So much fun this story (deep and grrrr and fun!!)
Also I really love when Buffy gets angry (especially at angel 🥲🥲🥲) so yes!!!!
You gotta love her losing her temper at Angel here. It's so satisfying to hear her yelling! Thanks so much for reading!
I’m a huge fan of stories where Buffy gets captured by the Initiative. Normally fics like that deal with the Slayer aspects but to have Buffy be a vamp in this was an interesting twist. Nicely done
It was really fun to get them into the initiative and do a whole, "Same jail cell" trope on them. I'm glad you liked! Thanks!
I usually don't read vampBuffy fics but someone recced this one so I gave it a go. Having this set during the Initiative time was gold. And I melted when Spike gave Buffy the " I love all of you" speech. Good story, Sigyn.
Thanks for taking a risk on it! Spike is so sweet in this one, isn’t he? I mean, evil, but willing to work within it. Thanks so much!
This is absolutely amazing. I’ve seen and enjoyed the individual ideas (Buffy turned, caught by Initiative, Amara hunt is delayed) but you combined them brilliantly. Buffy’s thrall was fantastic, that entire sequence worked really well, and the slow realizations about Angel and Willow were so different from figuring out Spike’s straightforward motives and plans
Oh, thank you! I had lots of fun turning Buffy into a vampire in this one, and seeing what she'd do. The fact that she had some thrall surprised me, actually. Thank you so much!
Popped in for a re-read.
One of the most believable scenarios for Vamp!Buffy I've seen.
Still love it.
Still wondering whether you're likely to revisit this 'verse with Slayer & Spike coming back to Sunnydale while Kennedy's in residence, 'cos that would be epic!
I am still, sort of. I need to sort out the plot for Slayer Fallen, which died at 15,000 words, just about when Kennedy showed up, actually. (Of course it did.)
Excellent! Perhaps you could kill Kennedy off really quickly? I can imagine the difficulty in making her appear at all sympathetic. Her arrogance would make her particularly vulnerable in the field.
Of course, there is also the question of Dawn. With Buffy being a vampire, the key wouldn't be sent to her, surely?
No, my original plan was to have it sent to Kennedy, and Buffy get mixed up in it. But I'm not even sure the key SHOULD be Dawn at this stage. Did you know, you're the second reviewer trying to brainstorm with me on this today?
Apart from anything else, it would be a bit tricky to introduce Dawn as Buffy's little sister while Joyce is in England.
You'll come up with something.
After all, the key doesn't have to be a human person at all, really. All that is required is for it to be pure.
Although if it's not a living being (of whatever species), you'd have to come up with a different ritual for opening the portal since there wouldn't be any blood to use.
*turns Dawn into a chair and makes the activation mechanism sawdust*
Enjoyed this very much an excellent alternative Initiative story and exploration of how Buffy could live as a vampire and eventually find love and a good and balanced life with Spike.
It's always good to have a work that attempts to deal with the Soul vs No Soul problems that are presented in the series and the philosophical questions of the what or how this premise of human soul would work in the human world. Does having a soul really account for how humans conduct their lives and the choices they make? I am in the category of viewers and current fans who don't accept the "must have soul for a vampire or demon to have free will choice" Barring insanity or the complete incapacity to understand the cultural rules of moral and ethical behavior - individuals have the capacity to make a choice for good or evil conduct.
The soul situation is complicated, and in this story in particular addresses some of the fundamental issues of what it is to be a vampire. I tend to view the soul as the nature of humanity, as the demon nature is of a different style -- the same as a tiger is not the same as a monkey. Which means that a vampire with a human soul is a tiger with the nature of a monkey interjected inside it, and maybe it can work, but it's very different from a pure tiger. But all tigers, even wild, can be trained to some extent, and I feel there's no need to make them all monkeys. Spike, however, was always a very monkey'ish tiger, so I feel he feels better with a monkey -- or human -- soul as part of his make up. But that's just how I see Spike. Buffy... I'm still narrowing down. I think because she's still figuring that out, too. Spike in this story hasn't felt the need for a soul yet, and it ends where it does without him needing one. Buffy is still sorting herself out, but she's accepted Spike, and they're good together. Thank you so much for reading, I'm glad you enjoyed my foray into Vamp!Buffy!
