Love it - Spike + baby scenes are so good. And I'm always a sucker for details of place, so the story feels real and is like a mini-travelogue. And your inclusion of Liz and Gershwin made me go back and look at that photo in "Ketchup and the Crocodile" of the real-life inspiration for Gershwin (and Ketchup). hearts

Very fun story.  Spike was right to be defensive when everyone said he was babysitting. He is the parent.

Author's Response on November 21, 2018 09:32pm

He is the parent! There's a meme that's going around in my mom groups about dads saying they're babysitting and moms being indignant that being a parent is not babysitting. lol So, I flipped it here and made Spike indignant that he's relegated to "babysitting." He takes his dad job very seriously. Heh. Thank you so much for reading! It was super fun to tell a story from Spike's POV and his view about becoming a dad and what it means to raise a child in their world. hug

I loved the entire progression of this, from Spike trying (and mostly succeeding) to get home and get everything fixed before Buffy arrives (his shower with Asher was adorable) to the mutual realization of "things went down", which was absolutely like this:

And most of all, I loved how Spuffy was able to (mostly calmly) talk through Spike's mis-adventures. And, of course, reaffirm their love and togetherness with some delightfully hot sex.

Also, I giggled so hard at this: "She dropped his hand and reached back, forcefully pinching his thigh. “Ow! You wanting to start this now? ‘Cause I can go again.” Oh, our vampire, who will happily regard teasing pain as foreplay...

This was such a wonderful end to an absolutely wonderful story, Sandy!! Congratulations on finishing!!! partyhugheart

Author's Response on November 04, 2018 08:57pm

Spike made a valiant effort to make things seem normal and then realized who the heck was he trying to fool? And did he even want to? Not really. lol Not anymore. And haha... love that cartoon! It's perfect.

They did talk through it. A lot of people said Spike was going to be in big trouble but I didn't think it fit the Spuffy in Small Boat. They're established and loving and there is so much trust there. And Spike honestly didn't set out for things to go so poorly.

He would so totally go again and see it as foreplay! lol

Also, I had two endings to the story...well, two kitty names. I thought about including your sweet kitty as part of the name because the name meaning is totally perfect with the themes in the story, but I also didn't want to make you sad. So there was that ending...

Snowball was always going to be the first name though because Spike is sentimental like that.

Anyway, thank you so so much for reading! Sorry your RL is so busy! *hugs* I hope your next week is easier! hugheartsheart

I of course enjoyed how Spike tried to rush home and make everything in order. The little showering with Asher was sweet.

The truth had to come out and Spike had a story to tell. Buffy had one of her own, I liked the idea of them getting Drusilla's blessing.

This was a mostly nice story, really enjoyable.

Author's Response on November 04, 2018 08:46pm

He did try to make everything seem normal and then just realized it was all for naught. lol It wouldn't have worked after everything that happened and he wouldn't want to keep secrets from Buffy anyway. Glad you enjoyed the story and Dru's blessing. I like that it gave her a little closure as well! *hugs* Thanks for reading, Magnus!

I love this! In spite of Spike's insecurities, there is nothing to fear from Buffy now. The days of fists to the nose are in the past as is the rush to judgment. Now she listens first... they communicate!

Love his rush to get home and make everything as normal as possible before Buffy gets home. She would have had questions about his injuries so his goose was cooked regardless but he made a gallant effort.

Love his showering with Ash. Wonderful daddy/son moments there. Love that it's a fairly common event. Great bonding there. He's going to be a pretty well-adjusted child IMHO. Certainly he'll know he has that foundation of love that is vital.

I'm so glad that they aren't holding back with one another. They are true partners.

Cute that Spike went for the cute name for the kitten while Buffy was going for the rough and tough.

Dru giving her blessing made sense really. As far as she is able she does love Spike and wants him happy.

Excellent story from start to end.

Author's Response on November 04, 2018 08:51pm

Awww...thank you, Kathleen!

There really isn't anything to fear from Buffy now. He sometimes forgets...ha. Old habits and all. I thought about how to end this fic and lots of people kept saying Spike was going to be in big trouble, but that didn't really fit with the couple from Small Boat, so instead, she reacted this way!

He did make a gallant effort! lol

He's a really great daddy...Asher is loved by both of them so much! And I really wanted this fic to show just how Spike would be as a dad. And also to show that being a new dad has a learning curve. Haha. Poor guy.

Spike was being sentimental...the tender heart that he has. lol I actually had two drafts of the end...with different names.

I wanted Dru to have her closure. She really didn't get it in AtS or BtVS. I know people don't always get closure but it's fanfic, right?

Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed the story! Thanks so much for reading! I always look so forward to your thoughts! hugheartsheartflowers

Ah, what a treat!  I hadn;t realized how long ago EC2 was until buzwuzz recced it this week.  A lot has happened.  Thank you for fulfilling my desperate need for Spike to take a baby to demon poker night!!

Gershwin would never do that.

How little Spike knows about poodles!

Aww, I love that Dru is taking care of her darling boy, in her own way. And that Spike frantically tries to conceal everything, but then can't help but just tell the whole story. And also that Buffy was able to restrain herself during the account of the evening.

Also, I love that Spike's so capable with Asher -- the shower and the changing and the popping in of the pacifier.

What a good vampire dad!

HAHA...I know little about poodles so Spike does, too. I love hearing about what she would do. lol Your baby has so much character!

Dru is taking care of Spike. She's finally at the point that while she can't have him, she wants him to be well taken care of.

Buffy would have been much angrier if Asher had been at all hurt!

