The Mark of a Mate photo Done_zpsyt1exsxe.jpg

A world where the first sentence your soulmate says to you is tattoo somewhere on your body (written in the mates hand writing). For William Pratt it was 'Who are you?' tattoo on his chest. William can't phantom why he’ll be so rude as to not properly introduce himself. When he confronts Cecily Addams, believing she his mate, he is crushed when she relives her mark.  He runs into the night and gets turn by Drusilla. Not wanting to turn his mate into a vampire in the aftermath of his mother, William now Spike believes it's best not to meet his mate. 80 years later his mark hasn't faded, (signaling his mate has died) or turned blood red (signaling they been turned into a vampire). Spike starts to realize his mate might not be born yet.

Buffy Summers is born with the words 'Nice work, love.' tattoo in blood red across her wrist. This worries Joyce Summers, most theories (in the human world) on blood red marks or marks that turn blood red say that the mate has fallen out of the path to where they will meet each other. Buffy worries about it as well, even more so when she meets her first watcher Merrick, who seem worried that not only does she have a mark (it's odd for a slayer to have one) but also of its color. He dies before telling Buffy the meaning, also he never tells the council. After Merrick, Buffy doesn't tell Giles, hides her mark with makeup or cuffs.

Can have: (which are optional)

Angel having a mark, it being one sided with Buffy.

Buffy stills date/sleeps with Angel after meeting Spike, maybe she tries to deny it or thinks someone got it wrong. (This is were the one sided mark will be good for Bangel)

Giles soulmate being Jenny, and then showing the pain one goes through when your mate dies.

Joyce having a faded mark due to the fact that Hank had an affair.

Joyce and Giles later become marked as mates. (Mates who are marked after the first meeting have their names tattoo inset.)

Anya is the reason marks exist due to one of the first wishes she grants.

When Anya becomes human she and the unmark Xander receives a mark. (Since Anya created the marks, only those born after the wish have one.)

Willow has two marks, one for Oz and the other for Tara. (Whether she ends up with one or both is up to you.)

Cordelia’s mark one sided with Angel (maybe fix to be two sided later in LA)

Spike gets his soul for Buffy, due to the aftermath of Angelus. (So that Buffy can trust him.)

Vampire's claiming their mates.

Drusilla’s mark being a bible verse, (signaling the person will dedicate their life to God) this is why she was going to be a nun. (The mark being scared not faded due to that fact she now a demon.)

Summary: A response to a challenge by LexiAnnMalfoy:
Buffy lives in a world where almost everyone is born with a tattoo on their body, rumored to be the first words their soulmate will say to them. Buffy's is "Nice work, love," in blood red.
Spike's is "Who are you?" In black
When she meets Spike in School Hard, she realizes who her mate is - But she has no idea what to do about it.

[Note: rating has been increased to R because of some potentially overly graphic descriptions of violence + sensuality]
