Joyce!! Oh, hopeful Joyce!! My heart. I didn't want to cry anymore at your hand, Passion4Spike, but here I am bawling. Joyce knew that Spuffy were soulmates and I'll scream it until the day I die. And you made it happen so wonderfully. I loved all of this. Every last words of it. I loved Buffy on the back of that bike feeling alive again. I loved Spike buying her pie and 'agreeing' to have 'one good day' in a year.

I also want to thank you for giving Buffy/Dawn such a normal sister relationship here. Talking about boys and sex and french fries and sex ... that felt amazing to read. It makes me wanna call my sisters up and gab my head off. I don't know what convos like this were so hard for them on the show. Didn't have to be and you illustrated that so well.

Now my head is just aching like crazy to read this road trip to see the aunt and cousins. I can picture them renting an RV so Spike doesn't go crispy and because Dawn begs them to because she kinda enjoyed running from the Knights of Byzantium in a Winnebago. I could see them arguing about fast food and where to stay for the night and what to stop and see and what not to stop and see. I'm officially rooting for this fanfiction.

:)

Thanks for sharing your incredible gift with us all. We're totally not worthy. <3

Author's Response on June 22, 2021 12:20pm

Aw, yay for more crying! You know I love to make you cry! (And smile while you're doing it, at least by the end!).  Yeah, I don't know why exactly they had to make Dawn so ... well, annoying. I found her annoying most of the time. I know some people didn't, but I did. And I get that a lot of it can be explained (since Monks, who were never teenage girls) created her, they must've just used some really annoying person to model her after! LOL!  Anyway, I was happy to let them be actual sisters and act like that in here, and yes, hopeful Joyce! Just a giving these two crazy kids a little nudge in the right direction. Just when they needed it most.

Oh man, your ideas for the road trip sound so fun! I may have to revisit that one of these days! Maybe another challenge month or something. So many wonderful stories just needing to be written!

Thanks so much, Chelle! I appreciate your kind words so very much! Can't even tell you!

Author's Response on March 18, 2021 10:30pm

Yes, it was terrible that no one, especially Buffy, could see how much Spike could love. She was so scarred by Angel/Angelus and brain-washed by the Council, she couldn't believe he could love for a long time. I think at the end of season 5 she was starting to see the real him and accept that he could truly care, and then she died and all that had been gained was lost because she was in too dark a place to see his goodness.

Thank goodness that stories like this can fix that!

I'm glad you've enjoyed this story. Thank you so much for reading. I love hearing from you.

so very full of meaning - i loved how the tentative steps both buffy and spike took. and i had a feeling it was joyce as hope. i actually felt tears as joyce yearned to be with her daughters and spike as they truly took steps toward truly being a family.

i think i need to re-read it ...

i love your stories!

This is one of my favorite short stories, inspired by that banner by pfeifferpack, I saw it and the idea just wouldn't leave me alone, had to write it out. Love it when that happens -- when it just flows so easily.

What a great conclusion. Dawn and Buffy doing the sister thing really got me. That really felt like a genuine sister interaction - as a person with a close sister it hit close to home. I loved the Joyce twist! It was such a satisfying twist, and I felt so good for Joyce that she got one last interaction with each of her daughters. I loved this whole fic! Thank you for writing this fun piece! flowers

Author's Response on February 12, 2019 06:26pm

I really love Joyce, of course, and I liked the idea of her somehow talking the PTB into letting her come back to help her daughter (and Spike, for that matter). I wanted to get Doyle into the story too, just because I rarely get to write him and I really liked him on Angel the Series.

Glad the Buffy/Dawn dynamic felt right. Dawn in canon pretty much annoyed me, but with a few tweaks she can be a great character.

Thanks so much for reading and stopping in on each chapter! I really appreciate it so much! So glad you enjoyed it!! I had a lot of fun writing it.

