think I just quoted, somewhat, a line from the movie musical 1776)

And my cat literally ran from the room screaming when I read the passage about the legal document sent to angel ( I was cackling like a demented hyena; I think that’s what scared her …)

I loved the realism about the soccer game – spike wouldn’t be able to sit still while a match was on. And buffy would be bored senseless after about ten minutes.

And the uber awwww – spike’s proposal! And I loved “ Buffy jammed the skull back on her finger where it belongs”.

Happy, happy sigh!!!

I'm just going to warn you at the outset that I'm highly likely to just c&p the entirety of this story back at you and spend the rest of the time largely screaming at you about how much I love it.

I'm really not sure if I love this one or the previous one more.  I really just kind of have to consider them part of the same story if I want to stay sane, because if I try to weigh them separately I get that feeling you get when someone asks you which child or pet is better.  And they're not even mine, so that makes it probably a bad analogy, but...

NM, I'm just getting myself into trouble, now.

Anyhoo.  Moving on.

>>“Am I going to have to be mad at you when I learn how you got back?”>>

LOL, yes, probably.

>>Buffy held Spike to her fiercely—arms wrapped around his neck, legs wrapped around his waist, and head burrowed into his right shoulder while she tried to gasp in enough air to last her through their next round of fierce kissing.>>

YES, THIS, DON'T LET HIM ESCAPE.  (which, to be fair, as far as she knew, he was dust, so, yanno)

>>Spike’s hands moved gently across her body. She didn’t think they had stopped moving once he had parked her on the kitchen table, a determined sweep memorizing every bit of her body and assuring them both that the other was real, was there, was theirs. “Prolly, yeah.”>>

It's probably unacceptable to start crying this early on in the story, right?  Esp. considering this is the happy living after one?

>>“Then I don’t want to hear about it until after we’ve made love.”>>

YOU TELL HIM.

>>“We can test the table,”—kiss—“or the floor,”—gentle bite—“or my bedroom is up the stairs”—harder bite—“through that hallway.”>>

MY VOTE IS FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE I HAVE FAITH IN YOU TWO.

>>She pulled back suddenly, a horrible thought crashing into her. “You do want me, right? I haven’t just been mauling you for the last—”>>

hehe, LMAO
I totally feel like this would so be them, because consent is like this late-coming thing they'd WANT to do in this iteration, but wasn't previously a part of their repertoire, so it's not the first instinct, and...  yeah.  Poor babies.

>>Spike interrupted her, kissing her with that fierce, brain-melting focus she loved (he could kiss like a drunk golden retriever and she would love it, love him, but the fact that he kissed with enough passion to birth a star felt like an additional, unexpected, undeserved gift just for her), and Buffy forgot everything that wasn’t the man in her arms.>>

alright, so yeah, I did copy the entire first passage back to you, but this is both hilarious and gorgeous prose and I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.

OK, I promise i'll exercise some personal restraint in the the following paragraphs.  I think.
GOD i love this fic.

>>had to get you outta there. Couldn’t let you die. Not when I could save you.”>>

can I just say how much I love that I'm not the only one who has this theory?!

>>“How long I’ve been back is another story, though.”>>

yeah, that.

>>Why the bleedin’ hell did I wait so long to get back to this goddess?>>

cuz ur stupid and listened to Angel's dumb ass

>>and now she would have to move because clearly she couldn’t deal with the awkwardness of a morning after in her own home or the pain of knowing that she had let some random guy have a morning after when she had never allowed Spike to have one and Dawn would hate her for making them move but>>

THE DEVASTATION you manage to pack into, like, phrases of ten words or less is incredible.  I just want you to know that.
And you manage to make them sardonically amusing at the same time, which is a special gift, you evil witchcraft-having-person, you.

>>Buffy had been in heaven before. This wasn’t heaven....It was better.>>

That whole preceding segment was INSANELY lyrical.  and this...?  Is kind of the basis for my Part 4 of the Souls series I've got going.  Why go back when you don't know if you can be together there (we don't know if he can go to heaven, no matter what he's done, etc, we might be separated...) HERE is where we can be together, that makes it heaven, right here, right now, so she's gonna try to stay for as long as she can, and LIVE, with him.

>>then Dawn waited for Spike to dress so she could fling herself at him and tell him that she never ever, ever, ever wanted to light him on fire or see him naked again>>

LOVE this.  Poor Spike's head.  Felled by a skillet...

>>(Spike had offered to find his own place. It was a half-hearted offer at best, but it made Buffy coldly hurt and Dawn loudly furious, and before he could shove his foot even further in his mouth, Buffy had stormed out of the room. When he found her in the bedroom, it was to his clothes tucked in Buffy’s dresser and closet with Buffy herself glaring at him like displeased royalty from the bed>>

I LOVE THIS.  could not love it more.  YOU TELL HIM, BUFFY.  HOLD HIS CLOTHES HOSTAGE TILL HE COMES TO HIS SENSES, THE IDIOT.
glad Dawn also wapped some sense into him.  The doof.

>>while Buffy called Giles up, informed him of Spike’s return, told him she refused to discuss it further>>

Because if he interferes again he should get a stake shoved where the sun don't shine, the fucking...

I mean, ahem,
#$%&^%*^%%%$^$%%^^*&(&P&*)&*(%^^$

>>announced that he was to share Spike’s description with the girls so that if anything happened to the love of her life, she could destroy whoever who touched him with a clear conscience>>

THIS.  LOL, in my post-Chosen series, when she takes him to the Scotland castle, she similarly threatens all the baby Slayers, because no fucking way will she risk him dusting again.  NO FUCKING WAY will he go by way of the stakes of a gang of infants.  JUST, NO.  It would be way too ignominious after all he's done and been through, and, just, NO.

>>Buffy had threatened people on his behalf before, and every time it made both his violence-loving demon and his oft-rejected human nature sit up and take notice.>>

RIGHT?!

>>Spike grabbed Buffy and dragged her upstairs, up to their room so he could worship her properly with his tongue and hands and cock and adoring words.>>

HEE, i mean, I'd expect nothing less, and good on him.

>>there was another time when one of them would storm out of the room because the argument was too ridiculous, too dumb, and potentially too damaging to continue until their red-hot tempers could calm. Because no matter how much they loved each other, nobody pushed their buttons like the other could. Buffy would do a hair flip combined with a sniff that made Spike want to rip her head off. Spike would affect a deadpan drawl that made Buffy see red. They would storm away, and then come back together as inevitable as the tide returning to the shore.>>

This is possibly my favorite passage in the entire thing, because it is so RIGHT, so THEM.  BEAUTIFULLY EXCELLENT.

>>Except not inevitable, Buffy found herself telling her therapist one time, because they made a choice to return. In the bad year, their colliding had felt inevitable, and it had hurt them. But now it was a choice they made because they loved each other too much to stay away too long.>>

and then you top it off with this, like this long, beautiful breath, and it's like...  aaaahhhhh....

