Seasonal Spuffy

We love to celebrate everyone out there working to keep Spuffy alive and well, so we're happy to promote the Seasonal Spuffy stories that we have housed here on Elysian Fields. We've got a brand new Seasonal Spuffy category that authors can choose when they're loading a story here that was written for Seasonal Spuffy. If you already have a story here that was written for a round of Seasonal Spuffy, you can edit it and add the Seasonal Spuffy category. That way, when readers want to admire all the works created for Seasonal Spuffy, they can head to the category and sort and filter just like with all the other categories.

There's a free-for-all day coming up on June 21, so if you're interested in contributing to Seasonal Spuffy, check out the rules here. Then get your creation ready to post on one of the Seasonal Spuffy pages, and then on EF as well!

Another important TOS/Policy update

TOS/Policy update and explanations/definitions:

Social networking is always evolving and we at Elysian Fields try to keep up with those evolving issues to the best of our ability. This often leads to new or revised policies and Terms Of Service as with the Patron site links a few months ago.

It is our objective to have Elysian Fields be a place where all of us who love these characters can share and enjoy fanworks that continue to tell stories that center on the Spuffy connection. We aim to have it be a place where we can be a community of fans where interaction is encouraging and polite, where members can feel they are in a safe place to enjoy and share.

This does require a certain amount of, for lack of a better word, policing (insofar as volunteers are able to do so). And so for that reason, there are going to be a few changes and/or policies put into place in the coming weeks.

CHAT / Chatzy:

On the menu bar is a link (Chat) to a Chatzy live chat room. That menu link has always been merely a convenience. This chat room has never been an official part of Elysian Fields. It can be reached by going directly to it thus: the direct link from the menu will be removed as soon as coding changes are made. None of the mods here have the time or authority to police a site that is not officially ours so it has been decided that the link will be eliminated. Feel free to link on your own with the above link and enjoy the chatting but remember that we at EF are not responsible for any conversations that take place there.

We are tweaking our policies on-site behavior, this is another reason we are breaking the direct link to Chatzy.

It is our intention to set clear expectations about member behavior and protect and preserve our online reputation.

We have provided multiple outlets for conversations between members that we do have authority over and will be continuing to monitor. They all serve a purpose but are not all the same.

The shoutbox is located on the home page of the site and as such is visible to every person, registered member or not, who visits our site.

The shoutbox is a place for members to say hello, give RL updates, ask questions, make announcements and so on. There are guidelines however and a reason for them.

Because all ages have unrestricted access,  language should be in keeping with the varying age groups who visit. If a word is unacceptable for children or young teens it should not be used in the shoutbox. Please avoid coarse language.

There is a current limit of 300 characters for a shout and long conversations or complicated conversations are not appropriate with such limitations. That is why we have a separate LJ and FB page for such conversations. (more on that later). You are encouraged to take such longer or more in-depth conversations there. You might announce the topic of the conversation and provide a link in the shoutbox to the actual conversation. This will allow those not interested to forgo having to wade through 300 word snippets of interrupted conversation or to have disagreements turn ugly or be misunderstood.

Those who post anything intended to cause trouble in the shoutbox will receive a written warning from the site Mods after a report from other members and evaluation indicates the need. This could lead to restricted site privileges that could include a limited ban from using the shoutbox. Any action deemed as harassment such as a flurry of PM’s that accompany the troublesome shoutbox post will be cause for further action as well.

The new TOS on this will be in place shortly but in a nutshell there will be stages to how any violations will be dealt with. Anyone determined to be in violation of the new policies on Cyberbullying, Harassment, Flaming and/or Trolling (all to be defined later in this article) will be given the following (in order): A written warning to cease and desist. There will be no more than 3 written warnings in a calendar year permitted before a one year site ban is put on the member’s ID. After that year the member would be permitted back with full privileges. However, just one more warning upon return will result in a permanent ban.

LJ and FB (EF sponsored pages) conversations:

Politeness is always in order. That does not mean respectful disagreement is unacceptable. People have different opinions and views and that is fine and free speech is always permitted but the language used should always be respectful and, obviously, no name-calling is ever okay.

The subject of the conversation should be clear so that those entering into the discussions will know what they are getting into. Not everyone wishes to partake in a conversation on (for example) genres or technical writing skills whereas many others would be delighted. Make sure you title the thread properly.

No one should enter such discussions simply to stir up trouble. If you don’t wish to hear contrary opinions on a subject, do not join in the conversation!

This is how the LJ and FB pages differ from the shoutbox and why it is the proper place for those sorts of conversations. The shoutbox is there for every set of eyes to see and/or wade through to get to other shouts not related to the longer conversations. You either avoid the shoutbox altogether lest you encounter one of those discussions or you risk getting pulled in or upset. By keeping those conversations in the LJ or FB realm (and, as stated before links with description can be posted in the shoutbox to let interested parties know the conversations are taking place), only those who wish to participate can. It also makes it easier to follow the shoutbox flow without a lengthy discourse on a particular topic. Conversation not broken into 300 word chunks and with other conversations popping up in the middle will make it easier to follow for everyone.

Clearly this is not an attempt on our part to censor conversations or silence opinions but directing such conversations to the proper place. We do still insist on following basic rules of a civilized conversation that one would expect such as no flaming, harassment, bullying, trolling, and that sort of thing. Members can report violations and there will be an evaluation of the report by the mods.

DEFINITIONS of some of the terms used in this article:

Cyberbullying: Can take several forms some easier to spot than others. This includes, but is not limited to mean comments intended to inflict hurt, making fun of the victim, gossiping about another member, sending harassing PM’s or E-mails to another member.

A more difficult form to notice or police is the use of passive-aggressive behavior. Passive-Aggressive behavior on social media is explained in depth in several articles online including

Passive-aggression is a deliberate but masked way of expressing feelings of anger, it is carried out online through several actions that often fall over into cyberbullying. Without directly addressing passive-aggressive behavior the dynamic will be played out again and again and leads to disruptive situations and unsafe environments.

Passive-aggression is there but it is not. You see it and you don’t. Sometimes there is an innocent explanation but often there is not and the passive-aggressors themselves might not even know which is which. That is why a complaint that such behavior is taking place will need to be evaluated by more than one set of eyes.

Some examples that might warrant evaluation include “the non-compliment”. If you are not sure which kind of compliment you’ve gotten, pay attention to your responses. If you feel like saying, “Thank you” it’s a normal compliment. If you feel like crying or screaming from the room...not so much. “Terrific soup” is a compliment, “Terrific soup, I didn’t even taste all that cilantro” is a passive-aggressive non-compliment.

“Wistful wishing” is another example. Someone will passive-aggressively announce something they want and then immediately conclude, aloud, that it’s probably not going to happen. The objective is to get an idea out there then immediately disown it. To illustrate, “It would be so great if no one ever wrote another claim fic but I guess that would make some people unhappy,” would be a passive-aggressive statement.

