It's a clever idea to have a post series reunion story where they are too distracted by an impending apocalypse to talk about their relatioship. Usually reunion fics are over so quickly.
Thanks, and I know what you mean. I'm glad you're still enjoying it!
I knew she'd see Spike at some point but that was very nicely done. I wasn't expecting him to appear right then, so it was great to be able to share (a very small) part of her shock and surprise.
Thank you! I'm glad you decided to give this story another try. :)
I loved this story! You did such a good job of capturing the characters' voices but Spike's in particular. I binged the story over a few days and couldn't put it down.
Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
It is so frustrating to see the way both Buffy and Spike stubbornly refuse to talk head on, but it's also very in character. So D'Hoffryn is shaping up to be a Big Bad? Interesting.
It might take some time, but Buffy and Spike will work things out. ;) Glad you're enjoying the story so far!
It would be nice if Buffy and Spike bring Noelle with them, when they got back to their world. She can be the daughter they can't have, and she's technically their daughter, in a way. Problem would be, who will stay with her. Buffy and Spike have a dangerous life. I don't think they can abandon their previous life to stay with her, can they? But they can try. Noelle has nobody, poor little thing. I'm curious to find out if she remains with them.
I won't spoil anything, but there's some hope for Noelle yet.
Thanks again for taking the time to read and review.
I like this story very much and like this mature versione of Spike, even if sometimes he's just too blind to see Buffy's feelings :)
Thought Noelle could be their daughter the moment Buffy thought Noelle was staring at her too much and when she said she reminded her of Spike.
I'm glad you're enjoying this Spike. But you're right-- sometimes you just want to knock a little sense into him.
Love the two of them finally connected and happy.
"What about evil flight attendants possessed by demons who worship another demon or something? There's that, right?" Poor Buffy just lost her daughter would worry more about losing her sister (or anyone else close to her).
YAY they couldn't do it, couldn't make Noelle just not be. Good for them (although having her wander about alone, silent and scared until Wes found her wasn't nice).
Nothing like facing parenthood to make you look back on your life and all the mistakes (in Spike's case outright evil) you've made/done. He has to be wondering if he'll be judged as unworthy and lose all he now has. "Want her so much I can barely stand it."
I really, really loved every bit of this story. I am grinning ear to ear at the HEA ending (yet there is that real danger still out there because the war is ongoing).
It reads wonderfully as is but I wouldn't mind revisiting this verse. Wonder if Spike make any inroads on those 5 boys and 4 more girls he spoke of in the bedtime story LOL. Bet he'd certainly try for it.
Thank you again for taking the time to read this story! Your reviews made my entire week.
It's good to know you wouldn't mind seeing more of this verse, too.
You can't have the best of both of those worlds. Why not!? Yes I think they've earned it. Buffy should make that hat from his ribs if they lose anyone (especially Noelle).
No way in hell is Spike going to be accepting of ANY deal that removes Noelle from existence. Nothing they could offer to him would be acceptable.
Man that was COLD! They didn't even get to say goodbye. Buffy is gutted but so is Spike. They loved Noelle. The Powers suck if they can't find a go-around on this. You think that if you distance yourself from it, it'll get less complicated. That it won't be your fault. The thing is, it never was. None of it. You need to understand you're not to blame. Yes Buffy always assumes blame even when events aren't her fault. That's a double grief.
Well he took the human attributes but I think a big part was because he wanted at least a chance to have a Noelle in time. He really loved that little girl as did Buffy.
I can't imagine why they'd give you back the one bird who made you into something our slayer here never could. This was about personal gain and payback. It wasn't about helpin' out your fellow man. Or vamp, for that matter." Duh Angel...you have a problem differentiating between a punishment and a reward. Your soul is a curse, a punishment and not a reward or something that should earn a reward for you. Getting Cordy back when this is over would be a reward and yet the entire thing was intended as a punishment. *shakes head*...he is thick as a pile of boards.
"Regardless, Willow has done more good here today than you could possibly imagine, and I won't have you meddling." And Giles continues to disrespect and undervalue Spike. *bitch slaps Giles repeatedly* What do you think Spike has been doing? Willow and Buffy are the only ones who did good, made sacrifices?
So Xander is proud of Anya's role at the hellmouth and Giles acknowledges it but he's an ass toward Spike...typical!
The people here…the ones we know of? They were lost to us in our world. AHA! I think I was right!! It made me wonder if this world was created to hold 'em. To give 'em a new life and make 'em forget all about their sacrifices Sounds reasonable. I'm thinking of how W&H had that suburban hell dimension where they held Lindsey in canon...why not a special dimension for this purpose?
The pendant would trap them again, wouldn't it? The innocent souls that were brought back? They'd just disappear. Yes they would be lost again. Convoluted plan on the part of the Senior Partners but it worked.
Time to get this rescue on the road!
Love the banter between Dawn, Buffy and Spike. Felt very real.
Spike being a bit unfriendly to Giles makes sense. The last time he saw him was not a good memory and not just because Giles tried to have him killed either although that should have been more than enough.