Aaaaaaahhhh...
THAT'S SOOTHING.  AND RIGHT.

>>(Buffy’s pancakes were soaked in syrup; Spike’s were soaked in blood; Dawn’s were soaked in syrup and slathered with marmite and anchovy paste and orange marmalade).>>

ew, but yes.

>>In the days that followed, Spike always used the Man U mug for his blood, and Buffy’s morning coffee was in a plain white mug that her fingers twitched around.>>

everything about this section, from the 'where the hell is stuff' kitchen moment, to Buffy's... not my cup moment, where she totally deferred to him because she originally picked it because it would've been perfect for him, GAH

>>and I don’t think I can lift a complete replacement set, even with your able but supposedly out of practice help.”>>

ROFL

>>“We’re not buying or stealing dishes. You’re buying Buffy a coffee mug. And, jeez, who do you think I am? I have your wallet.”>>

I LOVE HER

>>Spike turned to look at Dawn. “Why am I buying your sis a new coffee mug? Aren’t there enough at the house? And when do you nick my wallet?”>>

I LOVE HIM
(He's so fucking clueless, tho, for a guy who's supposed to be the premier reader of Buffy-body-language, YOU'RE A DOPE, SPIKE.  Tbf, I suppose he hasn't the backstory, but he should've clued in that there was something making his bird twitchy about the cup thing, yo)

>>“You are buying Buffy a new coffee mug because the one you’re using is the one she bought and used every day because of you. You are getting her a different, slightly smaller one because you two are disgustingly in love and you want her to be happy and to have a mug that matches yours>>

I LOVE THE SHIT OUT OF DAWN RN.

>>And I did not nick your wallet; I grabbed it before we left because I am prepared.”>>

She is my favorite and i don't know why people have a problem with her.
Seriously love that girl.

>>A century of mayhem and bloodshed rubbed against the moment he was currently living in; ...William the Bloody laying down his fangs to pick out a sodding novelty mug for his girl on a Thursday morning while the girl’s sister walked beside him.
...And then he was handing the mug to his girl, watching Buffy’s face light up at something so stupid and inconsequential, and the moment clicked back into place for him. He was William the Bloody, Slayer of Slayers, and he was the happiest he had ever been in his entire life.>>

I didn't cry when i read this the first time, or the second time, or the third time, or this time.  I swear.
(lying my ASS off)

>>That Friday, the girls stayed home, ate chocolate, watched movies, painted their nails, and remembered that for all they were slayers, they were also girls. Because yeah, it was their job to save the world. But the one thing Buffy had taught them that no Watcher had ever thought to teach a slayer was that you have to love the world, you have to hold on to bits of joy where you can find them and live in the world, otherwise you’ll come to resent the world you have to save and that resentment will lead you directly to your grave.

Fucking brilliant, and exactly the kind of thing Buffy and only Buffy can pass on, even over and above Faith, and the thing that will keep them all alive, AWESOME

also; LOVE the legal stuff to Angel.  The sonofabitch.  GAH
ROT IN HELL, ANGEL
(ok, so I go out of my way to be 'fair' and 'three-dimensional' in my portrayals of Angel and Xander in my fics, (and i even try with Riley), because i don't wanna be accused of bashing... but in the privacy of my own mind...  even just for this thing with keeping Spike in LA?
FUCK Angel.

>>able to love beyond anyone’s deserving, trusting even where trust clearly wasn’t deserved, silly and ridiculous when she let herself be, and bloody smart.>>

just the best description, jesus

During that terrible year and the less terrible but still not great year after it, he had known her better than anyone else, better even than she herself did. Which also meant he didn’t know her, because who can know anyone when that person is a mystery to themselves, who has secrets and motives hidden so well that they themselves don’t know them but that, as the mysteries still exist, can change everything?...He knew her, but he also didn’t know her. And during the past year, she had clearly come to know herself and, in the doing so, had changed.>>

This is brilliant

>>Which just meant that Spike had a chance to learn her all over again.>>

of course he'd just love that.  a challenge and a joy, for him.

>>“I mean in Merry Ol’, love.>>

you know, for a smart guy, he's really just incredibly stupid, sometimes.

>>She did, snuggling her face into his chest in such a way that made a part of him (okay, all of him) purr in contentment.>>

the thing that losing him would have taught her above everything was to fucking TREASURE him, and the MOMENTS, because YOU NEVER KNOW.

>>“Because you felt closest here. I would hear someone speak with your accent or take a ride on the Eye and see an old city that was modern and full of life and I would feel close to you.”>>

THIS.
I have a scene where they discuss this in the story I'm putting up now, and yeah.  It just floors him, doesn't it, that she'd... do that.

DOPE
>>His girl had chosen to stay in dreary London, had chosen to let her perpetual California tan fade, because it made her feel close to him. And he was speechless. Words couldn’t explain the awe he felt at knowing that she had committed to an entire bleeding city despite the encouragement of her Watcher just so she could feel close to him.  ...Love like that was enough to make a man religious.>>

oh, like you weren't already.
But yeah.  For sure.  Absolutely.

GOD I LOVE THIS STORY.

>>threw herself at him in joy. Her arms had a stranglehold on his neck as she spoke fiercely to him: “Thank you for coming back. Buffy wanted you so much. She was going to be okay, but she wanted you, and you came back. Thank you, thank you, thank you for coming back to her.”>>

I can't even describe how much i love this scene, because it encapsulates the closeness they get in the comics, but without the weirdness of her knowing he's back but not really talking about it with Buffy or whatever stupid shit, and, just, yeah.

>>“Why Manchester U? Why not some other football club?”>>

SOMETHING WE ALL WANT TO KNOW, BECAUSE IT MAKES LESS THAN ZERO SENSE FOR HIM TO FOLLOW THOSE WANKERS INSTEAD OF CHELSEA OR ARSENAL OR SOMETHING (this is me letting it go, but god, the complicated backstory shit i've had to come up with to account for that crap, holyfuck)

>>“If you had to live in one place for the rest of your life, where would it be?” / “Right by your side, Slayer.”>>

I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING
I'M VERY EMOTIONAL TONIGHT, OKAY?

>>They had fun in bed. They still had a lot of fantastic sex, but they also would just cuddle. Spike would read to Buffy all the classics she never had time to read in high school, all the poetry she wanted to read in college, all the cheesy horror books that made them laugh.>>

second favorite passage of the fic, maybe?

>>(Never Bram Stoker’s Dracula, even though Buffy had declared it cheesy; it always put Spike in a mood even when he was mocking the vamp’s affectations.)>>

snerk

>>“Look, I know they don’t need you anymore than they need me, but if you take care of Buffy and Dawn for me, Willow too when she’s around and needs backup, I can give you a second a chance if you can give me one.”>>

...I can almost cope with this.  I... mostly make my peace with Xander starting with his speech to Dawn and the boarding up the window thing and moving fwd.  Ish.

