Oh, this was both heartbreaking and heartwarming, whenever Spike and Buffy managed a connection. I really wish you'd continued writing it, and just know that if you ever come back to it, I'll be happy to read more of this!

If you won't though, and are still around and feel like it, I'd love to hear where you wanted to bring the story with these poor babies. I just need to give Buffy so many hugs...

Thank you for sharing!!

Good for Giles giving Spike cover and protection so he can continue to help Buffy.

All those questions and having to relive the events are going to be hell for her. Good, she has support and also that Lindsey was sensitive enough to offer to leave. Having Cordy there was good too.

There are going to be a lot of bad days as Buffy tries to find herself again. She IS different, she will never be the person she was before this happened. Now she has to heal then decide just who she is going to let this mold her into. Having help will make it more possible for her to be not just a survivor but an overcomer. She can come out of this stronger in the end.

Great update.

Glad Kate is trying to make some important points. I really don't want Spike to lose his job over this. It would really help is he got put in official position as a guard for Buffy. Adam and Warren are still out there after all and witness protection would be a believable role for him under the circumstances and it could protect him and the case integrity too.

Glad he called for a professional to help Buffy. She won't like picking at the scabs and prodding the wounds but it will help with her trauma and her self-esteem as well. Rape victims often self-sabotage themselves after and usually keep making iffy choices until they process what happened and all the rest of the fall-out.

It will be good to have Spike in her corner (and Xander, Willow, and Dawn would be helpful too) but the trained therapist is essential.

Great update.

Giles took this better than I expected but Spike has to be careful, there are many complications. Buffy's panic attack make perfect sense with this situation.

Those questions had to be asked but her answers really made my heart hurt.

Kate has the right of it and Spike do know it. It's good to see that he make sure that she can get professional help, but her living with him can still complicate the situation in several ways.

I’m wondering if Buffy will push Spike away because of everything she’s been through. I know he has been the person she goes to but it’s hard to expect others to understand even if they are as capable as Spike of understanding. When they get closer it will be hard on buffy physically. She is stubborn and I see Spike getting hurt because she might pull away from him. She can’t depend on him forever and people will eventually tell her it’s wrong of her to depend on him as much as she is right now. Poor Buffy it’s hard talking about it’s like reliving it all over again. I’m glad Spike is there for her even when he gets mad. It’s understandable though I would be mad too. Great chapter it feels so real I love the constant updates! Thank you for the story!

Poor Buffy, Spike tries to help but it's not easy.

She's going to have nightmares in one form or another for years to come. Therapy will help them be more manageable in time and the triggers will be there but not as raw.

Poor Spike doesn't know how to really help her although some of his instincts are good. Having her verbalize that the fault was in those who raped her was a good start. Having him fully on her side is good too. She's going to be in for a lot of people saying all the wrong things. Lots of assumptions and judgments too. The legal system can be brutal. Sadly it will work in her favor that she was kept captive and brutalized instead of "just" raped. She might actually get a conviction and the benefit of the doubt. Being found bound will also "help" as will the signs of physical abuse. The world is not kind to rape survivors, she might get more compassion as a kidnap victim alone.

Good update.

With Adam and Warren on the lose Buffy should have police protection, but Spike letting her live with him could cause problems. A lawyer could probably use that.

Spike is clearly not used to buying things. Since she didn't have anything  300 dollars didn't sound that much.

Buffy will also need some therapy after all the suffering.

Spike owns about one outfit.... As well necessities for women are often more expensive than they are for men.

Therapy is key for Buffy.

We got some information on Spike's backstory, what made him become a police and his past with Dru. A good thing that Angleman talked to the police when he got suspicious.

Buffy is of course suffering from the horror she has been through. That list of injuries was awful.

A very good start. The horror of the situation is made clear without being explicit. The reaction from Buffy, the police and the neighbours all that was done well. Good use of the characters.

Is Riley's friend Forrest the one with the surname Gates? I wasn't totally sure but I think it's him.

Author's Response on April 03, 2018 02:29pm

Thank you so much! The story does become more explicit when necessary but I hope that you find it to be bearable enough to get through.

I think this question may have already been answered for you in the story, but yes, it is Forrest Gates.

There's not a version of Ben I've seen or read that I like, but this one takes the cake. He practically brags about restraining and drugging a torture/rape victim, dismisses her very valid agitation, gets angry with the person who points out her agitation and his dismissal, then proceeded to aggressively force himself into her knickers (I don't care if it was an exam, it was still force). He should have been fired on the spot, and if he wasn't Buffy could own that hospital. I'm sorry for the rant, I care for the elderly and disabled and abuses like this set me off. I've seen too many lives ruined and recoveries set back because of wankers like the one you wrote here. I really do love the story, just not Ben.

Author's Response on April 03, 2018 02:05pm

Straight up, Ben is an idiot in this. I think the main problem with him is that he is ignorant. He is so obviously unaware of Buffy's condition and effects that rape can have on a person. He approached the situation like he would any other patient which was obviously a stupid thing to do. The way that he barges into the room and acts in a very casual manner implies that he is very inexperienced and probably not qualified to be examining her.

