Hmm... I wonder where Joyce lives and if Dawns exists here.

Finally, Spike remembers that drawing.

Your Sunnyhell is turning up more and more interesting and with increasingly complex rules and expectations. Beautiful. A lot of questions answered and a lot of questions raised. Do the Neophytes volunteer themselves or were forced into service? Spike mentioned hoping Dru to be proud of him, so presumably volunteers?

Wonders if Giles was never with the council, maybe he went to Sunnyhell during/after his ripper period. Also, how the Watchers Council deal with the Slayer not working under them?

“He’s a dictator but not a depot.”

“D’ you mean despot?”

“Whatever.”

lol. Even in the middle of a serious conversation, Buffy's valley girl-ness rears its head. That said, Mayor Wilkins might be a dictator but it do would be nice to have a clean city where everyone throw rubbish inside the proper bins instead of on the floor.

Hmm... a green demon in a yellow truck, perhaps the same one in Callum's drawing? Could there be relation?

Oh no! Cordy! Was looking forward to how you portray her (nice to see Andrew, by the way). Also, tiny bites. Callum? Or not. A proper magic academy is good to see, hopefully this Willow never know to go astray.

Oh~ This is really interesting. Found it by way of the Featured Stories (congratulations, by the way) and thought that the summary sounds different. I'm glad I checked this out.

I've thought that the way Mayor Wilkin's operates Sunnydale have a potential for better co-habitation by humans and demons and it's nice to see this written down as a story. You're also utilising The Anointed One and the Soul curse(?), both of which could've been played with more in the series but wasn't.

Was wondering how Spike & Dru came to have souls and how the Guild manage to keep the rest of the vampires in line. So, it's a punishment which is treated as community service. Wonders what Spike did for him to receive it and what was that betrayal he referred to with Angel.

Also like how your Sunnydale/hell universe has a whole different rules to it that's natural to its inhabitants.

Thanks for writing and sharing the story :D

Aha Callum's running away makes perfect sense.  I feel for the kid!  I hope Dru listens and he has better servants who will treat him as the child he really is and not an abomination in the future.  I like his friends.  Very clever how they arranged for him to be able to play with them until both his keepers were there to mess it up.  Yes kids often take adult threats literally so it's no wonder he panicked.

I'm not feeling the UST so it could be stepped up if you are going there.  I DO get that Spike is attracted but not so much Buffy.  That's not a complaint but you asked so you must want UST.  The fight scenes have been fine IMHO.  No need for any heavy duty clobbering thus far.

Loved the two beer factory workers, very believable how they were magicked and didn't know why they fought Spike and Buffy.  Nice.

Enjoyed the chapter.  NIce background exposition told nicely.

So, there was no connection between Callum disappearing and the other crimes. That was good, it gave this a more "real" feeling. I like what we saw of his friends.

Now Spike and Buffy can focus on the Cordelia murder.

That's a relief. Just normal kid stuff. Granted the bodyguards were jerks but The Anointed One was kidnapped or something.

Wicked Cheeto!  I'd use been checking to see if there was an update to this yesterday, yah!

As for your specific questions:  I was happy with the fight scene.  I think the UST, as it is, is a nice slow build --  but it kind of depends where you want to get to, and how fast.  Right now, i would put things in the "growing awareness of potential" bucket, rather than the "must jump each other" bucket.  But these things can change fast.  :).

Hope that was the kind of feedback you were looking for!

Ooo a clue!

Love the bonding over fashion and shopping with Keli.  Buffy and Spike have their own different but complimentary ways to interrogate.  They make a good team.

I am highly suspicious of Amy.

Lovely update.

So there's still a Sunnydale at the earth side. It makes me wonder a bit why humans stay here? Never really being day and a lot of dangerous creatures even if the town is in great order. It never sounded like the humans was forced to stay, so something must be really good.

Author's Response on August 09, 2016 06:03pm

Most of the humans who move to Sunnyhell are either magical or already aware of the demonic activity that goes on in both dimensions. Wilkins' Sunnyhell dimension has laws and consequences whereas in the human dimension no one believes in vampires etc.  Most vampire murders go unsolved and unpunished there.  There is a Slayer there too but she is One Girl in All the World who stands alone against blah blah blah.  Buffy's got a lot of backup in Sunnyhell and many of the vamps are ensouled. Seeing as there's magic and demons in either place it's a lot safer in Sunnyhell which I envision as being the demon version of Singapore ;)   Also, despite Angel being a huge jerk to Sonya in chapter 2, Sanguine are really well taken care of and very well compensated. They're not slaves like the 'cows' in Pylea from ATS.