>>“Eh, we could always go down to the pub if they get too fractious. Let them blow off some steam and enjoy a few holiday pints with the rest of the blokes avoiding their women.”... “See, that’s the kind of thinking that’s been missing from the Scoobies all these years. Too much estrogen in the group.”>>

AND IF YOU'D THOUGHT LIKE THAT YEARS AGO AND JUST KEPT ON THE WAY YOU DID WHEN BUFFY WAS DEAD, THINGS WOULD'VE BEEN SO MUCH EASIER DAMMIT XANDER (okay i guess i'm still not completely over it, but i'll try, for Buffy's sake)

>>the slayers got to watch Buffy smile brilliantly at Spike, run across the distance separating them, leap into his arms, and kiss him with all the fire and passion of a girl who was once told she was full of love. It was, the slayers stationed in Iran assured the other girls via chat that evening, even better than the kiss at the bottom of the ravine in The Princess Bride.>>

ok i lied, this is the other best passage.  *cries a little*

>>The first time Spike watched her teach a lesson to some bro with an attitude and a pungent cologne while holding back almost all her power and still not breaking a sweat, he had gotten a hard-on that had taken screwing her twice in the locker room and five times at home to diminish.>>

*giggles*

>>The second time, he provided commentary to the regulars of Big Joe’s club that caused them to double over laughing. Then he had gotten to spar with Buffy; fighting with her felt like the revelation it had always been but with a side of post-fighting snuggles and orgasms once they had made it back to the house.>>

This whole thing is great.  And, great minds think alike.  I have her teaching self-defense lessons to inoffensive demons and their human friends/family at one point in a rented dojo, so simliar milieu.

>>His girl and her world had changed while he was gone. But as he greeted the gym rats at Big Joe’s place while Buffy moved purposefully toward a punching bag, Spike could also admit that his greatest honor after having her love was to keep meeting each new version of his girl, his bright effulgent queen who could mop the floor with him if she so chose.>>

GOD he makes me swoon

>>(She kept it in her jewelry box. With things from her mum, her grandmum even. She saved Mr. Gordo, birth certificates, and bits of family heirlooms, and his ring was important enough to rank with the important bits worth saving when the world was falling into hell.  Fuck, but this girl could break a man down to nothing and then rebuild him into a giant.)>>

I ABSOLUTELY headcanon this.  In fact, I have a whole segment of a chapter on it in the story I'm posting.  And we're brain-twins on a lot of this stuff.

also, the black t-shirt and apron thing is the bestest, and I'm sure has him on the floor.  Please say she listened to the Ramones or the Pistols while she did it so he could literally die... and then drag her upstairs to shag her brains out.  (Picturing her bopping along to, like, "Orgasm Addict" while his mouth drops open in shock, and then he gets so turned on he loses his damn mind)

>>This picture lasted for about ten minutes in real life, at which point someone did something Spike didn’t agree with—Buffy couldn’t tell whether it was someone from their team or the team with blue on their jerseys or if it was a call a ref made that pissed him off—and he stood up, unceremoniously dropping her to the floor in a move that made her yelp, to shout at the television and pace.>>

this is fucking hilarious and precisely how i watch sportsball, so I coulda told her how it was gonna turn out, poor girl with her cute, romantic fantasy.

>>And when the game was over, Spike would either triumphantly burst into the kitchen to kiss Buffy and steal cookies or slink in to kiss her and get sympathy for the loss and steal cookies.>>

Tres adorable.  PARFECT.

>>Sometime after that the other poems start spilling into their life together. Buffy doesn’t say anything, but Spike tells her anyway that it’s her fault for being so happy, for glowing, effulgent, a glorious golden goddess on earth walking where mortals dare not tread. It’s her fault her recipes and shopping lists begin to get bits of poetry in the margins, poetry about her and fighting and the Bit and home and football and her, her, her.>>

I'M NOT...
Fuckit, I'm crying.
shit, this is beautiful, I lied, THIS is the best segment in the whole damn thing.

>>Buffy saves each one, makes him read them aloud to her by kissing her way up Spike’s neck and tugging gently at his earlobe with her teeth until he’s breathing heavy and clutching at her with desperate hands. Spike tells her that he can tell she’s a goddess because only a goddess would demand such tribute from her poor worshipper. Buffy responds by telling him she has to be demanding; he’s the only worshipper whose tribute she’s willing to accept.>>

*fansself while still kind of bawling a little*
The fact that she uses him against himself to get him to accept himself and build a sense of self-worth in his William-ness is, like a THING for me, I BELIEVE in it, in her building him up that way.  YAS to this.

>>and so he simply drops to his knees, poem prepared and stuffed in his back pocket and ring waiting in his front one. Buffy cries and says yes and flings herself at him, and Spike doesn’t even get a chance to say that he wants to buy her a real ring before Buffy’s jammed the skull back on her finger where it belongs and begun kissing him senseless.>>

FINE, YOU CLEARLY WANTED TO JUST MAKE ME A SOBBING MESS TONIGHT, DAMN YOU, I LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH, YOU CRUEL, WONDERFUL PERSON, FUCK.

Author's Response on May 03, 2020 12:00am

I love when you basically copy and paste the entire thing back at me, because it reminded me how much I love this fic and the previous one. Like, my heart is all in these two fics.

The great thing about Spike being a vampire and not needing to breathe (besides, you know, the obvious) is the fact that Buffy can cling to him like a koala as tight and long as she wants and he just has to deal. Hope you don't have weekend plans, Spike, because Buffy needs to make sure that you're still here by clutching you to herself 24/7.

MY VOTE IS FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE I HAVE FAITH IN YOU TWO.

IT'S TRUE THEY ARE CREATIVE AND IN LOVE AND HAVE STAYING POWER.

THE DEVASTATION you manage to pack into, like, phrases of ten words or less is incredible.  I just want you to know that.
And you manage to make them sardonically amusing at the same time, which is a special gift, you evil witchcraft-having-person,
you.

Thank you! This is just the best compliment. blow_kiss

Also, Buffy should hold his clothes hostage long after he comes to his sense. Does he really need clothes? Probably not! You know what those flashbacks to Spike's past with the Scourge told us? He did evil things while wearing clothes. We have no proof that he was anything but good while naked. She should keep them.

And ugh, Giles. We forgave that man for a lot of shit that he pulled but his efforts to get rid of Spike after not being around were just beyond the pale. Ugh.

I am so glad you love the passage about them fighting! I had to include something about that because these two are both too strong-willed to ever just live completely peacefully together, especially since they both like fighting with the other. But they've got to do it in a healthy way, not Spike ripping Buffy to pieces and Buffy punching him in the face.

In Spike's defense, he's been through a lot, and she's been through a lot, and this has all happened very quickly. If Dawn hadn't intervened, he would have figured out something was wrong in probably another week. But also, I assume Buffy isn't a morning person due to her slaying duties, and if morning Buffy is anything like morning me, then low-level murderous rage is the order of the morning, so tapping fingers against a mug could also be interpreted as a way to let out aggression without wringing necks for daring to speak first thing in the morning.

