I know this is tagged as "cheating/infidelty" and yet it doesn't seem that way to me. Any bonds of loyalty Buffy has with Brian here are faint enough they don't really register. Legal ones, perhaps. Not the emotional ones where it counts.
I love a good older Buffy, especially when she goes after what she most wants. A nice, solid little story here.[Report This]
I hated what Joss did with Spuffy at the end of S12. And I felt really sad reading the first part of this and how Joss's S12 decisions played out...
Buffy and Spike's reunion was inevitable and beautiful and sad. And happy/sad at the end, if you know what I mean. Sad as Buffy's aging brings about the inevitability of their eventual separation one way or another. There was in edge of melancholy running through the whole fic. This is a really different fic and I really liked it.[Report This]
This was lovely! So very different from your other contribution, and not at all what I expected, but it was very well written. I'm glad Buffy and Spike got their happily ever. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I really enjoyed doing a couple of different things with the challenge - think I'm now in love with one-shots :)
Infidelity's not usually my thing, but you approached this with elegant complexity and your usual gorgeously layered prose, and it was *marvelous*. A beautiful continuation of the Spuffy love story with emotional growth, struggle, and a perfectly symbolic final coming together. Thank you for this!
I know it's about infidelity, but that's not really what it's about, if you get me.
And this review- eek, so lovely. You made my horrible day at work much better when I read this, so thank you! It was a difficult one to write, I had to keep cutting things out. But I'm quite pleased with the result, and I'm so glad you liked it.
Spike ran a hand through his hair. “Well, fuck.”
“I- all right. Yes.”
Now you're to the point, Buffy? NOW, after everything? Bloody hell!
(It is genuinely a cracking bit of dialogue, if a bit late in coming.)
Oh, god! The bit about the baby :(
*reads some more*
This fic has me all twisted up!
It's not really my usual thing, either, but I like it anyways.
Very well written. Totally believable. Thanks for sharing!
Haha, it is very straight shooting, isn't it?! Maybe older Buffy has finally learned to just go for what she wants!
I'm glad you read and liked, even if it isn't your usual thing :)
Hahaha that you did. I can imagine all the times she accidentally used Slayer strength tho. "Honey, you're breaking the tiny human again"
I think Slayer strength would have to be reserved for opening jars only ;)
Absolutely beautiful. Ten years sure is a long time to spend on someone you're not ecstatic about. Buffy drifted through it I guess.
I think sometimes how something is at the end can colour your perception of the whole relationship. Particularly if life throws you a couple of curve balls during it. And if you decide you want to move on... It's only natural you don't remember all the good stuff. I like to think she had a good marriage for a few years, before life got in the way and she realised that Spike was the one...
Stupid Buffy marrying someone that is not Spike.
‘Till death us do part.’
And here he was, death, ready and waiting to finally part her from her husband.
That line is so good.
Spike comforting Buffy always give me warm fuzzy feelings. So sad that she lost a baby, but worse that she has been made to feel guilty for it.
“You love it, Mrs Robinson.” haha poor Buffy
147 days – of course it was! And a lovely happy ending for both of them.
Great little fic – not nearly as dark and depressing as I thought it would be from all your warnings!
Everyone is saying that, so you know what, I removed them! The warnings, that is.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it - it's a long road but they are finally here they should be :)
This is so like Buffy. Abandoning Spike to try married NORMAL live and beeing bored by it. Poor Brian (Riley N 2). Happy Spuffy in he end
loved it, well done
Thanks Spuffy forever! Yes, I think it's safe to say she's finally realised what she wants. Better late than never!
It's weird but the infidelity felt more like her ten-year detour with Brian. She and Spike belong together and Brian was a typical Buffy running from what her heart knew she wanted and needed.
I can see Spike backing away, allowing her to have the life she thinks she wants (yet keeping in touch this time even if only brief emails).
I love their meeting again and the irresistible pull. Anyone would have to see how impossible it would be to think of parting them forever.
I can understand why he expected her to go back to Brian and tell herself that the mistake had been the tryst with Spike.
Love her choosing the 147th day for symbolic reasons. She is resuming her REAL life, her life with him. She is coming back to life with him at her side only without her issues from the last time. It's romantic and Spike could tell it.
I love how happily shocked he was to find her at his door, bag in hand.
This really hit the button with the prompt too. No matter what, they are meant to be.
Thanks so much Kathleen, you always leave the loveliest reviews! I'm glad that you saw what I was trying to do, and that you think it had a romantic ending!
Always go mad if that's the result, I just want to roll my tongue around the taste of it 💜
I don't know if this is a second review for me, or if you've posted in the wrong place! Either way it's s lovely comment ;)
I enjoyed this story! I don’t really mind the premise - the end of a relationship is often messy, but thought it might be a bit depressing. However, I like the idea that even if Buffy and Spike go their own ways, they’ll eventually find their way back to each other. It was hopeful rather than depressing - and your writing is great.
I'm so glad you thought it was positive. I did too! Sometimes it can take a while to figure out what you want, and I wanted a happy ending for them eventually. Now the whole husband and family option is closed to Buffy I think she's free to really give her all with spike. Well, that's my interpretation anyway!
I really like how real this feels. You capture the death of a marriage and how sometimes people are haunted by the one that got away. Life can just be about timing when it comes to passion and relationships.
Thanks Fraggleshaw. I know fanfic is all about wish fulfilment and 'fixes' but I did enjoy writing a more 'real' and 'adult' story for these two.
Relationships are complicated and messy things, particularly when life gets in the way. I'm glad you enjoyed my attempt to show a few facets of this one :)
Not my favourite topic and setting, but you did well with this. You captured their struggle and the problems that life brings and considering the flawed world of the comics it could very well develop like that.
Thanks Magnus. I know I've pretty much included all your least favourite things in this fic, so thanks for reading and commenting! Pleased you think that is is plausible for the comics.
You have amazing talent. No, the subject matter is not something I am comfortable with (and the story did leave me profoundly disappointed in Buffy as a human being) but your writing is real, raw, and honest. I am very much looking forward to reading more from you in the future.
This is just the loveliest thing for you to say. Thank you so much. Work things have knocked me a little over the past few months, and so having someone say I have a talent at writing means a lot. I certainly intended to continue to write ( both here and original fiction) :)
If you have your original fiction out anywhere for public consumption, I would love to read it. I love watching the transition of truly talented writers from fan fiction to original works. I have a friend that I beta'ed for through two different fandoms that has just published her first novel, and it has been so much fun to watch her writing evolve and grow.
Nothing out there yet, but two manuscripts I'm tinkering with and a couple of others plotted out waiting to be started. If I get the courage to submit them or self publish them I'll let you all know on here, believe me! Thank you so much for the kind words and support, it means a lot.
I don't know why people would dislike this. I think it's wonderful!
Thank you so much Braxen!
I guess I was nervous because it's a combo of infidelity, an aging Buffy and Spike not, perhaps, 'standing up' for himself in the way that some people on here like so much that made me nervous.
I'm glad that my fears were unfounded :)
They just feel grown up and real. :)
Not my favorite premise, but I trust you and love your writing...and once again you've gifted us with a gem of a story.
I really liked how you structured the story - The little snippets of dialogue were understated but revealed a complex history and deep emotions.
I'm so pleased you liked it! And that you liked the structure with the little 'snippets'. Thanks so much for reading and commenting :)