But the never being day would bum me out a lot too.  I positively HATE winter for that reason.  I hate the dark more than the cold.  Also, you can't just go there.  Wilkins doesn't just let anybody in; there are strict immigration laws.  Spike and Dru were able to stay based on Angel's sponsorship plus they had to join the Guild and agree to abide bit its laws.

Whew!  Sunnyhell history lesson over ;)

magnus374 Replied on August 11, 2016 02:26pm

Well it probably is better than Sunnydale and it seems like everyone can live just as good here as in the "normal" world. In many way this is like the normal world, just with the unnormal as a normal part of it (a strange way of wording it, but it fits). I can see in my mind different political fraction with different creatures that tries to get influence and balance each other ( I can't get the Hollows out of my mind, everytime I read this it reminds me of the books, even the title sounds like it could have been one) The Mayor will hold things in order though.

So Buffy is something different from the Slayer in the normal world, interesting.

Great update.

LOVE the mayor, did in canon and do here and absolutely love his ordered society in his town.

So now we understand more about the souled vampires and the reasons why (other than punishment).  It makes sense if you want to run a tight ship.  You can't have chaos in a society like there is in Sunnyhell.  So the Mayor has the same powers as the demon in canon that gave Spike his soul back.

I'm glad that Spike and Buffy have essentially been ordered to work together on finding the Anointed One and solve the murder.  Can't wait!

I can see why Spike would be at least nervous of the Mayor...great power there!

Excellent.

This is so fascinating.  Everything we learn and the things that are hinted to us creates such a wonderful picture. I have always liked the Mayor and he was perfectly in character. Him being here must be a big stabilizing factor. There probably are a lot of tension between the different fractions, but with Olivark in control there won't be too much power struggle.

It's interesting that having a soul could be both a punishment and something you have to have for some work. I suppose that the punishment version somehow is worse.

I mentioned the "Hollows" before and this with the different fractions reminded me again.

There are several things that doesn't mix up with the casees, a conspiracy? Amy do seem to be involved.

Good rules there at the end.  Nice to know.

I really am suspicious of Amy at this point.  She seems central to at least all the Blood Magic stuff and I'll bet the Annointed One's disappearance is connected in some way.

I really like Sunnyhell.  I think I could live there with no problem.  The Mayor has set up a city that has all kinds of species living side by side in relative peace.  Love it!

Excellent update.

Author's Response on August 09, 2016 06:11pm

I could live there too, except maybe the perpetual darkness.  But Buffy doesn't feel the angst at being responsible for everyone in the world's safety that she did in the Earth dimension.  Angel doesn't feel the solitude of being the only ensouled vampire and Spike, even though he IS heartbroken over Dru leaving him has found a job that he likes and it helps him cope.  He's not just Dru's lover and caretaker so when that purpose was taken away it wasn't as devastating as it was for him in the Buffyverse. Huh, I just realized that.  Good writing me ;)

Nice chapter. Buffy is quite relaxed around demons here but it fits in this verse with all the demons that are an official part of the society.

Cordelia as a waitress? Then she must have been desperate financially.

It's suspicious that so many things are centered around Amy but then you like misleading hints see the anointed one and Rack as first suspects. wink

I am curious about how Spike's got his soul now as it seems to be a punishment for rule breaking.

It's smart to have vampires on the police force as their senses are quite sharp.

I wonder what Rack is up to first he tried to steal Willow's magic - by the way will it replenish with time as Rack didn't get everything - and Cordilia murder also screams magic.

Author's Response on July 27, 2016 04:55pm

Next chapter I will address the soul-having.  Her magic will replenish.  Magic is stored in the blood (in this AU).  Loss of blood weakens your magic.

Aha the hostility is attraction!  Buffy immediately jumped to him hitting on her LOL.  Interesting.

Love the police vamp and human.  Helpful how the vampires can sense things from evidence that their human counterparts could not.

So magical exsanguination killed Cordy.  Rack would seem to be key to the investigation if only for information.  I wonder if the Annointed One was kidnapped for some magic usage?

Excellent!

Kathleen

Author's Response on July 27, 2016 05:02pm

Of course it is, it's Spike ;)

No need to wait around for blood matching in the Sunnyhell PD.  Most vamps can tell you right there.

Oddly enough, you can't really use a vampire for blood magic.  Hmmm, think I should post the rules in the end notes?

I also wonder, Is Olivark still around, or has he left his city?

Author's Response on July 24, 2016 10:34pm

Spike's kind of gotten distracted from looking for the AO hasn't he?  Oh yes, Olivark is still around.  He has to make sure that Duloc Sunnyhell stays a perfect place ;)