I had so much fun writing the legal stuff for Angel. Hahahaha get out of that if you can, sucker.

heartsheartshearts

Oooh, is this a good place to confess I haven't read the comments? I also haven't made it past, like, season 3 of Angel because when they brought Darla back I was like "hahaha nope" so everything I know about the end of Angel and the comments comes from fanfic?

I STRUGGLE SO MUCH WITH XANDER and trying to not just bash him all the time because he does have good points and he does do good things (I love when he matter of factly delivers Buffy the rocket launcher for her birthday and is just like "I hope you like the color") but also HE DOES SO MUCH DAMAGE OH MY GOD. So, for this fic, I decided to let him and Willow mend fences with Buffy while leaving Giles delegated as, like, that relative you have to invite to holiday meals but you're always glad when they can't make it. Because when he gets his head out of his ass, he can be a good friend. He fixed a lot of shit in Buffy's house.

But I'm also still so furious over how they all kicked Buffy out of her own house in season 7 and how Buffy just let them like oh my god Joss what is your fucking problem and then I don't want to forgive him.

We are brain twins because we are both brilliant. We should have been writers for the show.

also, the black t-shirt and apron thing is the bestest, and I'm sure has him on the floor.

RIP Spike. Cause of death, his girl in his clothes dancing to his music drool

I am so glad that you loved the poetry end bits to this fic because they are why I wrote this sequel. Someone on AO3 asked me what would happen after "How to Eat" and I just....gave them a super long comment that ended with parts of this and I loved it so much it became this. And I love this chunk so much still.

I am sorry for all your tears but not actually because they're watering my fic-writing crops thank you for your donation of tears.

And for your wonderful comment! hug

My heart melted.   So beautiful.  I love post AtS season 5 stories so much.  Authors who can manage to put all the angst and horror of canon into a sweet, sexy story have my heart.

Thank you!

I am so glad you enjoyed this and that your heart is all melted goo now. I also love authors who can take the horror and angst and stress of canon into something sweet and sexy, so I am honored that this story was able to meet that high criteria for you.

I read this fic when it first came out and then life happened so I didn't get a chance to comment and I'm making up for that now.  I absolutely love this second installment - not surprisingly, since I loved the first!  The best part of not leaving a comment the first time around is that now I have to read it again, oh darn.  Yeah, not a hardship in the least!

I love how they started, Buffy not wanting to argue but to get the happy nookie off the ground first, and then temporarily second-guesses herself in questioning whether Spike wanted her.  Silly rabbit.  You've hit the description of what happens next with a solid bullseye:  the fact that he kissed with enough passion to birth a star felt like an additional, unexpected, undeserved gift just for her.  I have a theory that Spike Kisses on their own are technically astounding but they are truly extra special for his Slayer.  Lovely beginning.

It's a sign of how far she's come - how much she's learned through cooking and otherwise - that she wants Spike to kiss me until I forget everything you’ve just told me.  Those who don't carry grudges get the nuzzling and the happy realization that Spike was alive. Undead. Whatever. He was here and he loved her, leading to untroubled sleep.

All the little glimpses throughout are just wonderful, from Dawn taking Spike to buy Buffy her own Man U mug, the Carbonara in bed, adding up to all the beauty of them simply enjoying life together as only they can.  I love all these moments, leading up to Spike finding their ring in with her most treasured things, knowing this girl could break a man down to nothing and then rebuild him into a giant and wanting nothing but that for as long as he can have it.

Whenever I am in need of some ideal moments of love and affection between these two, I love to come back and revisit this fic again.  It takes the bad taste of whatever angst I've been experiencing off my tongue and puts me in the best places where two of my favorites have the happy ending they both want and deserve.

Author's Response on April 09, 2020 11:43am

Kat, I will take your lovely, beautiful comments whenever you get a chance to leave them, be they on the first read or seventh. They are so good, always.

Spike has one hundred years of experience in kissing, and we all know that Drusilla wasn't in love with Spike in the way that he was in love with her so I also 100% ascribe to the theory that he is amazing at kissing. (And, frankly, everything else.) But yeah, when it's for Buffy? It's not just excellent skill and technique; it's passion and love and all those swoony romance novel things that make you actually weak in the knees.

And yes, poor Buffy in canon learned she could never just enjoy a moment and ignore everything else, she always had to interrogate everything and make sure everything was fine before she could let her guard down. (I, frankly, blame Angel, but also Riley for letting her think their relationship was fine while he slipped out at night to get suck jobs.) This Buffy doesn't have all the work of saving the world on her shoulders to make those interrogations necessary and also has let go that need due to having missed Spike so much. She needs the moment with him more than she needs confirmation that no information or threat will come out of nowhere to startle and hurt her.

I'm so glad you love this, and I'm so glad you keep coming back to it. I know that I am doing a lot of going back to my favorite comfort fics right now because the world is a flaming trash fire of stress and heartbreak, so I hope that if you're doing the same thing, you're finding comfort and warmth. You are wonderful and delightful; happy reading and rereading.

Perfect sequel! The characters voice are authentic and the writing suits them..  there's tenderness and snarking, loving and fighting, funny moments and cooking.. loved it!

Is there anything better than tenderness and snarking? I feel like that's half the reason I love Spike and Buffy!

No such thing as overboard with fluffy!

As for my Aunt, I asked my dad if she got better at making bread, and he said, "to be honest I was scared to after that! Then she started making weird bread, like pumpkin bread (neither dad or I like pumpkin) but I assume she did" So I think it was more a curse of first try, haha.

I will let you know if I make bread.  The recipe that I have takes between 6 and 8 hours with rising times, cause its supposed to rise 3 times before baking. But its good, and now that I know I am only supposed to punch the dough down once, just to pop air bubles instead of the multiple punches I did hopefully it'll be more airy instead of slightly dense Haha.

biggrin

Author's Response on February 16, 2020 08:21pm

Your aunt can send her pumpkin bread to me; that stuff is delicious.

And good luck with the bread making!

Angelsheart1 Replied on April 05, 2020 08:40pm

I promised I would let you know when I made bread.  I made bread!  It did all 3 rises better then the first time I did it!  woohoo!  in 33 minutes it will be baked and, hopefully, consumed.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Thanks again for writing this story.  Such a happy read, and inspiring!  (I channeled my inner Buffy while kneading. )

You are so sweet!  Thank you for these recommendations!  I am feeling more normal now, but can always use happy stories in my life! And these sound, and in the cases of what I have read are, delightfully fluffy!

As for bread, I have made bread once (and my dad said "good job! Its edible! Your aunts first time making bread I couldn't even cut it. It thunked when it hit the table" so yay for that!  I use a cutting board when I knead the bread cause then all I have to do is carry the board to the trashcan and wipe the excess flour and whatever bits of dough stuck into the trash, wash the board and put it up.  I don't have much counter space so thats what has worked for me, but might make it easier on you if you want the bread but easier clean up smile.