“The disguised insult” is another. Usually it comes in the form of a “but” statement. Something along the lines of “I don’t want to sound mean, but…” or “I hope you don’t think I’m insensitive, but…” After that “but” comes something hurtful or insensitive or judgmental. This is as close to pure aggression as the passive-aggressor gets.

If you see a pattern, it is probably real. You can tell the aggressor to knock it off but it often does not work. If you see a pattern, report it and a determination can be made if such statements indicate invocation of policy towards the offender should take place.

Harassment: Is repeated and unrelenting negative threats, mean comments and other hurtful activity. It becomes cyberbullying based on the repetition. Specifically, harassment can mean sharing private communications online with others, targeting the victim relentlessly in group communications or simply sending hurtful private message to another.

Flaming: Flames usually occur in a public setting online such as a chat group, shoutbox or forum. The cyberbully will send hurtful, angry or shaming messages to the victim directly but within the group so others can see. In addition to the effect of the hurtful message itself, the victim has also lost some of their credibility and reputation within the group and may feel they cannot be part of the community anymore. The victim will often disappear from the group with no fanfare but emotionally distraught.

Trolling: To make a deliberate offensive or provocative online post with the aim of upsetting someone or eliciting an angry response from them. A troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community intending to provoke readers into an emotional response or otherwise disrupt normal on-topic discussion.

Often a troll will use emotionally charged words or expressions (“ick” or “yuck” in an opinion for example). They will use negative words designed to cause an emotional response in others.

Many trolls will take the time and energy to continue the trolling via PM’s or e-mails once they begin the exercise in the forum, shoutbox or other area of public communication.

How to spot a troll: A social media troll is someone who creates conflict on sites by posting messages that are particularly controversial or inflammatory with the sole intent of provoking an emotional (read: angry) response from other users. We all are capable of saying something that will result in hurt or anger. When informed that we have done so the normal response is to apologize (a REAL apology for the hurt/anger not a “if you were hurt…” statement of non-apology apology) and move on. With a troll there will not be an apology but a continuation that often attempts to shift the blame for the hurt/anger response on the person trolled. This can also lead to a group “taking of sides” situation. The more you respond to a troll the more motivation they have to continue stirring the pot.

Trolls do not toll to start an open-minded discourse about issues, they exist solely to antagonize and start fights.

Why do people troll? There are many reasons, but bear in mind they may feel depressed, attention-starved, angry, sad, jealous, narcissistic or some other emotion they may not be conscious of that influences their online behavior. The most recommended response by experts  to a troll trying to provoke you is to just ignore them. The old saying, “Don’t feed the troll,” is apt.

Sadly this does not always stop them. If you feel you are being trolled, report to the mods and it will be investigated and dealt with according to policy.

They troll for many reasons including but not limited to being a source of perverse entertainment for the troller, to be offensive and argumentative, to derive pleasure from annoying, hurting or angering others, to get attention, to feel powerful, to gain recognition, to upset the victim and even to present themselves as the victim.

Conflict vs. bullying: Conflict is a disagreement (civil) or argument in which both sides express their views. Bullying is negative behavior directed by someone seeking control over another person. Their goal is to hurt, harm or humiliate.

Cyberbullying can be relentless and increases the likelihood of anxiety and depression in the person being bullied (or those impacted as an observer).

Those who feel bullied can notably decrease involvement with the site or become withdrawn, losing interest in the community at large or the fandom in general. Not everyone who leaves a fandom or site is a victim of bullying but it is also not uncommon.

People guided by empathy usually realize they have hurt someone and will want to stop their negative behavior. On the other hand, people intending to cause harm and whose behavior goes beyond normal conflict will continue their behavior even when knowing it is hurting someone. At times revisiting a topic already proven to cause trouble in the past.

These types of behavior break down a community. It drives people away. It causes hurt and anger. It can eventually destroy a site completely.

When members try to retaliate or do anything that might be perceived by an outsider to have contributed to the problem you make it worse. Do not respond to a cyberbully except to calmly ask them to stop. If they refuse then take the next step and report the behavior to administration.

Again we will be adapting our TOS and policies to reflect our position on such behavior if and when it is reported or noticed by the mods. Warnings will be given and if that does not eliminate the problem site bans and restrictions will be enacted.

We are not trying to stifle anyone. We are not trying to censor anyone. We are not looking forward to a role as police-person. We do insist on having this site be one that is a positive place for people who share an interest in Spuffy and love of this fandom. We insist on respectful behavior and proper conflict resolution. We hope these coming clarifications and changes will help to preserve that environment, keep EF a place for writers to expand their skills and share their output and readers to enjoy the free gift of these stories as well as the community discussions that take place on site run locations such as the shoutbox, LJ and FB EF pages.

What to do if you have experienced or believe you have witnessed a violation?

Every registered member has a profile page. On that page next to the username are boxes one of which says, “[Report this]”.  Click this box and fill in your report of where the violation occurred and it will transmit to the administrators of the site. The mods will then investigate and take it from there. You might be contacted for further information if deemed necessary. Please be as specific as possible so that we can make a fair and timely judgment. If the infraction occurred in a PM or e-mail you should be willing to share that information with the mods. (a screenshot will work or an e-mail forward)

Thank you for reading and understanding and for helping us be the place you WANT to come and join in safely.

New TOS/FAQ please read

Hello writers, artists and readers here in our EF family. I’m here with important information about something that impacts us all and that is newly covered by additions to our TOS and mentioned in our FAQ.

Part of the job as administrators of this site is to update rules and guidelines as things change and evolve that impact the site. There is one issue that has been on edge of fandom for years but has grown enough that it needs official addressing. This news item will likely be long winded but I feel it is important that I try to have us all understand not just the what of these additions but the why’s as well so please bear with me. Also please take note of the new rule.

Eons ago man discovered fire and fire is good and helpful. Without it we likely wouldn’t have civilization as we know it. Fire can also destroy. So too creative artists have discovered fire and it is up to us as moderators of this site to make sure it is a blessing not a problem, that we don’t risk burning down the cave.

Elysian Fields exists as a community, a family where we create, share and archive creative output; art both written and graphic. Every one of you is valued and those of you who provide these works of art are priceless to all of us. But this unique artform borrows (literally) from others by its nature. Fanfic and fanart uses characters and images that are owned legally by others that is why we display disclaimers that point that out. We are fortunate in dealing with characters and images from the Buffy and Angel fandoms because we have the implied permission to use those characters and images, not always the case in all fandoms.

