Laughed so hard at spike’s notes for reference 😂😂😂😂😂
I shamelessly stole the Notes for Reference from the “Binks to Enlightenment” section of Red Dwarf’s episode “Holoship” and I don’t regret it. Honestly, Spike would have seen that episode, too.
Reread since this fic came up in the random fic spot on the homepage. Aaaah I love Spike harassing Walsh. The idiocy of the initiative...
It's fun getting Welsh all... spooked. And stealing from Red Dwarf -- if you're gonna steal, steal from the best.
Gah! I loved this. While watching them fail at their attempted escape, it was nice to watch their relationship begin with their instinctive need to protect each other. I also loved, loved, loved Spike'sSpike's mockery of Professor Walsh. Very Spike-like.
Oh, I stole that mocking scene whole cloth from Red Dwarf. But they're really desperate to be... allies... and they don't like to admit it, those two.
“Notes for reference,” he announced to his cigarettes. “Upon personal observation, it would appear that subject Bug-Shagging Loony with a God Complex is completely off her bird. Brains appear in the anal region. Eyes are piggy, and presumed ineffectual, perhaps indicative of some kind of willful emotional myopia. Genitalia ambiguous, comprising predominantly of cobwebs. If these aberrations are merely the result of residual childhood bullying for her tendency to be an insufferable know-it-all, the subject is likely of no value or interest.”- I. CAN'T. BREATHE.
Well, and here I was afraid that this story was doing to big on the dark and small on the humor (not that there's anything wrong with that, I was just mentally preparing myself). I am SO delighted to see that's not the case.
Hysterically funny chapter, from beginning to end. 20 questions was brilliant.
I seriously took that whole cloth from Red Dwarf, but, you know... worth it! I'm working on a sequel, and it's hard to get the same humor quotient.
You know I usually review at the end but I just had to stop and say...talking into his cigarette packet...hilarious!
I stole it from Red Dwarf, but isn't that a hoot!?
Lister to Red Dwarf, we have in our midst a complete smegpot.
Brains in the anal region. Chin absent, presumed missing. Genitalia, small and inoffensive. Of no value or interest....
I love that Spike didn't want to be seen as childish by Buffy. It's awesome. Also love that she was humming the Doublemeat Palace jingle lol. You weave references like that into your works beautifully.
Your version of Professor Walsh is so so good. So on point. She's great here to the point that she's downright creepy. Her "notes for reference" monologue to herself displayed so much about what she thought of vampires. She really doesn't think they can function on their own. When she said "His hair is pale; if natural perhaps indicative of some form of albinism" I started chuckling. I imagine she'll be educated that not all vamps are alike at some point.
Lines I like:
- "None of the others are two-to-a-bag." Specifically, I like the last bit of that. It's a good line.
- "and probably SSC for her Silver Swimming Certificate, too." Something about this line cracked me up.
- "Genitalia ambiguous, comprising predominantly of cobwebs." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Spike, you crack me up.
Plot points I like:
- Walsh's observation thingy seemed very in-character. It's cool that Spike isn't Hostile-17 in this 'verse. I like that they're 9, 12, and 13, even if Rat's gone. Does that mean the Initiative had just begun in early-S4? Only having 16 vampires pre-Spike seems low. I never really considered the practicality of their numbering system. Anyway, Walsh recording her observations like that, using the chip prototype, talking about using demons as weapons, all are interesting plot points to follow.
- Buffy's throwaway comment about not being Spike's mate, and Walsh's blatant ignoring of it, could be a fun development to follow.
- Spike noticing that our resident Slaypire is gonna need to feed very soon. Also, a reminder that she's Angel's still-baby fledge was fun.
- The twenty questions game at the end is awesome. I love softer moments like that between Spike and Buffy even in the middle of a mess like this.
Loved the chapter, Sig. It was fun, had humor, advanced the plot in a few key areas, and helped to develop a camaraderie between Spike and Buffy.
It's gonna be fun to see them in the same room going forward.
Excited to keep reading soon!
Yay, Dark, 400th review!
This is a very, very funny chapter, even if I do say so myself. It's all the Red Dwarf references. Spike has albinism, he and Slayer are mates, Walsh has a silver swimming certificate...
Though I think the cobwebs line I got from Drop Dead Fred.
I always figured the Initiative hadn't been particularly active in the actual demon catching scheme until season 4, and Buffy was coming into a newly established active phase of the project. We know they'd been around in a passive way since after WWII, but I don't think they were doing much actively until 1999.
The banter between Spike and Walsh was hilarious. And I relish the fact that you described Finn as "bland-faced".
Isn't that a hilarious scene? Gonna steal, steal from the best!
“We’re both buggered, together or not.” I'm afraid that is the truth.
Love the contrast...he paces and she hums...they will drive each other crazy at this rate.
I get that you want to rid the world of vampires and demons. I really do understand what you’re getting at. If you want to know more about what you’re doing, I can put you in touch with the right people. The Watcher’s Council is– Oh dear Buffy still thinking humans are good and noble if misguided! She really did sleep through history class didn't she?
and understanding of tools Good God did she think vampires are chimpanzees? This scientist clearly is blind enough to be on the Council. She sees but dismisses when her observations (or what should be) counter her preconceived notions. Clearly she doesn't even recognize them as sentient!!!!!!