Thank you again!flowers

Author's Response on February 11, 2020 11:53pm

I am so glad you're feeling better now, but you should probably go overboard on the fluffy fics to make sure the world is right. Right? wink

Hahaha, my bread has never thunked; your aunt must be a miracle of poor baking skills in order to do that! But kneading the bread on a cutting board is brilliant. I also have very limited counter space, so I might just have to try that. Thanks for the suggestion! And let me know if you do end up making any bread and how it turns out.

I love these stories!  They make me happy.  And they make me want to make bread at odd times of night, but oh well.

I remember you saying that this sequel wasn't planned, and that there isn't any future stories planned in this series, but I hope inspiration hits for more of this, or something were Buffy learns to cook, because these have made me crave (haha) more Cook Buffy fics!

Author's Response on February 11, 2020 07:21pm

Thank you for your sweet comment! I'm glad you're loving these stories and that they're making you want to make bread. (I love the idea of making bread, but the actual making of bread? With all the kneading and scrubbing dough off your countertop afterward? No thanks.)

This sequel very much wasn't planned. But you're right, here we are. So while they aren't any additional fics planned in this series, who knows what might happen? Between cooking shows I love and cookbooks I own and the fact that I have to feed myself every day (which can just be the worst) inspiration might strike at any time.

But also, as I said on the first fic, don't hold your breath. I don't want you to pass out waiting for me.

Author's Response on February 11, 2020 07:41pm

Also, I just saw the shoutbox, and I am both thrilled to pieces for all the people reccing me for ridiculously happy stories and also so glad my stories helped. I hate when I stumble across a story that hurts me for whatever reason and I'm either too invested in the story to just let it go by the time it starts hurting or it comes out of nowhere, so I know exactly how you're feeling.

Can I add a few more recs to your queue, if you still need a pick me up or to add to your list of happy fics?

"He kissed with enough passion to birth a star" – great line!

I really shouldn't laugh at Dawn hitting Spike in the head with a skillet but, oh, I am.

Given the circumstances outlined in part one of the story, I don't think it's fair to be mad at Spike for not going to Buffy earlier. That was all Angel's doing. If she wants to stab him again, I'm all for it.

"Spike pulled his blood out of the refrigerator before looking around the kitchen with the bewildered air of someone who doesn’t know where anything is." – This made me chuckle. And the bit about Dawn "staring at the coffee pot as if it would shortly hold the answer to life’s questions" too.

Of course she would have syrup, marmite, anchovy paste, and orange marmalade on her pancakes. Ick!

“You are buying Buffy a new coffee mug because the one you’re using is the one she bought and used every day because of you. You are getting her a different, slightly smaller one because you two are disgustingly in love and you want her to be happy and to have a mug that matches yours. And I did not nick your wallet; I grabbed it before we left because I am prepared.”

^^ LOL. Disgustingly in love. Fantastic!

"Theoretically, it was impossible for a vampire to turn paler than the hue given to them at their death and subsequent reanimation. Lack of blood and inability to tan and all that. Angel’s face, however, still managed to become a shade even Maybelline couldn’t match." Pahahahaha!

"When Dru used to toss him those looks, it drove him nuts. When Buffy did it though, he had to hold back his smile. Amazing how being loved back would make Love’s Bitch more patient." Aww! Another great line *grins*

The image of them sitting in bed, eating is so sweet!

"And when the game was over, Spike would either triumphantly burst into the kitchen to kiss Buffy and steal cookies or slink in to kiss her and get sympathy for the loss and steal cookies." Of course, of course biggrin

"Dawn announces loudly and semi-regularly that she loves them but they need to not be mushy and gross in rooms she might walk into." lol

And, AWWW! That final paragraph!! I won't copy and paste it here because I've probably already gone overboard with that, and you already know what it says – because hey, you wrote it – but, *squees*

This gave me such warm, snuggly feels. Thank you! flowers

Author's Response on February 11, 2020 08:02pm

Oh gosh, I love this comment.

I feel like getting kissed by Spike is a spiritual experience, and as a conscientious writer, I really must make that clear in my fics. Anything else would be dishonest.

I laughed writing Dawn hitting Spike with a skillet, so you should definitely feel free to laugh at him while reading it.

Oooh, Buffy being angry at Spike for not coming back sooner. I really feel like this moment shows the growth she's been through because Buffy of two years ago would have yelled at him and punched him in the face and kicked him out, she'd be so angry with him. Whereas now she's recognizing that she's angry, that her anger is covering her hurt, and that anger isn't the best emotion here and so she has to work through it. She tells him what she needs, and they talk through it. Angel is obviously the worst and the fault gets laid squarely at his door later on, but Spike also doubted her and didn't try to follow her, and that hurts her. (And yes, he doubted her because she never gave him much reason not to doubt her, and so some of her anger is covering her hurt at him and some is her being angry with herself, and both emotions need to be worked through for them to be healthy together.) And they work through it! I wanted here to make clear that sometimes we have emotions that aren't fair or rationale, but we have them and so long as we're honest about them and work through them, as Spike and Buffy do here, it'll be okay.

They are so disgustingly in love. And I adore it. And they have to have matching coffee mugs because they're that couple.

The legal documents to Angel was my favorite bit to write of this entire fic except for the very end. He doesn't deserve to get beat up, that's too much passion for him; what he deserves is a legal trouncing. Mwahahaha

You are the first person who has commented on the "Dawn announces loudly and semi-regularly that she loves them but they need to not be mushy and gross in rooms she might walk into" line, and that is one of my favorite lines in this fic so thank you so much for acknowledging it. hearts

And I love that final paragraph. I am so glad you do too.

Thank you so so so much for this lovely comment! I now have warm snuggly feels as well. blow_kiss

Author's Response on February 12, 2020 11:00pm

So I just reread the first fic in this series and realized I actually never had Spike doubting Buffy and instead he did always try his hardest to get to her. Way to go past me for writing it like that, because I like it so much more than canon. But that means you can ignore all those bits in my response. I stand by everything else. Also, whoops!

Ahhhh, this, THIS is the oasis I've been dreaming of, hoping for - for so long!  yay  Like in your Buffy's thoughts, This wasn’t heaven.  It was better.  hearts  I feel like I've been slogging along in a dry, repressively hot, sticky-sandy, desolate desert ... and then came upon your story of refreshing, delightful, soul-quenching charm!  Rescuing me with utterly adorable Spuffy domestic tranquility !!!  squeeThis, this is the Spuffy story I crave.  I can never get enough of two things: William Pratt, and HEA Spuffy.  There just isn't enough.  Your story is just lovely, hitting all the right notes and landing it so perfectly.  I didn't want it to end, because I could read their HEA as the main course in a set of very long books and still want more.  It's delicious beyond measure - yum!  I'm so happy Buffy grabbed him back into her life and isn't letting go.  Love that she didn't feel like she would have to agonize over it and angst the hell out of it - Thank you so much for not doing that !!!

Hilarious how Dawn found them!  She was so bewildered and flustered, hitting his head and then dropping the pan on Spike's head (again) as she fled the room!  LOL  Poor Spike's cranium!