Joss Whedon has stated he is okay with fanfic and fan art that play with his legal property.  Joss is not the sole owner. Large corporations who have far less compassion such as Fox also other individuals like the Kuzui’s have proprietary rights as well. Fortunately they also have chosen to turn a blind eye to our creative pursuits. They do this largely because we gain nothing but enjoyment from our efforts. They own rights to “official” artistic expression like the TV show and films already existing and possibly revisited in the future. They own and profit from “official” novels and comics and graphic representations of these characters in many formats.

Many of fandom’s artists produce works as good if not better than those “official” creative forces but we do not profit from our efforts. Such is the nature of the beast. Unfair in many eyes and that may well be true but it is legally the way it works.

Early in fandom there was a big blow up over these issues. Here’s a link to a brief rundown of what happened. Many of us “old timers” remember it well.  When this happened fandom was just finding its feet and the situation was pretty much a one-off. Like with everything internet, that has changed.

Now there is something that is growing and as such needs addressing.

Artists from early times have had patrons. Important people whose creative contributions are financial like those of you who donate here to keep our site open. Such support allows the artists to thrive or at times just survive. Creating art takes time and energy and yet the human artist must still tend to practical needs. There is nothing wrong with helping an artist have that freedom, it is often vital and part of the creative process. Now thanks to the internet there are sites where you can support artists in music, writing, visual art and so on allowing them the freedom to create. This is a good thing and valuable and now easy to use. Ladies and gentlemen the caves now have fire!

Here is an article that explains better than I can here:  and here is a link to one such site: . This is becoming more common and fandom’s artists have taken note.

So how does fandom deal with this new asset? We are in an interesting position because the raw materials of our art; the characters, settings and images are not originally ours. There are people and corporate entities who literally own them. If we get paid in tangible ways other than reviews and praise we tread on their toes and risk incurring their notice and displeasure. They don’t mind our playing with their toys but it’s something different if we profit from it. Their permission to use their legal properties can be withdrawn without notice and we all would suffer from that.

I don’t mean to imply we’d be hauled off to jail or that the site is in any danger of closure BUT it is within their legal rights to order cease and desist at their pleasure and that would result in losing the treasures we enjoy here with stories and art housed on this site. It is our job to protect the treasure for all of us to continue to enjoy now and for years to come.

So how to enjoy and rightly benefit from this discovery of fire without burning down the cave?

We Mods have been discussing it among ourselves and have decided to add to our terms of service (TOS) and mention this new thing in our FAQ. Where does Elysian Fields stand regarding our very worthy artists promoting their patron sites in their profiles or in the Shout Box?

We want our artists rewarded in whatever manner they desire be it reviews or in a more practical way. They deserve it as their artistic talent is in no way lesser than many already profiting. We do not in any way discourage efforts by any of you to do so. At the same time we do not want to risk legal thin ice.

Feel free to link to patron sites in your profiles or mention them in the Shout Box. Best of luck to you in their success. BUT if you do link to such a site for your profit here on EF you must not mention that your artistic output is fan based. No using of the words fanfic or fanart, no promise of such as a reward or in payment for any funds received. Feel free to link to a patron page that indicates you write or do graphic art, for example, and state that you are soliciting financial assistance to free your time for producing those works. Those general statements are legally fine and historically common. It’s when fanfic or fanart is overtly mentioned that we get into dangerous territory and we cannot allow you to post links if you choose to word your patron page using any of those terms in describing your request for patronage or as a reward for same.

We have close to 800 artists in our EF family and all are worthy of your support and they are genuine artists. There are 4 Administrators to the site. We cannot police them all nor do we wish to. We have no desire to start a witch hunt or rain on anyone’s parade...indeed we support you and your efforts. But we would be derelict in our duties to not make rules for linking to these sites.

So if you have a patron site feel free to link in your profile or mention it in the Shout Box. But before you link...think. If you offer anything or refer to your artistic output in a way to indicate it is fanfic or fanart you cannot post the link here. Remember there are legal owners to those properties and they aren’t always generous in sharing.

If you see a link that crosses the line or you think might cause a wildfire let us know. No one is going to be driven into the wilderness or  punished. We might, if need be, ask that the link be removed if it continues to be worded in a way that is legally challenging for us. The mods are not going to go looking for things that don’t fit our TOS but we will deal with those issues that are brought to our attention.

Good luck to all of our artists and lets have all the benefits of this wonderful fire without risk of burning down the cave.

Thank you,

Kathleen (and the other Mods.)

Here is the new TOS:

• You may link to a patron type site in your profile if you have one but the wording in the linked page must not specifically say the donation is to finance your writing of fanfic or creation of fanart specific to properties owned by Joss Whedon, The Kazui team, ME, Fox or any other entity who own the legal rights to the characters and images you use in your art. If your patron site violates this you will be asked to remove the link until it complies with our rules. This applies to official patron sites or any other request for financial compensation for your fan based artistic output.

Here is the new FAQ entry:

Can I link to my personal Patreon page or ask for compensation for the fanfic I write?
Links to Patreon/fundraising type sites are allowed, but only if the site does not include wording implying that patrons are expressly paying for fanfic/fanart. We're all writing/creating material based on copywritten characters, and we don't want any of our members, or the site itself, to get into legal trouble by attempting to make a profit off of that material. For more details, please see out terms of service.

Reunion Challenge

Hello everyone!

I want to say a huge congratulations to everyone who participated in the challenge. Everyone involved, from the artists and writers, to the readers and reviewers, have helped to make it a success. The challenge has seen 41 brand new stories written and shared with our wonderful community.

If you have yet to read any of the challenge fics, and you want to see them all in one place, you can FIND THEM HERE

For anyone yet to post their fic, there's still time. The challenge is still open, but the window for selecting the checkbox to add your fic to the challenge is closing soon. You will have until 11:59pm on Wednesday, November 15 (site time) to post your first chapter. The fic does not need to be complete to be part of the challenge, you just need to have the first chapter posted prior to the 16th of November for it to be included in the event list.

I'm in the process of contacting authors who signed up, but have yet to post, to alert them to the timeline extension.

Awards have been added to member accounts, so if you participated as an author, reviewer, or artist, you should see them on your profile now.

Thank you again to everyone who participated in the Reunion Challenge.

Happy reading!

Countdown to the Reunion Challenge!

Who's ready for October and the start of the Reunion Challenge? (hint: WE ARE! squee) In order to make sure everyone understands all that's going on, we'll try to cover everything here. If there's something you're not sure about, please let us know in the comments. There's a lot of information here, but please read the whole post in order to learn about all the amazing things happening this month...

How and when do I post my story?
Starting at midnight on October 1 (site time, which is Eastern US time-it's listed under the shoutbox), you'll see a new checkbox on the page where you add a new story:

As soon as you see that box, you're free to post. If you're adding a new story that is part of the challenge, check the box and you're good to go.

Your fic does not need to be complete prior to posting. In fact, it doesn't even need to be completed during October. So any authors stressing about the timeline, please take a breath because you have the whole month, during which you only need to BEGIN posting the story.