Wow wow wow. What a perfect ride. Dawn and Spike's relationship is so achingly real. That whole section just got me right in the heart. Then the sex! Oh my god, that was well-written sex. The metaphors worked so well - especially the lightning bug section. You also managed to traverse so much emotional ground here, and the sex is a great vehicle for that development. I also loved that Spike wanted to take care of Buffy first - that's so him. Excellent!

Author's Response on February 12, 2019 06:22pm

I really like Dawn and Spike's relationship. Love her using her stubbronness to stick up for him and defend him from Xander's idiocy, as well as encourage Buffy to give Spike a real chance.

Of course, had to get one sex scene in here -- it is season 6 spuffy, after all. I enjoyed making their first time be gentle and caring rather than the 'bring the house down' rampage of canon. Not that that wasn't hot, but, as you say, this touched more emotional ground for both of them.

And, yes, Spike would absolutely want to make sure he took care of his lady first. That is just so Spike!

And I love metaphors!  devil

Thanks again! So glad you enjoyed it!

Author's Response on February 12, 2019 06:16pm

I can't even imagine how much Buffy must be hurting after her ordeal of being yanked out of heaven, but I tried to capture at least part of what I think she could be feeling. And, despite everything, she knows that Spike would be the only one she could trust with her dark feelings and also the only one who might actually love her enough to let her go if she couldn't take another day.

This chapter transported me. I really felt the freedom that Buffy gets on that motorcycle. I love that Buffy is really moving through her emotions here - she gets to be confused and change her mind. Both Buffy and Spike are being at turns tender and necessarily harsh with each other, and that dynamic works so well and definitely reflects the canon.

Author's Response on February 12, 2019 06:12pm

I'm so glad you enjoyed it and it could transport you out onto the freedom of the highway. That was what drew my muse to the banner and really inspired the story, just thinking how wonderful that would feel to Buffy after all she'd been through. They have both always gone back and forth with each other, like constantly feeling the other out -- it's their dance, right?

so glad you liked it! I really appreciate you reading and stopping in! thanks so much!

I know you don’t understand...  We don’t have to understand each other’s choices, Xander, we just have to respect them. Buffy has found her backbone! This calls for a celebration. party

At least two. More dates … more Buffy … more Buffy kisses. LOL. I think Spike's brain might have melted. He is not used to his plans working out quite this well.

Anya honestly doesn’t care, but she’ll be on Xander’s side, of course  Perhaps, but I wouldn't totally count on it.

I love that Buffy seems to have decisively made up her mind here. They will have much less trouble from her friends if she herself doesn't view their relationship as something she needs to be ashamed of.

‘Need’ is like … oxygen or water or … coffee,  Perfect definition! biggrin

Yeah, exactly! Apart from a couple of small mentions of it, it was never really pushed and Xander never called on his hypocrisy! Grrrrr! I mean, I loved Anya, have lots of fun with her character in fanfic, but honestly, Xander ... get your head out of your ass!

the three of them now stood together facing Xander, a united front. heartsIt's the little things like this that make me smile. Buffy hasn't said much, but she is still standing with Spike. She didn't push him away at the first sign of Xander opposition.

Her not jumping up, kicking Spike out or running off is huge for her in this moment.

haha! So true!

Perhaps, but I wouldn't totally count on it.

yes, when I put that in, I thought -- hmm, not always. Anya didn't have a problem speaking her mind and disagreeing with Xander, but Buffy probably thought she would be.

I love that Buffy seems to have decisively made up her mind here. They will have much less trouble from her friends if she herself doesn't view their relationship as something she needs to be ashamed of.

So very true! How she sees it will have a huge impact on the others, on how they view it. And if they finally realize that they can't bully Buffy into their idea of what she should be (Xander mostly), then it should take that power away that she's always given them.

If my suspicions of who Hope the waitress is are correct, then I would venture to say that no, she (Hope) really wouldn't want to spend a great deal of time contemplating this particular scenario.  Not that she would be displeased that it was happening, just that there are certain things as a parent that you would prefer not to think about!