Loved how Dawn got loud and Buffy got mad when Spike offers to get his own place - and Buffy is all, "I'll show you -getting your own place' - pppfffttttt!!!!!  I adore how she went right into her room and angrily put his things away in the drawers and closet, just daring him to do anything about it!  LOL   LOVE IT!  applause

The Man U mug incident - so excellent!  Loved it when Dawn took charge and helped Spike understand what the mug meant.  And him fixated on her nicking his wallet - FUNNY!

The part where Buffy sends the slayers in L.A. chocolate baskets and thanking them, wow, I loved that too!  It thrilled me when I read that the slayers all got mad at Spike and Andrew when they found out that Spike didn't go to Buffy immediately - I loved how loyal they were to Buffy and stood up for her and her heart.  Lovely.  Perfect.  And Buffy teaching them the most important thing, is that they have to love the world or it all just doesn't mean anything.  That's how the slayers should be toward one another, to borrow a motto, 'all for one and one for all' really fits in this case.

Completely and wholly justified in sending that 'legal bomb' to asshat Angel.  He deserved so much worse (a wholly justified ass kicking was needed too, but, well, this was GOOD! ) than just the legal bomb Buffy threw at him, but, boy howdy, it was perfect!!!!!!!!  No question about where she stood after he received that.  LOL  hahaapplause  And everyone would know, too, thus thoroughly embarrassing the bigbutt-forehead.  HAHAHAHAHA

Wonderful that Buffy so willingly told Spike that she chose London because of him.  Love how she didn't hesitate or wasn't embarrassed and just told him that she needed to be near a place that was close to him.  Beautiful.

So happy that Spike can help Buffy with her nightmares and in doing so, they learn more of one another and grow ever closer.  I love this:  If you had to live in one place for the rest of your life, where would it be?”  “Right by your side, Slayer.”  heart

How freakin' adorable is it that he reads to her all the books and poetry that she never had time for while fulfilling her Slayer duties.  It's pretty damn adorable! hearts  And her idea of eating in bed and snuggling = so freakin' CUTE!!!  All the ways that you describe how Spike looks at Buffy is so spot on, and so Spike, that you can so easily picture each one of those faces.

Thank goodness Xander has grown into some sense!  Wonderful.  He and Spike could be such great and funny friends - finally here is their chance and it looks like a good one.  YaY  And bless Willow for her wonderful reaction of Spike being back and in Buffy's life.  heart

Love it that the slayers have a chat room and tell stories of epic Spuffy escapades and kisses!  LOVE IT!  heart  LOL  So cool that they are happy for her and are all on her side with support and loyalty.  Deeply heartwarming.

oh my goodness, I adore how Buffy works out her anger now - pastries!  LOL  haha   So much safer and more positively productive!  Everybody wins; yummy food to share and no Buffy bruises or worse to heal from.  Win-Win!  And the boxing club, LOL!  Oh my heck, that is so excellent!  Made the mistake of eating a cookie while reading about Big Joe's club - about choked, laughing so hard.  Spike's so proud of her that he can't settle "down" (ahem, wink wink) and I can just imagine his commentary making the regulars double over with laughter!  Oh boy, I want that one-shot written, so badly!  Buffy taking down and embarrassing the hell out of some dumb, big ox that has an attitude like Liam-Angelus.  Hahaha, Spike would never be able to calm down after that!  devil LOL  Spike's snarky, hilarious comments would reach Buffy's ears while in the ring and she'd just laugh and smile, using it as her fuel.

This whole bit = His girl and her world had changed while he was gone...  Spike could also admit that his greatest honor after having her love was to keep meeting each new version of his girl, his bright effulgent queen who could mop the floor with him if she so chose.  Swoon-worthy.  So lovely.  hearts

Spike going through her jewelry box and finding the ring = what a precious moment for his heart.  heart

I'll always remember about Spike's black t-shirt whenever I make marinara.  LOL  Of course she'd take his shirt!  LOL

Spike dumping Buffy on the floor over getting upset about his football is so realistic!  Definitely would happen, it's just so Spike and so funny!  Him coming to her after the game is also soooo Spike.  It's perfect.

How poetry begins to fill their lives is gorgeous and how she tells him that his poetry gave to him the words that were just what she needed at the time.  She shows him his words are meaningful and needed and by saying that, she gives him the freedom to really be who he is inside, also.  Lets him know that William is welcome and wanted.  Beautiful beyond words. flowershearts

Awww, his proposal is just right.  I love all the thoughts Spike has about what "he wants" because that is absolutely brilliant and am so happy that he will finally get what he wants after all.   His wants are breathtakingly simple, yet so immeasurably beautiful.  Buffy is one damn lucky woman.  Wow.  Is it possible to be envious of fictional characters?  lol

It's my sincere hope that you will re-visit this series with one-shots (or more) that give us glimpses into their HEA, from time to time.  Plus, give us updates on Buffy's culinary triumphs - like perhaps she wants to learn cake decorating after she gets the cake part down pat - the icing escapades!  Or maybe she gets interested in Dutch Oven cooking and tries out what she's learned on a romantic camp-out vacation with Spike.  Please, there is endless ways you could give us a peek into their HEA; holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, vacations, hobbies, etc...  As I've always thought, the HEA is where the story really begins...

Thank you for providing the oasis that I needed, and I know I will be re-reading this from time to time as my refreshing dip into a beautiful pool, sipping my delicious drink of choice, feeling relaxed and comfortable in such a warm, welcome and happy environment.  My personal escape.  Thank you.  hug  cheers

Edited to add:  YaY Sweetprincipale - I agree, she IS lovely and most definitely does deserve lovely things!

LovingWill, you should know that I have had this comment up on my laptop, ready to respond to, since I received the email notification and I haven't been able to because this comment is just so good. Like, how can I respond to this thought, kind, delightful greatness in a way that does it honor? You are a delight, my friend.

I am so glad you are right here with me in needing delightful domestic, HEA Spuffy. I love the writers who write long fics and create new big bads and delve into people's psyches and twist one tiny plot point and explore how that changes the entire series, and I have come to accept I am not that writer. I don't have the attention span! I just want them to be happy 100% of the time! 98% at the worst! I cannot put these babies through hard times; that's what canon is for! So welcome to my oasis. Let's get a cabana boy out here with a fruity, boozy beverage and chat.

I love all the details that you picked out here, because I loved inserting. The cast iron pan to Spike's skull! The Man U mug! The fact that Buffy was living in London to keep hearing Spike's voice! Buffy giving the baby slayers the lessons that might have made her years of being the slayer more life and joy! The nice thing about not creating a big story with lots of plot is that I can marinate in those details, and I always appreciate when someone else falls into and loves those details.

I perhaps had way too much fun writing up the legal response to Angel. He's just the worst, totally the type to look at a list of ways he's not allowed to contact someone, realize sending postcards isn't on the list, and immediately stock up on postcards. Then he'll try to trip you up on the technicality.