If you requested and received a banner, please make sure to credit the artist in your story's summary section. If you're not sure how to add a banner, please see this section in the FAQ.

How do I find the stories that are being added to the challenge?
Challenge stories will have some clinking champagne glasses next to the title (because what's a reunion without a celebratory toast?):

Also, don't forget that we have a site events browse page where you can view all the stories from previous site events, as well as the ones from this challenge.

Will you be featuring regular stories while the challenge is going on?
There won't be any mod-chosen featured stories in October. In the area where we usually have featured stories, we're going to begin the month by reuniting with stories written in past years. Starting on the 1st, each day will highlight one year (1st-2006, 2nd-2007, and so on...), and will contain a random assortment of stories published in that particular year. Starting on the 12th, that section will change to feature a random assortment of fics that are part of the Reunion Challenge.

I'm not an author or an artist, is there something I can do to participate?
Don't worry readers, we haven't forgotten about you. If you write at least 20 reviews (for 20 years of Buffy) in October that contain at least 7 words (for the 7 seasons), you'll meet the requirements of the reviewer challenge! You'll see a link to the review challenge leaderboard on the homepage under the Members of the Month where the all star reviewer list is usually located. Authors and artists who participated/are participating in the Reunion Challenge  are welcome to participate in the reviewer challenge as well!

Besides an amazing sense of pride, do we get anything for participating in these challenges?
Of course you do! We have some amazing awards that will be given out after the end of October. Our amazing angelic_amy created the following awards for participating authors: , artists: , and reviewers: .

That about covers it. Please let us know if there's any additional questions. Get some rest. We know there are late nights filled with good stories ahead.

Edit Shouts

If you're not signed up as an author or artist for the Reunion Challenge, that's something you need to quickly correct.

Speaking of correcting (note the amazing segue), we know it's frustrating when you accidentally leave a typo in the shoutbox and are unable to fix it. Because we feel you're your pain, we've made it so you now have the ability to edit your shouts when the need arises. In order to edit a shout, you'll need to head to the Shoutbox Archive (there's a link to the archive below the shoutbox itself on the main page). In shouts you've written, you'll now see a link that says [Edit Shout] (highlighted in red here for emphasis):

Click the link and you'll be able to edit the shout and resubmit it by clicking the edit button. When you click edit, and the shout is updated, you'll be taken back to the beginning of the shout archive.

The majority of this was coded while I was being fueled by caffeine and The Weather Channel, so let me know if you notice any glitches.

Update: Reunion Challenge

Hey everyone,

The first lot of requests for art have come in, and this short message is to point you all towards them! If you're an artist in the Elysian Fields community and you're thinking of signing up to create one of the banners (or you're curious about the upcoming fic and just want to take a look), then you can find the banner requests HERE.

Artists, make sure you read over the info if you’re thinking of claiming one of the art requests.

Susan, our resident tech guru extraordinaire, has the art request claim page set up to automatically switch to request claiming OPEN at midnight SITE TIME on the 1st of September. Early claims will not be accepted.

To claim a fic request, artists will need to email me with the following information:

     Artist penname/user ID:
Permission to share your email with the author(s) you sign up for:
Banner request: List your banner request(s) by fic title and author penname name, in order of preference
(up to top 5 or 6).
Number of banners you are willing to create: (max 3)

Each fic will ONLY be allocated to one artist, and it will be in a first come, first serve basis. Artists may sign up to create multiple banners, however we will cap the number to three banners to begin with, to encourage involvement from a lot of people. If we require a secondary sign up, that will happen later on.

Finally, to the participating authors. Even though the request claiming goes live on the 1st of September, you can still sign up to request art after that date, but we will be imposing a cut off (likely a week before posting starts on the 1st of October--this is to be confirmed), to ensure that artists have enough time to complete the requests.

That's about it. Any questions? Comment here.

Reunion Challenge - Banner Requests

Hi everyone!

So far we're off to a great start with the Reunion Challenge, judging by the number of sign ups. I'm excited to read what everyone has come up with.

We're at that point where (hopefully) authors have made some progress on their writing, and may possibly be looking for some art to accompany their words.

Authors, if you would like a banner, now is the time to start making requests. It's pretty simple, all you need to do is shoot me an email (address available at the bottom of this post) with a combination of the following information. The first three dot points are required, the rest are optional. So, if you are looking for something specific, give me as much information as you think the artist will need. Alternatively, if you are open to the artist experimenting, then just give me the required info.

Required information

  • Fic title:
  • Author penname:
  • Story blurb (or a short summary if you're not at that point):

Optional extra requests

  • Season/episode (so the artist knows the kinds of images to look for):
  • Feature characters:
  • Colour theme:
  • Mood/Style (dramatic, simple, lighthearted, happy, etc):
  • Other (Special requests for objects, specific images, etc):

A master list of the banner requests will be created for artists to look through and I'll announce when that goes live.

And just a reminder, to keep everyone on track...

KEY DATES for the Challenge:

  • Writing sign ups: from the 10th of July... STILL OPEN!
  • Writing time: from email confirmation until the 30th of September (and beyond)
  • Author submissions of banner requests: from the 23rd of August... STILL OPEN!
  • Artist sign ups: from the 1st of September
  • Artists to provide banners to authors: by the 30th of September
  • Posting of fics to begin: from the 1st of October

That's about it. Authors, you can email me your requests at

Happy writing!

Reunion Challenge

Edit 24th August: We're at 41 authors. It's not too late to sign up if you've been thinking about it. The more the merrier!

Edit 12th August: We're at 37 authors. o/  Still not too late to sign up. Come on... you know you wanna... wink

Edit 4th August: We've got 30 authors signed up for the challenge! And it's not too late to sign up if you're still considering it.

Hi everyone!

A little over a month ago, the mods were discussing a new site challenge. We'd been leaning towards a Round Robin event, but knowing that some of the members had put together their own round robin (which has made a great start so far, check it out), we decided to put that idea on the back-burner. It will possibly be revisited down the track.

So we kept thinking, and the idea for this challenge was born. It has taken inspiration from the 20th anniversary of BtVS (and the accompanying photo shoot), and a fandom meetup organised via a facebook group.

Both events have a strong thematic connection, which is why the challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a fic with the theme Reunion.

What will the Reunion Challenge involve? All the relevant details are below.