Exactly! There was a story I ready recently where Buffy got antidepressants, and I'm not sure how much that would work for her? I mean ... maybe it would help, but would it really just be masking the underlying problems and letting her continue to not deal with them? IDK ... clearly, none of us have had this particular depression to deal with. But she can talk to Spike about it, if no one else, which has to help.

Buffy and Spike's encounter in the abandoned house was all about breaking down and desperation. What you are giving us here is based upon building up and hope.

I really wanted to do that, to change their 'beginning' into something hopeful rather than destructive.

There was a story I ready recently where Buffy got antidepressants, and I'm not sure how much that would work for her? I mean ... maybe it would help, but would it really just be masking the underlying problems and letting her continue to not deal with them? I've wondered about that with stories I have read in the past. Whatever is going on with Buffy after her resurrection is on a near spiritual level, it's not organic depression. Antidepressants work by correcting faulty brain chemistry. I really don't know how much help that would be in her situation. Working through it with someone that is willing to listen and support however she needs to be supported is most likely her only viable option.

Author's Response on January 03, 2019 03:27pm

Yeah, that was my thought, too. I mean, of course, everyone has different ideas, so ...  Personally, I like her letting Spike help her through it in a healthy, non-destructive way.

“Closed November 4th – 9th due to death in family,” she read on the hand-written sign taped to the door. “That’s impossible. They were just open three hours ago … and today’s the seventh.”  LOL. Am I the only one that reads this and hears Twilight Zone music playing softly in the background?

Guess not. biggrin the closed diner had fully confirmed the Twilight-Zone-ness of their stop on the way up the mountain. Your stuff is always so much fun to comment on while I read. I love the way your mind works.

Also, I should eat the damn pie.biggrin Buffy is becoming the teensiest bit obsessed here. Perhaps I was wrong on the Twilight Zone vibe. I am starting to sense shades of Twin Peaks...

She was re-bundled in flannel PJs instead of leather, with fluffy, sleepy lambs printed on them, head to toe Now that's a very good sign. Buffy is willing to be totally comfy and relaxed around him. I wonder if she left her stake in her room?thinking

Her expression changed from apologetic to feral, like a long-caged, wild animal finally given permission to run free. That would be a very apt description, I should think. Can you imagine how Riley would have reacted if Buffy had bit him hard enough to draw blood?biggrin

Because I’m a monster?... “No.” ... “Because I am.” Ouch, yet at the same time, another breakthrough. Buffy is not trying to hide from her inner demons by refusing to see Spike. She sees herself as the problem. Loving him and being loved by him is not wrong in her mind, just impossible.

Do you love me enough to let me go? Spike said he could take anything that she could dish out, but this? This is asking too much. Not just to stand by and let it happen, but to be the instrument of her death? She has to know he'd never survive it.

One Year...You agreed t’ let me help.  Okay, I can breathe again. A year with Spike would make anyone want to live again!

Hmmm ... good question. Well, at this point they don't know he can hit her or hurt her without the chip firing, so maybe not quite as trusting as it may seem?

That would be a very apt description, I should think. Can you imagine how Riley would have reacted if Buffy had bit him hard enough to draw blood?

OMG ... his manhood would've been challenged; he probably would've shriveled up like a prune.

Ouch, yet at the same time, another breakthrough. Buffy is not trying to hide from her inner demons by refusing to see Spike. She sees herself as the problem. Loving him and being loved by him is not wrong in her mind, just impossible.

Clearly some of the things Hope said are getting to her, but she's still pulling away.

Spike said he could take anything that she could dish out, but this? This is asking too much. Not just to stand by and let it happen, but to be the instrument of her death? She has to know he'd never survive it.

She'd have to know that, and yet she's still asking ... too much, for sure. Not even his promise to protect Dawn would keep him in this world if he had to do this for her.

Okay, I can breathe again. A year with Spike would make anyone want to live again!

haha! No doubt about that! devil

Thanks so much for reading and always stopping in! Love hearing from you!