ADORE, love and every other synomyn Spike and his mocking of Walsh. I was grinning the whole way through.
I'm not his mate Not yet maybe but Buffy you protest too much.
presence of researcher appears to be affecting the behavior of the subject, Gee do you think? I really do hope that Spike gets to make good on his threats.
the slaypire was still just a baby fledge, not even a year as a demon. Yup, she's still a newbie and one left on her own most of that time too. Angel is a total ass! He should have at least stayed to make sure she found her feet properly. Oh yeah...he doesn't do that does he?
Love them playing word games at the end.
Just loved the humor in this macbre setting, so very Spike. Even with the humor the things being said (and the attitude) by Walsh was chilling. Open your eyes Buffy, these people may be human but they are far more evil than many a demon. Even more than the vampire in there with you...he at least helped prevent an apocalypse when Angel started it. These bastards would just take notes or worse.
They're both stressed, I think at some level they were both TRYING to drive each other crazy.
Spike's mocking of Walsh was very much the product of that Red Dwarf episode I referenced. Some lines I took whole cloth. But it just seemed perfect for Spike in this circumstance.
I just love how Spike goaded Walsh! Was that the part from Red Dwarf? I've never seen it but now I'm thinking that was something I should look into! Riley again is an ass. Forest seems more perceptive which is an interesting twist to how I usually see him!
Yeah, I was a big Dwarfer from way back. That bit was from Holoship, which was one of the considerably better episodes.
I recognized Red Dwarf as soon as you mentioned "Silver Swimming Certificate" and then this big part later good use of the inspiration. I still enjoy Red Dwarf
It's sort of amazing how blind people can make themself to not see any suffering. Well we have seen it before in history. Combat training will keep Buffy and Spike from the worst horror, for awhile at least. It will give them more time to become friends and flee.
I was a MAJOR Dwarfer. It was probably my first official "fandom", and this was a perfect place to shamelessly steal some and use it!
It's a serie I do return to from time to time. It's such a wonderful cast of characters. Rimmer is my favorite, all his faults (and he have every fault there is) makes him so enjoyable.
"understanding of tools" You don't say?
Oh, that clothing/"passage of time" burn. :D
Spike has such finely honed skill for insulting people...
He has a fine education in scathing British comedies....
I'm sure that helps.
Another great chapter. I particular liked the end.
“Can I use it to gut somebody?”
Spike grinned. “Most likely you could, slayer,” he said.
Another example of fantastic characterisation. I'm really enjoying this. Keep up the great work!
She's kinda in the mood to gut someone, isn't she?
Love Spike Aping Walsh. Hilarious.. and they got some valuable info.
Now it's vital they try to escape before they're chipped!
Indeed! Getting chipped would be a very, very bad thing!
This has been so enjoyable so far! I love Spike's immature humor and the grudging companionship that is developing with him and Buffy. Buffy as a vampire is still such an adorable badass. I'm very grateful that you're updating this so quickly and spoiling us all!
Yeah, I'll be updating daily until it's over. Then I have ANOTHER challenge fic to torment you all with!!!
Slayer is a dangerous charmer, she really is.
Well...she really was a one dimensional character wasn't she? Spike was very comical, yet scary.......Who knew? Another use for a deck of smokes!...:)..... I think he rattled her a bit.......The Initiative really had no idea just exactly what they were dealing with did they? I don't think they even realized any of their "specimens" , in the Buffyverse, were sentient beings, capable of emotions or cunning or pain........... It will be interesting to see, if Spike uses both his human knowledge and the knowledge he has gained from historical events, and of incidents of his capture and torture during his long life, in his subsequent encounters with Walsh and others. You made mention of some of them in the last chapter. He, Spike, has shown himself to have layers, the intellectual and the thug, among other personas......I think she would be fascinated by him, but that in and of itself, would probably not be a good thing, from Spike's perspective.So...I think a line from Harry Potter is appropriate..."Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride!" Really entertaining chapter.
Yeah, Spike rattled her. And he got out once...
"notes for reference." Loved it!! Spike is so obviously smarter than the average vamp, I can't believe Walsh dismissed it as retention of irony, satire, and imitation.
residual human affect. . . inability to recognize the passage of time. . . albinism. . . COMPLETELY HILARIOUS.
Nice how Buffy acknowledge his "real mature" antics yielded information.
Yeah, this is where things get funny. Things get darker again later... but hey! Real mature, Spike!
Ha! Walsh has bitten off more than she could chew. Wonderfully hilarious exchange. (And I can just see Buffy standing there rolling her eyes the whole time). And I adore the 20 questions- because the last question didn't really narrow it down, Buffy!
Wonderful update! Thank you! Just what I needed before work :-)
I kind of like the idea that the 20 questions game wasn't entirely Harmony's idea in canon...
Just clicked on this story this afternoon and I'm loving it, especially this chapter! I've never seen Red Dwarf, but Spike messing around with Walsh was pure gold. Glad the chip hasn't gone in yet, hope Buffy and Spike can both avoid that...
Yeah, trying to get it removed is just a hassle and a half...