This new item serves as your sign up post. By signing up to the challenge, you are agreeing to comply with the rules and regulations, and to write a fic with the following specifics:

  • Length: Minimum of 1,500 word count, maximum is completely up to you.
  • Characters: Buffy, Spike, any other BtVS or AtS characters you see fit.
  • Content Specifications: The fic MUST address the theme of Reunions. How you decide to incorporate this theme into a fic is entirely up to you, the writer.
  • Timeline: The fic can be set during the BtVS timeline or post series. It could be shortly after the demise of Sunnydale, or twenty years into the future. If you can manage to incorporate the theme into a pre-series fic, awesome, we'd love to read it.
  • Dates: No posting of the fic onto the archive (or anywhere else) until the 1st of October. As soon as you receive a confirmation email from me regarding your sign up, consider the writing process time open.
  • The challenge is for new fic only, not to be attached to an existing story.
  • The fic DOES NOT need to be complete prior to posting, nor does it need to finished during the month of October. We’d just like them to be started during that time.
  • Authors are not limited to writing one story. So if you have more than one idea...great!
  • When you post your fic, please ensure you credit the artist who made the banner in your fic summary.

Now, thanks to the success of the Artistic Anniversary Challenge, the mods also would like the talented artists of our community to be able to take part in this challenge. And you will be able to!

Prior to the posting of fic on the 1st of October, we will be opening up a request list for banners. Participating authors will email me a completed form, with their request for a banner to accompany their fic. The request may include things such as: Fic Title, Author Penname, the season the fic is set in, specific character image requests, colour theme…etc.

This information will be added to a master list. Artists may browse the page, and choose to sign up to fulfil a particular request. Each fic will ONLY be allocated to one artist, and it will be in a first come, first serve basis. Artists may sign up to create multiple banners, however we will cap the number to three banners to begin with, to encourage involvement from a lot of people. Secondary sign ups will also occur at some point. More details regarding the sign up process for artists will come at a later date.

KEY DATES for the Challenge:

  • Writing sign ups: from the 10th of July
  • Writing time: from email confirmation until the 30th of September (and beyond)
  • Author submissions of banner requests: 23rd of August
  • Artist sign ups: 1st of September
  • Artists to provide banners to authors: by the 30th of September
  • Posting of fics to begin: from the 1st of October

Authors, if you decide to sign up, were are asking you to send me an email at with the following information:

   Author penname:
I intend to participate in the Reunion Challenge.

And that’s it for now. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Yours in Spuffy,
The Mods.

Review Milestone and Fun New Emoticons

Today Elysian Fields passed 200,000 reviews. This is a huge number, and it's all thanks to you, our members. Thank you for being so supportive of the authors who share their stories here! As you continue to shower our authors with love, reviews might just get a little more fun thanks to some completely amazing new emoticons created specifically for Elysian Fields by our very own EffulgentEllie. You might need to refresh your page to see them, and we know that you'll love them once you do. Thank you so much, EffulgentEllie for your hard work, and for sharing your talent with us!

Here's to all the wonderful members of Elysian Fields and to 200,000 more reviews!cheers

A Word from the Tech Desk

7/7 update: Email issues should now be resolved, and you should be receiving story update and digest emails normally.

7/6 update: The issue preventing people from responding to reviews should be cleared up, so you can't use site problems as an excuse anymore wink. There is a lingering issue with email notifications, and some people are getting multiple emails, while others aren't receiving them at all. I'll look into it today and will try to get it resolved as soon as possible.

First off, I want to say thank you to everyone for being patient while we deal with the glitches that showed up when we were unexpectedly moved to a new server. Overall, things are working as they should, but there are still a few things that need to be addressed, and I'm sure there are a few more that will pop up along the way. I just wanted to take a minute to go over some things that would be helpful while things get back to normal.

1. If you notice a problem, please let me know about it via a PM or an email to the site email or my address (on my profile). If you post about it in the shoutbox, there's a chance I may not see it, and even if I do see it, I don't have a record of it to easily pull up. Plus, there's usually only so much information that can be conveyed in a shout. If you're just looking to see if others are having an issue too, the shoutbox is fine, but don't assume that your shout will be seen by an admin, or that any result will come from it.

2. If you are contacting me due to a site issue, I need as much information as you can provide. I need to be able to see the issue for myself to be able to try and fix it. Let me know the exact page you were on, exactly what happened, the exact text of an error message or a screen shot. If there's a problem with an email from the site, send me the entire message. The more information, the better.

3. Everyone has been very understanding, but I do occasionally get rather snippy or panicky messages when something isn't right. Please be patient and remember that, while larger archives have full teams of coders and buckets of money for servers, the entire EF tech staff is little old me. That's right, one woman, who also has a job and a family, and who does this in her free time. Today is the first day since the migration that I've been able to sit down and really look at what's going on for more than a few minutes at a time.

I'll keep you all updated as progress is made. Thank you for your support blow_kiss

New Genres

Hi everyone,

Just a short note to let you know that new genres have been added. The list of fic genres had not been updated in some time (possibly forever). The new additions came from a request in the suggestion box (brought forth from discussion on the Shoutbox) because the connotations attached to some older fandom terms has changed. We also added a few because, well, we just needed them.

The addition of new genres does not mean that existing ones have been removed or changed. I repeat, no existing genres have been deleted or modified. They're all still there. We've just added new ones, to give writer's more options for labelling/sorting their fic. If the new genres are utilised, that will also make it easier for readers to search for more specific criteria.

The new genre options are as follows: Dark, Humor, Lighthearted, Erotica, Hurt/Comfort, Vignette.

Humor is an alternative to Fluffy/Comedy (because sometimes a fic is funny but not everything is all sunshine and light), Lighthearted is for those fic that aren't full of angst (but still has more substance than fairy floss), and Erotica is for all of those bow-chicka-wow-wow fic out there written by authors who may not like referring to their works as PWPs or PWOPs.

If you are a writer on the site and wish to add or change an existing fic of yours to the new genres, please do so. Older fic on the site will not be altered by the admin staff. That will be at author discretion.

That's about it. Enjoy!

A New Beginning... (Or Maybe not)

4/1/16 Edit: Well, I guess our switch to an all Rangel site didn't go over as planned... April Fools! Of course the jig is up and it was all a joke. We know we put all this up before April 1 in the USA, where the majority of our members live. However, don't forget that 2 of our mods are Australian, and since it was April 1 for them, we technically weren't cheating innocent.

Thanks to all our members for playing along. We got some themed submissions, which was awesome and unexpected, and we had many lurky members comment and shout about our "new theme". We hope to keep hearing from you! Don't keep quiet until next year when we make this place a Clem/Teeth the loan shark archive wink.

An enormous thank you goes to javajunkie247, who played along with our insane request, and created some amazing Rangel banners for the site. They are both beautiful, despite the subject matter, and the joke would not have been the same without them:

Also, I think we can all agree that the fake featured stories were fabulous (and kind of wish they were real so we could read them), and they were all the work of our wonderful Kathleen (pfeifferpack). I love that they all received reviews (and epub downloads?). Here's a listing to remember them in all their glory:

We know this may come as a surprise, but hear us out. The truth is that we love Spuffy, and always will. However, after some discussion, all the mods have come to the conclusion that Spuffy stories have run their course. We feel like there aren't many new ways to explore their relationship, and we are worried that this fact will cause excitement for the site to die down. We talked about a new direction for the site, and all agreed that we should begin to transition the site theme to the least explored, yet most dynamic ship in the BtVS universe: Angel and Riley! These two heroes share an explosive chemistry, and we're so excited to see all the directions that our talented authors can take their relationship.