This story was great all around. It was nice to see that their relationship wasn't rushed or forced and I absolutely loved how Buffy confront Angel on all of his bullshit. It would be great to see another epilogue or a continuation further down the line. Thanks for the ride, it was great!
Gotta love Buffy finally getting around to confronting Angel. She should have done it yonks ago. Thanks so much for trying this puppy on, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Can we talk you into giving us short updates of this story? Epilogues to your epilogue?
Oh, wouldn't that be great? I'm not writing much at the moment, everything is stalled, but the banner is glaring at me with teethies from my desktop! I'm so glad people are interested. Thanks!
Kennedy is the new Slayer??? Ugh. Well... I wish her luck. Hah!
On that note, can I just say how much I love how you've thrown in bit of canon as nice little bottom of the box style treasures for your readers? (Parker and Kennedy and Riley with the vamp whores, etc..)
Spike shrugged and kissed the top of her head before gunning it onto the highway. “Whatever makes you happy, love.” - YAY Vampire happy ending!!!
Okay, so she totally lost her soul, but she's not really any different (which we're all incredibly not shocked by). Erm, at least... I *think* she lost her soul? It's perhaps intentionally left vague
In general: this story was an incredibly woven tapestry that made me feel about a million emotions and was just a delightful, cathartic (and sometimes stressful) read. Thank you for sharing this amazing story
Well, she was one of the oldest potentials. I just figured it would definitely strike everyone that no, let's not wait and watch the fireworks with the new slayer....
Actually, Slayer hasn't lost her soul. She's too uptight to find perfect happiness as things stand. But her life is far and away better (and more clear!) with Spike than it was without him.
I'm so glad this story grabbed and touched you, and I'm glad you read through it. Thank you for the wonderful reviews!
I usually avoid Vampire!Buffy fics out of general preference. I love your work, though, so I decided to give it a chance, for once. I'm so very glad I did. You handle canon and work with and around it so expertly! I loved the pay off of Spike promising to make Buffy happy and the fact that the story closes on her not having had that "one moment" yet.
Great, engrossing read. Thanks for sharing!
I think some people do Vampire!Buffy either to get around the immortality thing without changing her at all, or to indulge in some kind of darkness fantasy without taking into account her canon nature. I wasn't trying to do either of those things, here, but instead explore the dichotomy of her being both vampire and slayer both. I'm glad you took a chance on this, and I'm very glad you liked it!
This was awesome! The struggle Buffy felt between demon and soul was so real and there was no easy solution. And the fact that she thought it was just sex that would make her lose her soul. Ah, I did love the chewing out she gave Angel. And Spike was wonderful throughout the entire thing. Angry and loving. His speech about loving Buffy was beautiful and I simply love the idea of them going around the world with Spike trying to make Buffy just beyond happy. I wonder about the moment she loses her soul? :) This was an amazing read! Thank you so much for sharing!
Gotta chew out Angel. The sod deserves it. She really needed Spike, he was the best thing that could have happened to her in this situation. Whether Buffy loses her soul, and the why and wherefore of it... well, sort of doesn't matter, right now. Thanks so much for reading! I'm glad you liked it.
Yeah Buffy being a vampire likely made that gizmo not work properly. Faith (much as I do like the character) would have killed Buffy and anyone Buffy loved as well at this stage. Buffy had no choice. Still I can understand how it would grieve Buffy to have to do it especially with their troubled history. Lots of regrets there (and gee...there's Angel front and center with that too).
It seemed wrong to think that killing her friend meant she was freed of the responsibility of the hellmouth. Well Buffy honey if you had killed her so you COULD be freed it would have been wrong. Killing Faith because otherwise Faith would have killed her is a far different prospect.
Yeah it's best they leave town with Kennedy coming. I cannot stand her and cannot imagine her doing less than staking Spike and likely Buffy too. Arrogant bitca. It would serve Willow right if just as she has a lovely girlfriend in Tara she gets pursued by Kennedy and has to suffer a bit for all she's put Buffy through (feeling vindictive tonight for some reason LOL).
They are doing the right thing. Off to travel, see the world and take it on their own terms. Both compromising where they can and learning as they go.