And Spike is totally a good and doting father! You do what you have to do! James, on the other hand, totally not cooperative in the shower and wails his head off (from personal experience trying to bathe my son in a hotel shower). lol

"she held up an iPhone that she’d produced from god knew where" - Hee! I too dearly loved this section. The technology age truly gets to everybody biggrin

Thanks for carrying me, Clem! What a sweetheart. And *of course* I wasn't about to let a demon eat the poor defenseless kitten! You can bet he'll be getting some house visits vamp

Spike squatted and pulled a credit card out of his boot where he sometimes stowed it. He didn’t prefer to carry a wallet. - Hah! Something tells me that Buffy is the one to pay at restaurants so that Spike doesn't have to dig around in his shoes during a date haha Also, I learned that there are different emergency doors from you! Hah, the places fanfic takes us...

He realized that Dru must have changed the baby and done a decent job at it. - awww hug I can definitely see Dru doing that. She really seems to love Asher in her way, and she's always been a nurturer at heart (no matter how twisted her actions sometimes get in her madness and vampirism)

More like a whole lot of vampires, some Slayers, a werewolf, some witches, and a poodle. - The poodle is *especially* dangerous biggrin

"one couple was swaying and drunkenly singing “Dancing Queen” complete with attempts at synchronized kicks to the beat of the song. " - That's hysterical. Personal experience?

LOVED this chapter so much! I'm so sorry I'm so behind in reviewing, dearest Sandy. Excited for the final chapter! heartheart

Author's Response on October 29, 2018 10:10pm

She is totally savvy now!! I'm amused that she must pay the bill somehow.

Aww...I thought you might like Clem carrying you! And you couldn't let Clem's kitty be eaten! I'm definitely picturing you, Liz, Emily, and Gershwin dropping in unannounced for inspections.

LOL...Spike is totally a romantic on a date so carries some cash. The card is just for emergencies. innocent Though Buffy may have to pay the remainder if he doesn't have quite enough. It's hard to predict how much will be needed. biggrin

I actually just realized Asher needed changing in the story so decided Dru must have done it.

Oh yeah! The poodle is not to be underestimated!

Well, nope on the personal experience! Haha. But it seemed like something that has happened on Bourbon.

Yay! I'm glad you liked your chapter! hugheartsheart Thank you so much for reading! Sorry it took me so long to reply! I feel like the last week has been discombobulated!

I love this chapter — I especially love Katie’s threat of demon home inspections. Do not mess with kitten welfare on Katie’s turf!  And of course, a demon-fighting poodle is a happy and fulfilled poodle.  If only I could offer Gershwin such a job!

Dru: "Aren't you a nummy, nummy little boy -- oooo.  Oooo, no no no.  Yuck."

Author's Response on October 29, 2018 09:48pm

HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! The diaper change addition! So true... I can totally imagine her holding up the diaper between thumb and forefinger and handing it to the closest minion to dispose of. (I actually realized that Asher hadn't been changed in a while and thought it would be funny to have Dru do it.)

Well, Liz and Katie and Emily will be swinging by for unplanned kitten welfare checks. And they'll probably let the poodle tag along!

Gershwin would totally rock at being a demon-fighting canine! Totally imagining Liz training her, too!

"The big one who’d drugged him was corralling the kittens, dangling a bit of string for them to play with." - I'm sort in love with this image of a gigantic, muscly vamp just having some wholesome kitten fun times biggrin But then, he was sired by Dru, so it really makes a lot of sense. She's always had such a good eye for the emotionally kind.

"Clem had never met Dru. It probably wouldn’t have gone well." - *snerk* You know, I never considered that fact until just now, but you're absolutely right! Poor Clem

The vampire was pretty. - HAH. You too? You and Liz are so sneaky!

"She valued connection as much as he did. Maybe she was completely adrift – all hope gone." - I know you said you haven't written Dru much, but you just wrote an incredibly beautiful (and entirely heart-wrenching) ode to Dru (and the Sprusilla relationship) with this chapter. All the complexity that is her - what makes her and breaks her. I just wanted to hug her this chapter! weephug

“Parenting is not the same as bloody babysitting. I’m his father, not a childminder!” - Haha, aww poor Spike! I can see how this would absolutely be a sore spot for our vamp.

Really tense chapter Spike use to be completely attuned to Dru. He understood her better than anyone else and knew how to communicate with her even at her worst. He's lost that ability because he's not been around her particular madness in a long while. There was no telling how this chapter was going to go!

I've always been in the camp of seeing Dru as the more innocent of innocent in all of Buffyverse. She had been destroyed long before her turning and nothing she did was anything she truly had any say in. For that reason, I always hate to see her dust but it might just be an act of kindness in the end. She does not do well and what she needs to do well is bad for everyone else.

Truthfully Angel SHOULD be the one to sort her out. He made this tragic mess then walked away.

I think Spike handled her just right here. If that's Buffy swooping in it could go very badly for Dru and her minions and plaything.

I liked your semi-lucid and terribly depressed Dru here. I think she would be just this way.

Excellent update.

I think Spike did pretty good with Dru considering...phew. lol

And me, too, about seeing Dru as innocent in a lot of ways. It's hard to fault her for anything she does.

And haha...I just had Spike totally punt the ball to Angel. He did make the mess and then left her to Spike.

Thanks so much about Dru! I re-watched Fool for Love (SUCH a chore) and Crush to help me with her characterization. She's hard for me. She definitely has her own agenda here and you'll see a bit more of that in the next chapter and hear even more in the last chapter.