We will continue to house our Spuffy stories as we fill up the archive with the new theme. To get your creative juices flowing, we have some beautiful new site banners, and some featured stories that highlight why we feel Angel and Riley are truly the pairing of the future. Thank you for your understanding, and for your patience as we begin this new chapter at Elysian Fields!

Shoutbox Odds and Ends

Just a quick note to keep you all informed without clogging up the shoutbox. Speaking of the shoutbox, a suggestion was added recently about it, and it prompted me to add a couple new features, and finally fix some glitches that had been around for a while.

First, the fixes:

  • Links wouldn't work properly if they were directly followed by punctuation (e.g. or if they had more than one instance of http:// within them (e.g. These should no longer be an issue.
  • Multiple presses of the shout button frequently resulted in duplicate shouts. Some new behind the scenes code should now remedy this.

Now, the new items:

  • If you're reading on the shout archive page, you can now shout directly from there instead of having to click back to the home page. You'll see the shout text input at the top of the page.
  • If you want to catch up on the conversation that has occurred since your last shout, on the shout archive page, you can click View shouts written since your last shout. That will bring your last shout to the top of the page, and all shouts that have been added since that time by other members will be below your shout in chronological order.

It's not much, but hopefully it will help the shoutbox run a little more smoothly.

Reader Recs 2016 on our LJ

The lovely Sunalso has started a thread on LJ where you can list and link to stories that captured your attention that were either written or updated in 2016.

This is NOT an award or "best of" type of listing just a recommendation from reader to reader.

It is suggested that you post your recommendations (as a comment to the original post) based on genre (examples would be All human, Dark fic, Fluffy fic, Hot fic and so on).

The link to the original post is here:

Also on the EF LJ site:

NMCIL has suggested we start a thread there with links to other sites that are still active.  Lots of old archives and writers websites are disappearing and the wayback machine doesn't always get us to those "lost" treasures.  This would be a way to find older stories that might be lost to the ages otherwise.  Looking for WORKING inks for this one and anyone who wishes to start that thread with a post who can word it better than I just did should feel free to put it on our LJ.  (or click on the pencil icon on the main page of EF) and post the thread.

You can comment on any of the existing threads too so check out the discussions.  You can comment without joining LJ but to post an original thread you'll need at least a free account (I'm 99.9% sure of that).  If you don't join your comment will be listed as anonymous and will need to have a mod "release" it for general view.

This time of year I usually feature holiday stories in the Featured Stories box.

Since we are currently featuring AO stories in honor of the hot days of summer in the southern hemisphere and I really don't want to cheat anyone of the chance to read some wonderful AO fic I found myself in a dilemma.  Fear not and hurrah, I have stumbled upon a solution!!!

As of midnight tonight site time one of the current features (the very worthy but really dark Saving Grace by DreamsofSpike) will be retired early.  This is NOT because it is not as worth your time and attention as the others but with the author no longer being active in our fandom I thought her less likely to feel slighted if I chose her story for this purpose.

In the available slot there will be DAILY features of holiday stories from the 16th through (and including) the 25th.

So  KEEP LOOKING AT THE FEATURES FOR THE DAILY RECOMMENDED HOLIDAY TALE!!!!  And don't forget to check out the four wonderful AO stories that will remain until the normal time to change the features on the 26th!

Ho ho hoping you all enjoy the picks!

Artistic Anniversary Challenge

Hello everyone!

First of all, congratulations to everyone who participated in the challenge. Everyone involved from the artists and writers to the readers and reviewers have certainly made it a success. Of the 78 banners created 46 of them were claimed and from that we have had 44 brand new stories shared for the members of our community. That's an amazing turnout and everyone who participated should be congratulated. If you have yet to read any of the challenge fics, and you want to see them all in one place, you can FIND THEM HERE. I tried to shortlist some favourites to recommend, but there are so many wonderful fics it's hard to narrow down just a few. And that's not a bad thing!

For anyone yet to post their fic, the challenge is still open, but the window for selecting the *Click here if your story is part of the Artistic Anniversary Challenge* checkbox is closing very soon. You will have until 11:59pm on Friday, November 11 (site time) to post your first chapter, which is a little under 48 hours to begin posting your challenge response. This does not mean the fic needs to be complete and this goes for existing WIP's in the challenge also.

Now, onto the unclaimed banners. After much discussion, the mods have come to the following decision. With approval from the artists involved (emails are being sent to everyone individually as we speak) any unclaimed banners will be added to the challenges page for the site. They will be displayed as they were for the anniversary challenge, with all of the specifics and also with the accompanying banners. Any artist who wishes to reclaim their banner(s) may do so. Artists who give permission will see their challenge and banner added to the challenge page once approval has been given.

Finally, participation awards will be added to member profiles after Friday when the new deadline (11:59pm on Friday, November 11) has passed.

Thank you again to everyone who participated and helped us celebrate the 10th anniversary of Elysian Fields.

I started a thread on the Elysian_archive LJ, not as an official EF Mod but as an individual person. It's intended as a safe place for our family to reach out lovingly in support to one another.  Here is the link:

I initially posted it on my own LJ but thought it better belonged on the EF archive LJ instead.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Artistic Anniversary Challenge

Hi everyone. It's nearly at that time for fic posting for the Artistic Anniversary Challenge. Yay! We know everyone's excited to get started (including us!), and we know you all have questions about how everything is going to go. We'll try to answer everything here, but if there's something else you're curious about, please let us know in the comments. There's a lot of information here, so grab a snack, get comfy, and get ready to learn about all the amazing things happening in October...

How and when do I post my story?
Starting at midnight on October 1 (site time, which is Eastern US time-it's listed under the shoutbox), you'll see a checkbox on the page where you add a new story:

As soon as you see that box, you're free to post. If your story is part of the challenge, check the box and you're good to go.

Your fic does not need to be complete prior to posting. In fact, it doesn't even need to be completed during October. So any authors stressing about the timeline, please take a breath because you have the whole month, during which you only need to BEGIN posting the story.

In terms of banner credit, the artists need to be credited for the wonderful works, so all authors need to include the following line in the Summary section when uploading your fic. Written for the Elysian Fields 'Artistic Anniversary Challenge'. Banner 00 by artistname.

Here's a fictional example of what it should look like:

Summary: The day began just like any other for Buffy. Just your average Tuesday. That is, until the phone rang. Written for the Elysian Fields 'Artistic Anniversary Challenge'. Banner 375 by angelic_amy.