Perfect ending too: “Think we’ll ever come back again?” she asked. ... Spike shrugged and kissed the top of her head before gunning it onto the highway. “Whatever makes you happy, love.” Yup this is Spike in a nutshell. It's all about the woman he loves. Buffy is going to be very happy at long last.
Excellent story and quite in character too.
I was torn about Faith. I recognize she is redeemable, and I never saw her "fall" as inevitable, but forced upon her through circumstances. (The Mayor was the only one offering her a fucking salary!) But the truth is she is a slayer. With the state of mind she was in when she came out of that coma, the subtleties of life were well beyond her, and there was no way she would have walked away from a fight with a vampire Buffy. Once her little toy failed, all she would have seen is vengeance, no future, so no reason to back down. It was either imprison her or kill her and vampires aren't brilliant at the Imprisoning. Killing they can do. And Buffy was alone, so capturing her alive just wasn't going to be an option. So I'm kind of sad about having to kill Faith, but it does set Buffy up beautifully for the next story, which I'm struggling to write. It's darker than this one. (It would have to be.)
Ah, yes. Kennedy. Kennedy is going to have a lot of fun on the hellmouth.... (This is sarcasm.) I actually don't think Kennedy is going to like being Top Slayer as much as she always thought she would.
Spike is certainly going to do everything in his power to make Buffy happy, as someone said, "Dote the soul out of her, the nicest bit of evil ever." Whether Buffy will let him... well. She's Buffy. Anything's possible.
Thanks so much for getting back to this one! I'm so glad you liked it. It was a little strange twisting the genre, Buffy as a vampire is a different dynamic to follow. I found it easier to vamp Dawn, but then, Dawn was never the Anti-Vampire like Buffy was, so it wasn't such anathema to her. Thanks again!
I love that Spike asked Joyce's permission, that's both hilarious and cute.
Willow had been working with another witch she’d met at school called Tara, and took to the news that another slayer was coming to Sunnydale as if she were about to meet the wife of one of Slayer’s ex’s. “I am prepared to hate her on sight,” she said with staunch loyalty.
Far more reasonable reaction to Kennedy than dating her...
Enjoyable yarn, this was
Well. who the hell would date Kennedy voluntarily? (It wasn't voluntary on the show!)
I loved this. It beautifully describes the eternell soul dilemme de BtVS.
Ensouled Buffy i think would not be so different from soulless Buffy, because she was a good and loyal person with a big heart before her dead, a little like human Spike, was a good person. I think all the evil Angelus does stems from his human character flaws.
thanks for sharing
Aw, I'm glad you read!
I haven't put my finger on what a souless Buffy would actually be like, yet, but fortunately, I haven't had to write that. Yet. But Spike was pretty evil before he had a reason to be good, so it's possible she could be pretty evil, too.
Thanks so much for reading!
I don't usually do Vampire!Buffy stories, they are not really my cup of tea but as this one was by you I thought give it a go! I'm so glad I did! It was bloody brilliant! You did an amazing job!
Aww, you're so sweet! And thank you! I wrote it in much the same space, "Thought I'd give it a go." I'm glad it came out okay!
Naaaawwwww! This was a brilliant ending for this fic. Buffy finally has her freedom, and I have a feeling that Spike is going to ensure she enjoys it. Interesting choice of Kennedy being the next slayer in line, but it makes sense. She was my least favourite potential, so I'm kinda glad she was just a footnote in this.
You did a brilliant job of world building in this story. I really enjoyed how Spike and Buffy's relationship developed, and I am most definitely a convert of vamp!Buffy fics now...so long as they're done right like this one.
Thanks so much for the entertaining read, I'm off to dive into your other challenge fit now.
Kennedy is not a good person, so I don't blame her for being your least favorite anything. But she was the oldest, the best trained, and she had a watcher on call. And I kind of liked the idea of her being around while Willow still had Tara to compare her to... It cannot be a favorable comparison.
Spike is going to take excellent care of his soulled up fledgeling slaypire, because he loves her dearly. I'm so, so, SO glad you enjoyed this story! I cannot speak for any other vamp!Buffy fics, because I haven't read any, but I'm very very glad you liked this one!
Had lots of catching up to do, so saved my last review for the end. Nicely done. I believable vamp Buffy and a very in-character Spike. I'm hoping they are off to have wonderful adventures. :)
Wonderful adventures would be a wonderful end to everything, wouldn't it?