Ben wouldn't have thought that he was bragging about drugging her, but you are right that it is probably how it sounded to Buffy. He did, however, force Buffy's underwear off her. I completely agree.

Don't be sorry! Rape is an issue that warrants ranting! Rant until you can rant no more!

Thank you for your review and I hope you continue to enjoy the story.

I’m here wondering if Kate has a thing for Spike or she’s just being protective because it could get Spike in trouble. I believe Spike is headed in to trouble already. He has done everything to comfort her that would put his job at risk. His feelings will keep growing as long as he is around Buffy. Poor Buffy the treatment from Ben it’s true some people don’t care about rape victims. Some rape victims get treated like it was their fault. Glad to see Spike isn’t treating her that way. He has a kind heart to offer his home. Him holding her and comforting her will be his down fall. It’s good for Buffy she needs someone like Spike. I wonder what’s going to happen with them.. Buffy still needs to seek help someone to talk too. She’s homeless and needs a job so she can support herself also hopefully Dawn. I wonder when Willow and Xander will make an appearance. Great story can’t wait for the next chapter or I hope more than one!

Author's Response on April 03, 2018 01:48pm

Thank you so much for your review!

Kate's motives and feelings will be explored more as the story goes on. She and Spike have been partners for a while, so there are different reasons that could explain her reactions.

Spike has already broken some rules and if he isn't careful, he may just break so more. He is a good person and it's important to remember that he has already dedicate three years of his life to finding Buffy, he would do anything to keep her safe and happy. There is also the fact that he feels guilty for not finding her sooner. These things are strong motivators when it comes to Spike's decision making and his interactions with Buffy.

Ben's treatment of Buffy is unacceptable and although it will not be handled on page, I promise that he will be dealing with consequences. Spike will make sure of it if nothing else. Rape survivors deserve much better treatment, this was just my way of showing how harsh people can be in society.

Buffy needs help! This will definately be dealt with in the near future. Dawn, Willow and Xander will be working their way back into Buffy's life, I promise.

Dangerous territory for Spike. She's too fragile for a relationship. The temptation is going to be hard on both of them. She needs therapy.

She also should have police protection while Adam and Warren are on the loose. She is the major witness against them and therefore in danger. They should have 24/7 protection for her until they have all three in custody at least.

It is probably a mistake for Spike to have her live with him at this point but I can understand why he offered. She's lost everything including 3 years of her life. She's vulnerable and as I said, in danger.

If he's going to have her there he should take vacation time to keep the department from being suspect. Lilah could use this as a way to put the victim (and police department) on trial. BIG conflict of interest.  Maybe the department could "assign" Spike to guard duty for her safety to cover those bases.

Spike has a hard time listening to his brain, even when he should. Offering to have Buffy stay with him totally unprofessional and could get him into a lot of trouble. At the moment though, Buffy doesn't trust anyone but Spike and she believes that he can keep her safe.

Buffy definitely needs therapy, it will be important for her to have professional support throughout her recovery.

I really appreciate your comments and suggestions. They really gave me a lot to think about.

It's good that Buffy has learned to trust Spike at least a bit. She will need to have reminders that not all males are dangerous or evil. It won't be easy.

So Hank was a jackass in this too. Not even coming with Dawn to check on Buffy after all she has endured! Glad Dawn is coming back though. Buffy will need her family. They should encourage Willow and Xander as well since they were closer than family at the time Buffy was kidnapped. Having them in her life might ease her back into the world again.

Ben was completely unprofessional. No way should he have been in there to examine her that way. There should at the VERY least have been a female nurse present before his pelvic exam! He should be fired.

Kathleen

Author's Response on April 02, 2018 08:47pm

Seeing Spike protect her in this way is a pivotal point for Buffy and being able to trust not just men but anyone.

Hank is a complete jackass and always will be. Dawn however is a loyal sister and will be back. Buffy is known to try to handle things on her own, but I agree that she is going to need her friends to help her get better.

Ben should be fired. I wanted to use his character to portray the callous way that rape survivors can be treated by society.

So the third guy is Warren...also in character. There is NO way in the world that Maggie Walsh didn't know what was happening.

Don't like the idea that Lilah thinks she can get them off. I really hope they have evidence nailed down in a way that there is no wiggle room.

Kathleen

I have always hated Warren. He just made sense for the role.

I agree that Maggie had to have known. But she is a stubborn woman, as is Lilah. Neither wants to admit defeat but the odds are stacked against them.

Good backstory on how Spike became a police officer and how he became obsessed with finding Buffy.

Buffy is in shock as well as suffering from PTSD. Nice use of Adam and Caleb as the villains in the story. Being Maggie's son gives a reason that Adam fixated on Buffy, he saw her in his mother's class. Maggie must have known what her son and nephew were up to one would think.

Going to be a long road to recovery for Buffy.

Kathleen

Author's Response on April 02, 2018 08:33pm

Thank you so much for your detailed reviews. When choosing the villains for the story, I tried to find the best way tie them together so that it would make sense. Also, I always thought that both characters were particularly creepy.

Buffy's recovery will definitely be a process.