You can link to the banner master list also if you wish: This might be a good idea so that your readers are aware of the challenge specifics. Alternatively, you could copy and paste the challenge specifics into the Story or Chapter Notes of your story.

Hopefully by this time all of your authors have made contact with your artists. If you've not been able to make contact with them, or forgot, please let Amy know and she'll put you in contact with each other.

To add the banner to your story, you can upload the banner to your account in the Your Images section of your account info page, or to an image sharing site (,, etc...) . Enter the image URL (which should end in .jpg, .gif or .png - nothing should be after the file type) into the line marked Banner URL:

How do I find the stories that are being added to the challenge?
Besides the note in the story summary, challenge stories will have a little artist's palette next to the title:

This will make it easy to spot challenge fics. Also, don't forget that we have a site events browse page where you can view all the stories from previous site events, as well as the ones from this challenge.

Will you be featuring regular stories while the challenge is going on?
There won't be any mod-chosen featured stories in October. To celebrate the 10 years of stories, we're doing a little something different. Since this is all because it's Elysian Fields' 10th bithday, from the 1st-10th we're highlighting stories from each year of EF's existence. Each day will focus on one year (1st-2006, 2nd-2007, and so on...), and will contain a random assortment of stories published in that particular year. Starting on the 11th, that section will change to feature a random assortment of fics that are part of the Artistic Anniversary challenge.

This challenge celebrates the amazing authors and artists at Elysian Fields, but what about the readers?
Don't worry readers, we haven't forgotten about your incredible contributions to EF. We want to celebrate you by having a challenge you can participate in as well. If you write at least 15 reviews in October that all contain at least 8 words (for any stories here on EF, not just the challenge ones), you'll meet the requirements of the reviewer challenge! You'll see a link to the review challenge leaderboard on the homepage under the Members of the Month where the all star reviewer list is usually located. Authors and artists who participated/are participating in the Artistic Anniversary challenge are welcome to participate in the reviewer challenge!

Besides an amazing sense of pride, do we get anything for participating in these challenges?
Of course you do! We have some amazing awards that will be given out after the end of October. Our wonderful Kathleen (pfeifferpack) created the following awards for participating authors: , artists: , and reviewers: .

What's going to happen to the banners that weren't selected for the challenge?
That's still being determined, and will be announced shortly after the challenge ends.

That about covers it. Please let us know if there's any additional questions. Hurray for Fictober! squee

Adding Images

With the Artistic Anniversary challenge starting in one month and 7 days (but who's counting?), we know that a number of authors may be using banners on Elysian Fields for the first time. It can be a confusing process if you're not sure which code to copy and paste into the banner section of the story form. To hopefully make the process simpler and less confusing, we are now offering the option of loading your banners and art work to Elysian Fields. In your Account Info page, you'll now see an option called Your Images. To add a new image, click the Upload New Images link. On the new page, you'll see that images must be a .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, or .png file. The image can't be larger than 920 px x 300 px, and the max file size is 1 MB. Click the browse button to choose an image file from your computer and click Upload. If the image doesn't match the requirements, you'll get an error message, but hopefully it will be within the guidelines, and your image will be renamed and uploaded. Once an image is added, you'll see it in your list, along with the direct link URL. That URL is the one you'll need to use to use the image as a banner.

The size limit is necessary to limit disk space usage. Also, to preserve space and bandwidth, we do not allow hotlinking, which means that the images will only be available for use on Elysian Fields.

You're still able to use images that are stored elsewhere if that works better for you. You just need to make sure you're using the direct link no matter where the image is hosted.

New warning labels

Writers note that there are two new warning selections for your stories available if needed.  They are for suicide and attempted suicide.

We will not be going through the thousands of existing stories and adding this warning because  none of us have the time to cull through.  If you have written a story where the warning would have been appropriate and you wish to edit your story to add the warning please feel free.  Otherwise please note that these warning labels are available for future stories from now forward.

If you are a reader please realize that the warnings were not available until now, August 19, 2016 and read at your own risk.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Banner claims - Round 2

Hi everyone. Just a short note to let you all know that all banners claims up until this point have been confirmed. Authors, you should've received an email, and I've updated THE LIST, so all of the pretties are linked to the writer's who've signed up for them.

Now, for anyone who is super eager, and wants to take a crack at a second banner, (oh how do I want to, because they're so pretty... but I'm not sure if I should), then the process is the exact same as for Round 1. Second banner claims open Friday the 12th of August, SITE TIME. Email me with your preferences, in order, and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Final reminder... Now that you have your confirmations, you may begin writing (YAY!), but please don't post anything until October the 1st. Thanks!

Happy writing!

Banner claim nearly open...

Hi everyone. It's nearly at that time for banner claiming - less than five hours and counting. Yay! o/

First of all, important dates to remember:
Banner creation: 17th of July - 6th of August
Banner claiming: 7th - 13th of August
Banner confirmations: 14th – 15th of August
Writing time (but no posting of fics): 16th August - 30th September
Posting of fics to begin: from the 1st of October (and of course authors can continue to write/post throughout the month and beyond)

Now that we've got that out of the way... if you are someone who has been ogling admiring the pretties over the last few weeks (and there was just another massive upload of another 18 banners/challenges, so make sure you check them out) then here's what you need to do.

Firstly, you need to follow the rules and regs of the challenge. I'm reposting them in case anyone has forgotten. By signing up for a banner, you are agreeing to comply with the rules and regs, and write a fic with the following specifics:

  • Length: Minimum length 1,500 words, maximum completely up to you!
  • Characters: Buffy, Spike, any other characters shown in the banner.
  • Content Specifications: Must abide by the Must and Can’t Haves specified by the artist. Obviously the Can Haves is voluntary! All fic MUST follow the guidelines set by the banner artist, unless changes are agreed upon by both parties.
  • Dates: no posting of the fic on the archive (or anywhere else) until the 1st of October.
  • Banner claims are for new fic only, not to be attached to an existing story.
  • The banner must accompany the fic when it is posted on the archive. Modification of the banner with fic title and author name should be discussed with artist once the first part/chapter is ready for publishing. Authors, the mods will put you in contact with the artist when we confirm your banner selection.

Another reminder, each banner will ONLY be allocated once, and it will be first come, first serve. So make sure you are ready to hit send on the email when sign ups commence (very shortly). Sign ups will be for your top three banner choices, in case your first or second is chosen. If you want to list more preferences than that, have at it. But understand you will only be allocated one banner to begin with. Secondary signups for unclaimed banners will happen later on (dates to be confirmed).

If you think you can follow these specifics, and would like to claim one of the gorgeous artworks just begging to accompany a fic, then here is the last piece of information you need. When you can grab your pretty.

