I think I hate a little bit this chapter, it's not that I liked Bob (Mostly I didn't mind him) it's just that by killing him you're making it so Buffy doesn't have to choose.

Obviously I love that Spike is finally back but I would have liked seeing the confrontation between him and Bob.

Other than that I'm loving the story :)

Author's Response on May 16, 2016 06:27pm

Oh, well, I don't think you would've like how the story would've turned out if Bob hadn't died.  :)  Spike can be a possessive, selfish jerk, but even so, I can't see him having a 'confrontation' with Buffy's husband or trying to break up her family, especially knowing that she does love Bob and is happy with him.  He's been out of the picture for 12 years, and I don't see him being angry that somebody else stepped in to love her and be a father to her children after he 'died'.  Spike, as I understand him, would've walked away from her (but not Billy), and I'm fair certain Buffy would've let him.  We all have different takes on the characters, though, which is what makes the world of fanfic so interesting.

Thanks so much for your thoughts!

I always enjoy your stories so very much - loved reading this one again.  I still haven't read your story where Buffy goes back in time and meets up with Spike in his all evil vampire status - and like the reviewers and you state - we know he did all those evil deeds - and of course your readers know this but it's such a difficult thing to go back to that period.

This story is so completely different as many of your others are - I like seeing this transformed Spike but I don't forget his past - maybe it's just that I don't have to dwell in all his evil history to understand the character or to accept a story that does not bring in his horrendous evil past as part of his current status.  I do need to read that story - just my heart is always so heavy with what goes on in our real world - makes me so sad just to even type this - having to deal with Evil Spike and all the moral questions of a Buffy living in his history - not something I look forward to.

Anyway - wonderful reading this again and I like how you brought their family connections to a realistic end.

Author's Response on March 29, 2016 12:34am

Ha, yes, every story is completely different. It's all a big writing experiment.  :)

I haven't re-read it in a long time, but I think most of Spike's evil in 'Proud Trophies' is off-screen.  I prefer to imply dark things than actually write them.

Thanks so much for the review!

This was sweet... nice job how you made Bob so appealing and his death (and Buffy's loss) so sad, even when we all still want Spike to be her love. Very skillful. I don't love how they've grown apart from their family (but I understand it) and don't love Buffy's wanting to die... but this was very well written.

Aw, I'm glad you liked Bob despite him not being Spike.  Some folks weren't so forgiving.  :)   Thanks!

Boy - did I love this story - so great to get some works that reflect what happens in the comic book seasons.  Your treatment of taking Spike away  just at the moment when they would have finally found their great joy of their lives and love come together works beautifully.  It is heartbreaking and yet a terrific plot for exploring Buffy's terrible loss and how she is forced to live through it all and then, as in real life, eventually find love with another person.

Love how you finish this with the generations continuing and their immortals lives finally coming to an end by their choice.  It's a great way to end their life journey.

Congratulations - a wonderful addition to the Buffy & Spike stories.

LOL - even with how beautifully you write about Buffy and Angel, it is realistic and forgiveness is always a good thing - but the very thought that Buffy would ever have any romantic feelings for Angel again is so hateful to me.  Yeah, I know, how petty and hateful people really can be -

Author's Response: I always figured that even if Spuffy fans hate Angel/Riley/whomever, *Buffy* isn't supposed to, so I have to try to at least make her nice to them!  :)

I love this enough I've read it a couple of times. I am so sorry I have been bad about not reviewing as I do *blushes with guilt*.

I am struck with the irony. Spike "lost" his chance to watch his son grow for about the same number of years as Angel did Connor! Once again he's stuck replaying his grand sires life. Poor Spike, it's like he's cursed LOL.

Also a thought on Twilight..... I've always believed the whole Belle/Edward "love story" smacked way too much of Bangel ...one reason I never had a desire to read much less ship them. Twilight was an interesting choice on the writers part wouldn't you think for the revival of Bangel in other bodies LOL Instead of carrying Belle (Buffy) around they flew to screw. Enough of that though. Both are bad memories put that way (Bangel ANY way for that matter).

You've done a great job of taking elements of the comics and making a wonderful Spuffy story out of it. Keeping Buffy young is one way to allow them the time they lost even as Billy has had his dad but not until this point. Spike had years to become a solid (if mute and kinda weird) part of Annie's life too so he'll integrate nicely. I love how you had the "other man" be Dowling because there is a respect between Spike and him that makes it less hurtful for both of them knowing Buffy has loved them both and always will.

I'm likely to reread this again and will try to be better with reviews!

Again, thanks for making the elements of the comics so much better!