"I won't say I'm overly fond of the way we left things between us, William, but-" ... "William now, is it?" How about addressing him as Spike for one (Giles using William is clearly meant as it sounds, directed only at the souled part of the being he actually owes an apology to.). A thank you for sacrificing yourself and saving the world wouldn't be amiss either you berk.
"If you cared at all about what that girl is about to do here today, you wouldn't waste precious time trying to start an argument." And the not so subtle implication that Spike doesn't TRULY know how to love! "That girl" isn't the only one about to do some world saving for that matter. Shut up Watcher! You lost my respect when you left Buffy in S6 and haven't done a thing to regain it yet. You're gonna have to work for it honey!
The poet in him had never left. SO true even without a soul.
We can't afford to screw this up when a child's life is on the line. Oh NOW you care about Noelle. Angel you are a hypocrite and trying to make yourself look like the selfless warrior isn't going to change a thing. Buffy and Spike already know you didn't give a rats hiney about Noelle or any of the others when you pulled them back.
Buffy did a nice showy way of declaring the war on.
Typical Angel trying to be the commander in chief LOL. He's not even dealt with these things before.
I'm honestly convinced that the Giles we saw in those later seasons was pod Giles. The fact that he would just go along with Wood's plan in season 7 always gets me, too.
Wow I wonder if Reyes is fully truthful but it does sound legitimate. So some of this was payback for Liam being killed and a vengeful Darla huh. Behind every disaster there's an Angel/Liam/Angelus in one form or another it seems LOL.
The biggest folly of Angel's NFA apocalypse was how bloody stupid it was in general. Wulfram and Hart was a multi national, multi dimensional evil firm with the Senior Partners not on this plane. Even with the best success Angel could have hoped for he might take out the LA branch! Big woop! There was still every other branch and then all of them in every other dimension. Lunacy.
Your kind rarely sees the distinction between right and wrong. Under normal circumstances, you might say they're incapable of it. But you...you've always been an anomaly, haven't you? Even when you lacked a soul, you still went and sought it out in order to become what your slayer deserved. A slayer who you should despise, who you should destroy. Spike was always different and it wasn't the soul.
Anya has her pendant and can undo it all and I wouldn't like that one bit. I agree with Wes...Noelle has earned all her memories of Buffy and Spike. Looks like a brawl is the only answer because there is no way Spike, Buffy and Noelle should just give themselves up.
I always wondered about that. Angel seemed to think everything would be so much better if he got rid of the LA branch. But you're right-- Wolfram and Hart were everywhere. They weren't just in one city.
Agreed. Spike did a lot of good even without that soul.
Ahhh Darla! Well that's fitting too. So the vampires are the turncoats. I can easily see Darla doing anything she deems in her best interest.
Dawn protected Noelle, YAY! Such a good auntie.
A heart that didn't beat felt like it was on the verge of bursting when the little girl reached out and traced bump after bump with her bare hands. I love this acceptance from Noelle. His heart would have broken if she had rejected him. I've always loved that image of acceptance in fic...touching the bumpies and not being repelled...it melts my heart.
I think Spike's idea is a good plan actually. Bring the good guys over and kill the demons then seal the dimension.
Yup she should have been saying those words all along then he wouldn't be sitting there wondering.
"I guess I should just come out with it then and end the suspense." ... "Be my guest." ..."Did you sleep with her?" Priorities! SO much else he should have been concerned about but THIS is his sole interest. Says everything. In the first place it is not his business, hasn't been since he walked away from Buffy after her HS graduation YEARS ago! Why not ask about Fred since Spike mentioned she was there? Why not ask about the child that Buffy and Spike are so concerned about, that Whistler said was important?
"You heard, yeah. But did you even care?" Exactly. Angel had them brought back even knowing that the situation in the other dimension was likely dire. He did not care about anything except getting Buffy back. Had she not reacted with anger as she did upon their return he wouldn't even regret it, would likely be expecting to just "bask" in her gratitude!
She almost blew it again by waffling. Glad she did clear it up and said it again and again.
Even after she's said she loves him he won't press for sex until she lets him know she wants that...not after what happened before. He'll never again feel secure enough to initiate unless she explicitly lets him know his body is welcomed.
"Someone who's playing both sides," Buffy agreed. Hum...something like a tracking device? My money is on Warren the creep.
Glad no one else was living in his building and glad Illyria warned them in time.
I'd wager it's what started this in the first place. He never was one to let it go. Absolutely. Angel wanted to prevent them from getting close. THAT was his priority.
"A soul can make you seem more human or make you into what you feel someone else might deserve. We all make mistakes, whether we've got one or not. Won't make excuses for him, as I've been there myself, but what he did this time was selfish." So true and he's right it was selfish, completely! Angel even had guidance from Whistler (Willow too) and they CHOSE to ignore it, chose to let a little girl possibly die not to mention the others they didn't even know about.
"Angel. He always thinks he knows what's best for me." And acts unilaterally.
Good last words there Buffy. Try to repeat regularly.