And yes! Friends Xander and Spike! I don't think they'll ever be besties, but they can be friends so long as they don't have to see each other too regularly. Xander needed to do a lot of growing up, and I think he's done so.

Is there a better way to work out frustrations than pastries and putting men in their place? If so, I can't think of one. (And I bet that one shot would be fun to write. We'll see...)

I'm so glad you loved Spike getting to know Buffy again. She's grown so much in this world while he's been gone, and I love the idea that each change is like a fun little surprise for him to unwrap and unravel. And we see some of them--that she bakes when she's frustrated, that she lives in London rather than someplace sunny--and I like that Spike gets to keep seeing them and witnessing how the girl he knew made the girl she is now.

I almost made Spike cuddle Buffy throughout the game, and then realized that no, he is definitely the type to pace and shout during matches. He provides commentary for Passions; there's no way he would take a game lying down quietly.

The poetry was one of my final additions to this, and I love it so much. I'm so glad you enjoyed it too.

I am so so so glad you liked the proposal. So glad. I was so nervous writing it, but this fic needed it. And yes, he just wants to yell at idiots daring to check out his wife! He'll yell at them now for checking out his girl, but "wife" has so much more of an impact! And since Buffy isn't crazy about him flashing fang at places they visit regularly, he needs all the impact he can get because Buffy's just so gorgeous! (And I am very jealous of Buffy for having Spike, so you can feel free to join the club.)

Thank you for all the tempting ways to continue this series. It originally wasn't a series, just one fic, and then people asked about what a sequel would be like and I am weak so . . . there's a distinct possibility that might happen again! (Like, can you picture Buffy in a pie making contest?)

Feel free to come back to this oasis whenever you need to. Cabana boys and fruity beverages will be waiting. blow_kiss

AEGHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Oh my God Oh my God Oh my God!!! This is amazing. IT's S EFFING GOOD. I literally squealed with delight the entire time. Literally. You could ask my husband. He came upstairs because he thought I was hurt, but it was just me screaming because this piece of pure unadulterated beauty was dedicated to me.  I swoon. And then I squealed while I read it, but it became such a regular occurrence, he stopped asking why.

Now, to the best bits, the actual glorious, effing wonderful writing, oh my gosh... I wish you could see the excitement in my head.

I LOVEEEEE the part (wait, I love every single part of this, but I have to be somewhat selective, right?) where Dawn takes him to buy the mug. I love where Dawn knocks him out. I love where the sisters have this whole bonding in the kitchen thing while Spike screams at Man U.

I love that Buffy told Giles to tell every single Slayer what Spike looked like- not just to protect him, but to be certain her vengeance would be correct and righteous. I love that Willow and Xander made peace and Angel got the hard cut off.

I love that Spike explained so simply, that he had to get her out, that he had to save her if he could. You bring tears to my eyes, and yet I smiled the whole dang time I was reading.  (Have I mentioned that you will be famous and that I am jealous, but in a nice way?)

Your description of their lovemaking and bonding is beautiful and not overdone or underdone. The chemistry was hot and sweet and perfect. (Do we see the theme? Perfection.)

Oh and Big Joe!!! Argh! You had me tittering with laughter and I only wish you had given us some of Spike's commentary because I know it would be gold.

The way Buffy reassures him that he would have been a great poet. The way he gives her his shirt and does the laundry. Honey... this thing is a world-beater. I love it. I love how you write. I'm gushing and I don't care who knows. I unashamedly gush.

I have to stop for now, though. I could keep writing all night, but I would much rather go back and read again.

Love and Gratitude, Sweet

Sweet, anytime I can get someone screeching so much that someone has to go check on them, I feel as though I've reached the highest possible pinnacle. And to write so that you were checked on and then your husband just gave up on checking on you? Beyond an honor. I'm so glad I could stress your hubby out in this way. (Please send him my apologies.)

One of my favorite bits of receiving thorough comments is seeing which of my favorite bits other people loved, which parts other than my favorites other people loved, and what others saw in my writing that I totally missed. Like, all the Dawn bits? Loved those. Wanted more of them, but girlfriend was at school and I wanted to focus on Buffy and Spike being together and sacrifices must be made (Dawn didn't want to be around for them being mushy, anyway).

Also, I totally wrote Buffy telling Giles Spike was back and to give his description to the girls so that her vengeance could be righteous, but I also forgot about it a bit in putting all the other pieces together? My brain is a sieve? So thank you for pointing that back out! And I perhaps enjoyed giving Angel the hard cut off the most out of all I wrote for this. In the same way that the cookie conversation in "How to Eat" was one of my favorite bits, putting in fake legalese to shut. him. down. was so fun!

I just... of course Spike knew that she loved him when she said that! He knew her better than she knew herself in those last seasons! But he's got to save the girl, no matter what! Til the end of the world! Even if it's tonight! (Sobs.) (Please keeping sending me those you're gonna be famous vibes. I just need them. heartheartheart)

I am glad you enjoyed the lovemaking and bonding descriptions. This bodes well for other, slightly smuttier projects I'm working on...

Big Joe! Yes! If there's more to this series ever, it's probably going to come out of that/involve more of the boxing gym. Because there's so much potential there. Especially in Spike joining all the boxers watching Buffy whoop ass and just glowing with "that's my wife. That is my wife. Look at my wife. Isn't she the most amazing thing ever? I get to snuggle that Valkyrie. Damn, I'm lucky. I know, I hate myself a little too."

And I just love them being so domestic.

I also love your gushing! Thank you for the gushiness! I needed it!

XOXOXO

Love the domestic bliss. Of course it needed to be the skull ring

oh and ‘take that angel’

Author's Response on January 01, 2020 01:39pm

I do not want to say that my entire ethos as a Spuffy fic writer can be boiled down to "take that, Angel" . . . but it wouldn't be an incorrect thing to say. (And your comment made me think that the most "take that" thing out there is the family Christmas card with photos, and Buffy doesn't send one to Angel because she wants nothing to do with him and Spike doesn't send one because he's too busy being wrapped up in Buffy, but Dawn, who went from never liking Angel to outright hating him, sneakily and anonymously sends a Christmas card of Buffy and Spike every year and dreams happily of the gnashing of teeth he must do on receipt of the cards.)

I'm so glad you loved this! Thanks for your comment!

i love spuffy  so much. I did not mean any disrespect with the angel comment it just reminded me of a comment made at a con by James. When the spuffy pairing is liked

I did not take your comment as being disrespectful. No worries, Fluffy! I super enjoyed your "take that, Angel" because I love sticking it to the Great Forehead. I'm sorry if my response made up think I was hurt; I loved your comment.

This was a lovely story filled with great moments of sweetness and joy.

It was great how they could talk about Spike not telling her that he was back, they needed to do that to stop any anger or resentment.

The meeting with Dawn and what happened seemed very fitting. It was also goid to see the reunion with Xander and Willow. I also enjoyed how the Angel situation was dealt with.