Kathleen

Author's Response:

I have done my very best to not know anything about Twilight (in either incarnation, ha!), but esp the sparkly vamp wannabes.  I love when folks see far more in my work than what I had purposefully planned - makes me seem all brilliant and stuff - are you an English major by any chance? :)  Huh, that is interesting that I accidentally made them miss their sons an equal amount, hadn't even noticed it until you said... uh, wait, I planned that, I really did!

I have no idea where the ideas came from, I guess that's the creative muse, right?  Thanks so much for the fantastic review, I'm glad my poor comics story gets some love!

Loved the ending! Brilliant story and in the end Buffy being with Bob wasn't so bad... So many things stood between Buffy and Spike, but gotta say Bob was more of a settling situation that was eventual love. Not great love, but love. A sweetness about them, but not fire.
I do have to comment about a previous chapter when you pointed out Scenarios. I think it was Scenario B about the hurt (rape) issue. I have been hugely against this on some board discussions. Personally, I would have been appeased with your use of hurt without the parenthesis of rape. In my mind he hurt Buffy yes, but he didn't go with the intention of rape nor did he stick around to make Buffy feel. He fled in horror. That is not attempt or in any way rape. Hurt or unbelievable pain ridden almost borderline delirious with pain he had no way of recognizing because he is souless, definitely. But most argue this was attempt or rape. Why I have no idea when Buffy was worse to him and she has the soul. I wasn't on the bandwagon of Spike was right. What he did in that bathroom was borderline wrong, but rape? No. Hurting Buffy yeah. But I could go on, except I won't LOL. Excellent story! I hope to see more from you in the future!

Fabulous job here. Definitely did a good job twisting what actually happened...damn writers lol. Couldn't make Spuffiers wig with total happiness! Just so you know love the story...still not happy with Buffy and the way she is treating Spike. Disgusting it is. She should be ashamed. Let him go, he's not a freaking dog! She is truly horrible. I don't know what I'd do, but if a man I loved more than words came back from being 'dead' and I was with someone else? I'd seriously have a hard time figuring out what to do. But I would never string either of them. THIS is what she is doing. Stories like this bother me. She has her husband and Spike as her dog...unbelievable. Yeah I was disgusted at how she's handling this. I feel bad for Bob, but the one I feel more for is always going to be Spike. He got so much taken away from him.
But I still have to tell you Amazing! I loved how you handled this chapter versus the comics. Well done!

Thought I'd comment in between reading this. Good story and idea. I have followed the comics. Actually all of them but sometimes I could never really follow them. Detective Dowling and Buffy? I really didn't see that pairing, but I guess. The writers really like having Buffy get around don't they?
I get the moving on and the relationship seems almost like settling. Buffy jumps her thoughts which is really like her. What do I mean? First one minute she is gungho this is my family nothing changes it and then next she's planning to remodel her basement to be an apartment for Spike but not give him access to her home. Almost like he's her dirty little secret again! This is why it's so true to her character. But wow does she want her cake and to eat it too? Seems that way! That would crush Spike's heart (when he's back to normal) and yes I read the part about encouraging Bob to go out with Buffy...but people forget that Spike can read Buffy pretty darn well. So I don't know what to think about that. Anyway...moving on it happens. I understand that and think Spike would understand it too...but I still think it would hurt him too.
I have some serious Buffy issues LOL. On to read more and hoping I don't want to slap her LOL.

I'm not a follower of the comics, but had heard Buffy was pregnant. I was so hoping it was Spike's. Now, I have to wonder what they've done since reading your comment about it not being at all canon in one of the earlier chapters. I've enjoyed reading some of the comic fics since Spike has come back into her life, since I only read Spuffy. I thought you did a beautiful job with your first piece. I thought the characters were wonderful and the storyline was realistic for what it was. It broke my heart to see Spike's mind so shattered, and I rejoiced to see him recover to have his Slayer's back. I thought I would feel ill toward Bob, but I didn't. I thought he was an amazingly understanding person. I love how you ended things as well. It reminded me of the first fic I read long ago. Spike dies shortly before Buffy, but refuses to go on without her, so he tellsDeath a story while he waits for her to tell her those left behind goodbye. Then they go to visit Death's brother, Morpheus. Thanks for sharing such a lovely story.

I thoroughly enjoyed your exceedingly well written story. It caught my attention and I couldn’t stop until I had finished it.  I loved that you knitted everything together so wonderfully well and the flashbacks were done with style. I found the story to be realistic and with perfectly executed set of events that led to the final chapter of our heroes lives.   I was also thrilled that you updated very quickly (another bonus) and have already re-read the whole story as it was so good. I have placed it in my file for annual re-reads where other great Spuffy tales sit.  Congratulations on submitting a great first Spuffy fan fic.
