This story is really fun. All of the twists were done very well and I liked the late surprise with Sarah. That did a lot to show why so many other relationships had changed, and helped nudge Buffy to choose happiness

I love this fic so freaking much. This is my second reread, and I just had to review. I love the idea of Spuffy having a fling with a happily ever after because it all seems so realistic and on par for them. Everyone is in character in such an artful way. I can literally see all of this happening. And I adore an older Buffy. I mean, most of us that grew up watching the show are this age, so it is extremely rewarding to see Buffy in the same stage of life as us.

And I just have to say that I have a serious Domestic Spike fetish. There is no excuse for it. So getting that here really hit the spot! There are so many beyond amazing (and seriously hot) parts to this fic, but my absolute favorite is in the kitchen when Buffy hugs Spike from behind. GAH. It is exactly what I have always wanted to see, what I've always wanted Spike to be able to share with her, and holy domestic! Well done!!!! Love love love, can't wait to reread it AGAIN in the future

This is a wonderfully active fandom for a show that's been out of production for almost two decades, so I'm not surprised that you missed it. I'm glad that you found and enjoyed it. Thank you for letting me know! xoxo

I liked this story so much that I didn't want it to end. It was a very smartly told yarn up until that devastating reveal of what happened to Spike in Peru. That chapter.... raised this story to another level. But you didn't make me cry until this chapter, with these lines:

“Thank you for loving him. For falling in love the normal way. Without ever hating him for loving you. Without ever hating yourself for loving him. For giving him that.”

Buffy really has grown up.

One of the things that hit me in chapter after chapter, in spite of all the distractions of clothes and shoes and events and witty, snarky storytelling, was how underneath everything ran the constant feeling of how isolated Buffy was, how apart from her supposed friends and family she really was. One could blame her job, but it was her choice for how she had let her job take her away from everyone. Spike's observation that she was the first slayer to have friends and family, and that was her strength, became less and less true over the years as Buffy's experiences, and how they changed her character, isolated her from everyone. But she finally has that mid-life reckoning, precipitated by learning about what happened to Spike. And she finally makes the right choice for her and for them. Great job on this story. Can't wait to read more of your work.

Author's Response on May 02, 2020 06:45pm

Yeah, she was at sea but, to be fair, she probably had a fair amount of PTSD by the destruction of Sunnydale.

So happy you enjoyed this. I know that post-series isn’t for everyone but Buffy had fought her way to the tender age of 22 when we last saw her staring into the crater and speaking the last word we ever heard her speak: Spike. I was pretty much midway between Buffy’s and Joyce’s ages when the show originally aired and I’m now in my early 50s. Knowing how much better my life had gotten since high school and even college, I feel compelled to give Buffy the adult life that Spike burned up to give her - out there, free of the Sunnydale Hellmouth. So gratified to know that others enjoy seeing it too.

Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to provide such thoughtful comments! xo

This was a wonderful chapter! I noted all the breadcrumbs you dropped in previous chapters, but didn't figure out what had happened, beyond a sense that there was some grief in him that he was hiding. What happened was so sad. I loved all the things they said to each other.

That burning out feeling Buffy has is something that happens to a lot of people at her age, a time of taking stock of what you've done with your life up to that point, and feeling like you need to make changes. Even if you aren't the oldest slayer who has just had her heart wrenched apart by jealousy and compassion for the man you finally realize you love. Your words were brilliant. Everything you had Spike say...just so on the nose for his character. hearts

Also loved the symbolism of the nickname he gave Sarah: Luna, for moon. Moonlight is the sun's reflection, and Buffy is his sun. So glad that she's finally grown up enough to be there for him this time.

I like how you incorporated current technology into this story. I love the idea of Willow crowdsourcing with covens worldwide, but then she would, being not only a witch but also very tech savvy. It's amazing how much has changed in 20 years wrt technology.

Okay, do you live in the SF Bay Area? Cuz you know about Triple Voodoo, which afaik, you can get only at their taproom. Like every other bar, it's closed for Covid, but you can still take out, which I will do as soon as I drink up my current stash. How is Spike able to have some at his house in the Central Coast? Does he make beer runs to SF?

I love how you have S&B relating to each other in this story. The connection, the sweetness is wonderful. And the droll humor tickles me:

"Two days ago, I was a mysterious hero with a dark past living in a cool bachelor pad. Today, I am the old lady who lived in a shoe.”

Author's Response on May 01, 2020 09:50pm

My best friend lives in Redwood City so I’ve been fortunate to spend a fair amount of time in that part of the world. How would Spike get his hands on it? Good question, but I imagine charm has a lot to do with it. He’s managed to get his hands on all manner of things over the years, including Buffy. ;-)

Thanks again for reading and being so generous with your comments. In my head canon he’s the better communicator and also the more natural nurturer in the relationship but I acknowledge that we each perceive these ideas differently. For example, I’m pretty Joss would think I’m totally off in my perception. If you’re interested in seeing if Buffy gets any better once their established, there is a second installment to the series, La Bella Famiglia. Thanks again and Happy New Year!

Feeling hopeful that Buffy wanted to talk. Still really needs to let Spike know what he's meant to her, like really. She needs to give him the benefit of letting him know she's really seen him. He's felt so neglected over the years.

Author's Response on January 02, 2020 01:29am

I’m not so sure that he felt neglected, exactly. Always wanted her but once he has a soul, particularly once he’s back and has his legs under him better, his world gets bigger. He’s driven by more than his desires. That’s my head canon for why he stays away at first and also why he tells Andrew not to tell her he’s back. Paradoxically, his soul makes it no longer just about her, which is good because who the heck can bear the burden of being another person’s reason for everything. It’s too much because if you falter, they do (my head canon for the fiasco of S6).

Author's Response on January 01, 2020 05:18pm

In her defense, she probably has ptsd from her adolescence and everyone’s response to her obvious severe depression following the S5 unimaginable trauma (on top of the more imaginable trauma of losing her mother) in S6 was to tell her to snap out of it so maybe a little  dissociating might be understandable.

Ok, season 8 of the comics is hard to get through because the plot jumps a lot, but it has a lot of necessary background info, and I, too, abhorred the thought of those space bugs, but I'll be damned if I didn't absolutely fall in love with them, and I am not alone, especially among Spike lovers. They're absolutely lovely.

I love your writing, btw, just enjoying the hell out of this. I love them together, and I love his grace with her. I wish she would let herself have him, just let herself be happy and gratefully take what he gives her and give him back herself. It's all he wants, and she discounts herself too much.

I can't stop thinking of how he simply and powerfully told her he was happy to see her and have her with him. She could learn so much from that comment.