Some good advice from Buffy to the other Slayers, that they need to live in the world so they could want to save it.

I loved how Buffy had this idea on how she and Spike would watch football together, but reality didn't agree with her fantasy. This story had so many good moments and I loved how the cooking was always mentioned in one form or another.

Author's Response on January 03, 2020 06:51pm

I'm so glad you enjoyed this, Magnus!

And yes, I knew that after the first fic in this series the first thing they needed to do (after the very necessary love making) was to discuss how they've been apart for the past year, and I wanted to show the growth Buffy's had during that time that they could have that conversation without it turning into a bloodbath. I'm glad the way I did that resonated with you.

I am so glad you loved my Dawn/Spike reunion and my Spike and Willow/Xander relationship redos. Buffy isn't the only one who's grown in the last year! (Although, Angel still has not. The jerkface.)

And I feel like most people have little fantasy daydreams about how their relationship will look and then that . . . does not happen. The football viewing was how it didn't work for Buffy, but still resulted in a lovely thing.

Also, congrats on being one of the prolific commenters of 2019! You deserve it, and I am so grateful for your comments.

the fact that he kissed with enough passion to birth a star felt like an additional, unexpected, undeserved gift just for her Yeah... bonus indeed. Buffy was always a creature of passion but none of the men in her life save for Spike ever released that part of her. Yet another reason to ship them.

I'm glad she took the revelation of how long he's been back that way. There really was no reason for anger (maybe at Angel who should have at least let her know when Spike was not physically able to do so), hurt yeah but not anger. There were lots of reasons after all and she knows them all and can guess any she doesn't.

Here is where you end and I begin. Here is where I end and you are. If I move here though, is it you touching me, or am I touching you? If you’re in me and I’m in you, do you ever really end? Do I? If I belong to you, is all of me just you? Are you all of me? If I touch you there, does any of this matter? If I caress this spot, trace that scar, breathe your name just right, can this moment last forever? When I move like that, will this moment end so a better one can begin? If I lose myself in you, will you throw away the key so I can stay lost in you?  This was just beautiful! Nice bit of metaphysical musing there.

Love Dawn's entry and the skillet (Anya would have been proud of her).  Dawn waited for Spike to dress so she could fling herself at him and tell him that she never ever, ever, ever wanted to light him on fire or see him naked again Too funny.

Buffy called Giles up, informed him of Spike’s return, told him she refused to discuss it further, and announced that he was to share Spike’s description with the girls so that if anything happened to the love of her life, she could destroy whoever who touched him with a clear conscience.  YAY!! Take that Giles.

But the one thing Buffy had taught them that no Watcher had ever thought to teach a slayer was that you have to love the world, you have to hold on to bits of joy where you can find them and live in the world, otherwise you’ll come to resent the world you have to save and that resentment will lead you directly to your grave. Yes, yes, yes! Oh what a perfect insight.

Love how Buffy handled Angel. That would drive him insane!!!  Very thorough and necessary and I love that he paled even further on reading it.

I love this domestic life together and how you describe it. It seems believable and real and lovely. They are family in every way.

YAY the ring was saved and he was properly touched by that and just where it was stashed.

I love his reunion with Willow and Xander too. The other Slayers response to them as a couple is lovely.

Spike always had the words she needed to hear, but that anyone who could put her into words as precisely as he could couldn’t be a bad poet, let alone a bloody awful one. Absolutely true! I didn't think his poems were all that bad, just a bit unpolished and at times flowery but not bad at all.

God I love this story! I smiled all the way through and it made me HAPPY. What a lovely gift to be given happiness to start the New Year, thank you. Every bit of it was enjoyable and touching and perfect. I think this is my favorite reunion story yet.

Excellent start to finish and ending with the proposal and ring was icing on this cake.

Kathleen, first off, congratulations on being the most prolific commenter of 2019! Your comments are always a delight to read, and I can totally see how you've written 200,000+ words of comments if they're all as thorough and lovely as the ones you've given me! Congrats!

It drives me batty on Buffy's behalf that she kept getting paired with guys who are all ~restrained~. (I fully believe all the fic writers who say that Riley and Buffy only had sex in missionary; it's a perfectly lovely position, but Buffy loves with her entire soul and so deserves more than one position.) Girl is gonna die young (girl did die young, twice), she deserves to have someone who loves her full throttle, pedal to the metal, no sleep 'til Brooklyn. And I love that Spike loves like that and how they set each other on fire.

I wanted, with their reunion and Spike's confession of how long he's been back, to show that Buffy truly has grown in the time they've been apart. She's had a chance to work through some of her trauma, and she no longer has to respond to everything that might provide additional hurt with sharp words and harsh fists in order to protect herself. I love that you as well as some other people have pointed out this bit, because I think it's my favorite, the fact that they're working through Spike's very real concerns with love and patience while also acknowledging how both were hurt.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the metaphysical musing! I loved it, and I had no idea whether anyone else would, so thank you!

Ugh, you are so right, Anya would have been so proud of Dawn and how she took out Spike. Pour one out for Anya; we all love you, Demon Girl.

I feel like I have the hardest time reconciling with Giles after the series is done. All of the Scoobies hurt other Scoobies, but he was the adult for the entire series. He should have done better. (And I hate that I feel like this because the first few seasons of Giles are so good! He's such a good dad! He is so tired and surrounded by teenagers and I feel that! But also!!! You don't arrange for your Slayer's daughter to be staked just because you've never liked him and you think he's distracting, especially after you've seen all she's done to help him and keep him close and after you've heard her say she needs his strength!)

The real problem with the Slayer system was that it was a bunch of Watchers left to tell Slayers what they thought slaying was like, and no Slayers to provide that mentoring. Let's fix that in the post-S7 world!

I also deeply enjoyed the pile o' legal docs for Angel. Mwahahaha.

Thank you! So glad you enjoy the little Summers-Pratt fam.

Of course the ring was saved. It had to be saved. You can't get rid of something that ugly and loved.

I love the idea of the slayers being like "all vamps are bad except for this one, let us swoon over their romance but also be like 'must be Tuesday, we caught Buffy and Spike making out in a not-actually-disused hallway.'"

Look, if anyone wrote me a poem, I would immediately start making out with them, even if they rhymed "effulgent" with "bulge in it." We should have known Cecily Underwood was a demon as soon as we saw her reject William's poem because who is not moved by someone writing poetry for them?!?!

I am so glad you loved this, Kathleen! I am so glad it made you smile and made you happy; that was my only goal with it. I hope the rest of your new year brings you as much happiness as this.

XOXO

This. Is. Priceless. And adorable. And occasionally hilarious. Every bit of it is perfectly in character for them. And ohmygawd, Dawn's pancake toppings? I'm one of those strange people who actually likes marmite, and that combination made my teeth cringe in horror.

This is a fab comment. Thank you for leaving it! Adorable and sometimes hilarious was the goal, and I am so glad I reached that.

And I had great fun thinking of what terrible thing Dawn Summers and her trash compactor tastes would put together.