Susan, our resident tech guru, has the banner claim page set up to automatically switch to banner claiming OPEN at midnight SITE TIME.

So make sure you have the site open. When the message at the top of the page switches you need to email me at with the following information:
     Author penname:
Email address: (so contact can be set up with the artist for text additions)
Banner request: List your banner choice(s) by title (number) and artist name, in order of preference.

And that's it...

E-mails will be sent to authors to confirm their choice of banner, and then your Elysian Fields ID will be linked with the banner on the master list, which is why providing your penname is essential. Early email claims will not be accepted.
So don't start writing until you receive your confirmation.

Any questions? Comment here.

And when the time comes... happy claiming!

Banner update: Artistic Anniversary Challenge

Hi everyone!

Well, the entries are coming in hard and fast, and at present we have a count of 57 banners uploaded. That blows my mind, and I am so impressed and excited by the level of interest the challenge has created. We still have another week (until the 6th of August) for banner submissions, if anyone is still wanting to contribute. Thanks again to everyone who has contributed so far.

Side note, from an admin perspective, please ensure you send me all of the relevant information for your banner submissions. The most important thing (apart from the art itself) is your member ID/penname. Banners are not being loaded anonymously, and if I don't have that information I can't put your gorgeous work up!

Now, with the massive amount of entries so far, there is bound to be some errors with the uploading. A couple of artists have contacted me already because their specifications were a little screwy--something with the copy/pasting process not translating correctly. So, if you made a banner, and you notice something isn't right, please email me so I can correct it! **EDIT: And please ensure you add the banner number assigned to make it easier for me to search through to make changes. Thanks!

Banner claiming is currently not open. But it will be, soon. So author's, start brainstorming. I'll post the requirements for the banner claiming process within the next couple of days.

Featured Stories

Ordinarily I don't feature Adult Only stories not because they aren't worthy (believe me there are lots of fabulous stories with that rating!).  I try to make the features accessible to the widest audience including those in the age groups that cannot read AO stories.

However I really want to give nods to some of the best of them out of fairness.  So I figured what better time than the hot days of summer than to feature AO stories?  It's summer in the northern hemisphere so the features this time will all be AO stories.  We'll do it again when it's summer in the southern hemisphere.

UPDATE: Artistic Anniversary Challenge

Hi everyone!

First of all, I just have to have to say I am very impressed with the banner entries we’ve had so far for the ‘Artistic Anniversary Challenge’. You guys are awesome!

For your convenience, the uber talented Susan has created a page for the archive, where I’ve been uploading all of the fabulous art for everyone to view and drool over. We have some talented members at Elysian Fields!

Each banner has the accompanying challenge criteria, as provided by the artists. So make sure you read over the info if you’re thinking of claiming one of the pieces. Just a friendly reminder, banner claiming is currently not open. So don’t go emailing me with a preference just yet! We’re allowing another two weeks for banner making time so that artists have ample time to submit their pieces.

To all you wonderful artists, keep them coming!

And to the authors in our community, I hope you've got your thinking caps on!

Artistic Anniversary Challenge

Hello everyone!

The tenth anniversary of Elysian Fields is fast approaching--where has the time gone? The mods have decided a challenge is in order to celebrate this fact, and I come to you today with that information to encourage fresh blood and life (of the living and undead variety) to our wonderful community. Also, the challenge will involve both artists and writers.

So here’s the sitch. Authors have banners created for their fics all time. In most cases the art is made after the fic. Well, we’re switching it around. This will be an art before the fic challenge. It’s not a new idea, but it’s one that works, and I speak from experience having run such a challenge for a Livejournal community many years ago.

What will the Artistic Anniversary Challenge entail? Information is as follows.

We’re asking you to create a banner with the following specifics.
Dimensions: Width 900px x Height 250px (maximum)
Text: In a small (approx 8 – 10 pt) clear font along one of the edges, Designed for the Elysian Fields ‘Artistic Anniversary’ Challenge. The fic title will of course be left up to the author but suggestions can be posted with the banner (just not on it) if you have something you think fits with the art.
Design: Completely up to you! The banner can be theme or episode specific, whichever works best for you.
Fic Specifications: In a similar style to what you’d find under the challenges section of many eFiction archives. Must Haves, Can Haves, Can’t Haves list. No more than three specifics per category. An example of how it should be laid out can be found below in the rules section.
If you are an artist within our archive community and would be interested in participating, PLEASE reply to this post so we can gauge the interest in the challenge, and so we can all look forward to your wonderful creations. Once complete your banner and specifications are to be emailed to me at the following address, so that they can be added to the Artistic Anniversary Challenge page for the archive:

Once the art has been created, there will be a sign up, where banners will go up for grabs. Each banner will ONLY be allocated once, and it will be first come, first serve. So make sure you pay close attention to signup dates. Sign ups will be for your top three banner choices, in case you first or second is chosen.
We’re asking you to write a fic with the following specifics:
Fic Length: Minimum length 1,500 words, maximum completely up to you!
Characters: Buffy, Spike, any other characters shown in the banner.
Content Specifications: Must abide by the Must and Can’t Haves specified by the artist. Obviously the Can Haves is voluntary.
The banner must accompany the fic when it is posted on the archive. Modification of the banner with fic title and author name should be discussed with the artist once the first part/chapter is ready for publishing. Authors, the mods will put you in contact with the artist when we confirm your banner selection.
Banner claims are for new fic only, not to be attached to an existing story.

1) All entires MUST include BOTH Buffy and Spike.
2) All banner entries MUST comply with size restrictions.
3) All fic entries MUST meet minimum word count.
4) All art entrants MUST accompany the following form with their artwork:

Season/Episode: (if specific)
Must Have:
Can Have:
Can’t Have:

5) All banners and specifics MUST be emailed to the address provided.
6) There is no limit to the amount of banners an artist can make, nor fics an author can write!

Banner creation: 17th of July - 6th of August
Banner claiming: 7th - 13th of August
Banner confirmations: 14th – 15th of August
Writing time (but no posting of fics): 16th August - 30th September
Posting of fics to begin (and of course authors can continue to write/post throughout the month): from the 1st of October

That’s about it. If any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Yours in Spuffy,
The Mods.

We like to think of Elysian Fields as a community, and part of being a community is celebrating together. We already celebrate great stories and reviews, but now we can help each other celebrate birthdays as well! Based on a suggestion by RESPICE FINEM, you now have the ability to choose to share your special day with others at EF. If you head over to your preferences, in the site settings section, there's now a space for you to enter your birthdate. If you enter the date there (yyyy-mm-dd format), on your birthday you'll get a special note in the site info section of the main page, which will look like this:

Your birthday will be shared based on site time (currently GMT-4), not your local time because it's stubborn like that. Remember, this is completely optional. If you'd prefer not to share your birthday, just leave the space in your preferences blank.
